Hi, I'd like to contribute, as my 10-17mm was the first lens I got for my K200D (now upgraded to K20D) after my kit lens! I love this lens, although it's currently hospitalized (being treated for catching a bug).

Good God, look at these prices!

If the prices of *used* equipment isn't getting to be higher than what they went for new, there is no inflation, period. What things are worth on the used market is what people are willing to pay for them. Minolta lenses are good? Try using one on a Pentax. Good luck trying Canon FD or Nikon F lenses on a Pentax. Sure there are other good glass out there (though very few with a quality coating that can match smc). They're worthless if they can't be used on the camera that you have.

Many Canon and Nikon DSLRs won't let users use legacy lense satisfactorily, either because they won't do focus confirmation, they won't meter properly, neither of them offer in-body shake reduction etc. etc. I guess some later Minolta lenses are good to go on Sony DSLRs. Of course good Minolta lenses (like the 35/2) are going for big money, too :-)

The fact is, Pentax makes is easy and enjoyable to use legacy MF lenses, and so people are into buying legacy lenses, which drives the prices to what they're really worth (which, again, is defined as what people are willing to pay for them).

Annihilation of Pentax lens line up - death of FA ltds

Guys, it's friggin' simple. If the FA limiteds are such a treasure, why haven't you guys gone out and bought them all already? You guys should have foregone the urge to upgrade your bodies every other year, and plunked down the cash so that you'd have these oh-so-precious, irreplaceable gems on your istDS. But you didn't. And now you're whining?

I don't know if this rumor is true, and if it's not, I think that's GREAT. I loved the FA31Lim I had, and I agree, it is one of the best lenses I've ever had the opportunity shooting with.

HOWEVER. The simple fact is this: *IF* they are truly discontiniuing the line, there's only one reason why they're doing it. And, contrary to what you whining people are suggesting, it's not because they're stupid, or they pay no respect to their users. The reason is *YOU*. It's because *YOU* haven't gone out and bought those lenses. The line is not making Pentax any money, and that is why they're discontinuing it.

How can you expect them to bleed money to continue a line, just so that you guys can *aspire to purchase them one day... maybe.... when you're rich....*????

I'm sad as anybody to see the FA limiteds go (if they really do). But there's really nobody to blame but yourselves.

I still don't understand why people will want to dump Pentax because of this development (if it's true).

(1) The FA limiteds are still out there. You can still buy all of them new. You can buy all of them used for pretty good prices. So, why not just go out there and buy them, and be happy

(2) There is absolutely NO way anybody could have reasonably expected Pentax to design *new* FA limiteds. That's absurd. They don't have a FF DSLR, and as far as we know, they don't plan to have one any time soon.

(3) *IF* Pentax releases a FF camera in the future, which I guess is something some of you are worried about (what will we do without FA limiteds when they release that unicorn camera I mean FF Pentax DSLR??): well, duh, *then* they'll bring out new FA limiteds with modern designs, made for digital sensors.

So really, I fail to see how this can be an issue to *current* Pentaxians. I guess one could argue that near-future Pentaxians might be missing out on legendary glass, but seriously, that's reason you'd abandon a brand?

I mean, I don't care what people do (hell, I'm currently not a Pentax DSLR shooter), and if you want to go to Nikon or Canon or Sony, you should just go right ahead, but I think if you're going to do that, it's not because Pentax is discontinuing the current FA limiteds. You wanted to do so anyway, and you were looking for an excuse. I just wish you wouldn't use something like this as the excuse, and in the process make it sound like Pentax is being extremely stupid, because they're not. It really makes perfect sense.

I know perfectly well what I'm talking about. I owned an FA 31 Lim and loved it to death. And as much as I loved it, I'm also a *rational* person, who can think, not only passionately about things, like you do about the FA limiteds, I also can think logically about things.

And your *call* to Pentax to produce more FA Liimiteds, is one of the most illogical, irrational things one could do, when, again, Pentax doesn't have, and as far as we know, has no plans of making, a full frame DSLR. It has everything to do with FF. If you learned a little more about cameras, you would have a clue.

Oh great way to debate; twist my words to make me sound like some uncompassionate jackass. What does being able to recommend it to other people have anything directly to do with what *YOU* choose to use? That's another absurdity from you.

I've been an Apple/Mac fan since the mid-90s. I loved their philosophy, and I loved their aesthetics. During the late 90s and early 2000s, there was a time that Apple looked like they were going to die at any moment. I continued to use their computers. *However,* I wouldn't have recommended Macs to anyone at that point in time, and indeed, if anybody asked me what they should buy, I would always tell them to buy an HP or whatever.

So, perhaps Pentax will become *unrecommendable* to you. Again, that doesn't explain why you would abandon the brand. You're talking all emotion, zero logic.

Says you.

The point is, once we all move over to a shorter register body, you can design smaller lenses that are just as good, if not actually better than their D/SLR counterparts. Look at the Leica M-mount lineup. Yes, there will be pains during the transition period, when some people will have little choice but to use their 16-50 + an adapter. But on the other side of the tunnel is going to be a system that is extremely compact AND well balanced.

What was the only downside of rangefinder film cameras? That's right, the "rangefinder". I.e., the fact that you couldn't compose and focus while actually seeing it with your own eyes. With mirrorless/EVF cameras, for the first time, you get to have best of both worlds; the high-quality and compact body & lens lineup of rangefinder cameras, and the ability to actually see & frame your shots without relying on klutzy mechanisms like rangefinders.

You know there's this thing called "photographs" that really help getting the point across in posts like this. Have you ever tried it? It's really good stuff.
