Item for Sale
VOIGTLÄNDER NOKTON 25MM F0.95

Asking Price
950

Item Location
Boston, MA

Item Description
Up for sale is a like-new Cosina/Voigtländer Nokton 25mm F0.95 for micro-4/3 mount.

I've tried several lenses in the F1.0 range for micro-4/3 (Angeneiux 25/0.95, Kern Macro-Switar 26/1.1). This Voigtländer is the best. Color, sharpness, bokeh, lack of distortion. It doesn't have as much character as the Macro-Switar, but it makes up for that with the size of the image circle (absolutely no vignetting) and the IQ when stopped down. Basically, it's a great performer wide-open, but in the case you want to stop down, you still will get great results––i.e., you can use this as an all-rounder. This is unlike some of the fast C-mount 25mm, which can be fun and interesting wide open, but become pretty useless when stopped down, due to distortion. That's why I've kept this lens till now.

With that said, the reason why I'm letting go of this is because of its size. I bought the GF1 so that I can have a pocketable high-quality camera. With this Nokton, it's no longer pocketable. I noticed I've been carrying around it less and less, which is defying the purpose. I'm going to go back to a small cine lens (probably Switar 25/1.4).

I've had it for a few months, but used it carefully and sparingly. It's like new. Optics, mechanics, cosmetics, all are 10/10. Comes in original box, accessories (lens hood and 67mm cap for lens hood) in pristine condition (one caveat, there are a few rub marks on the 67mm lens hood).
It is warrantied till Dec. 2011. If something pops up that is repairable through the warranty, I will personally take responsibility to contact Cosina in Japan so that you can get the repair. You'll just have to pay for postage and handling to and from Japan.

This is going for around $1150 new in Japan.

Yours for $950.

Got Film

Yup. Shoot color and B&W, everything from 645 medium format to 4x5 LF. Hasselblads, Rolleiflexes, Mamiyas, Pentaxes, Kievs, and a Norita :-)

I don't know if shooting film has, specifically, made me a better "digital" photographer.. I'd tend to think so, but basically, any kind of shooting should make you a better photographer in general. I know for a fact that I've become a better "film" photographer (very different approach to digital), but my main reason for shooting film is to shoot larger formats. If somebody gave me a full size digital sensor for all the formats I have (645, 6x6, 6x7, 6x9, and 4x5), I'd probably quit film. For better or for worse, that's not going to hapeen for a loooooooong time :D

Is k-5 a failure?

One doesn't "think" a product to be a failure. The product is either a failure or not. Some people may not like it for what it is; doesn't make it a failure if it's doing well on the market and getting great reviews––both of which the K-5 has accomplished.

So the bottom line is, it doesn't matter what I, or anybody else "think": the K-5 is NOT a failure, period.

The "ISOless" sensor

It took me a minute to understand the gist of the article, but this is actually quite cool. What would be cool is if Pentax (or whoever) goes one step further, maybe with the next generation Sony sensor, and (1) get rid of the ISO setting altogether, maybe with the entry-level cams, and (2) incorporate this characteristic into the in-camera JPEG processing.

I.e., instead of having a mode like TAv, where you get to choose your aperture and shutter speed while the ISO changes, you can have a mode where you choose your aperture and shutter speed and the cam will always take the shot at the optimal/base ISO, and process the RAW inside the camera accordingly so you get properly exposed JPEGs (obviously, this will only work well when the setting is "under"exposing at that setting).

I've always thought of TAv mode being cool, because ISO really doesn't factor into what I'm aiming for in an image (unless you happen to be going for the faux-grainy film look), while shutter speed and aperture are a big part of it, but I've been too hesitant to use it, becuase I'm afraid that it'd shoot in high ISO giving me bad pictures.

Absolutely disagree about best score. Hans Zimmer's score wasn't bad, for sure, but Trent Reznor's Social Network score was/is phenomenal. Obviously, it's no use arguing music because we'll never come to an agreement, but it's one soundtrack I'll be listening to for years. Can't say the same about the Inception soundtrack (I don't even own it :-P )

Also, Sarlette Johansson.

The presence of film per se doesn't affect digital shooters one bit. I suspect that the only, or, one of the major reasons, anybody would say something like "film needs to die" is the presence of certain types of film supremacists who aren't shy to insult digital shooters and digital cameras.

I shoot both, though recently I've been shooting film more and more. Rather than going berserk, you might try explaining, and perhaps even showing such people why film still can be considered viable, if not necessarily superior to digital.

I do it all the time. And I never fail to impress those who would listen. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that I will have a 5D Mk2 in one hand and a Hasselblad SWC/M in the other when I do the explanation (LOL). It also helps that I have a portfolio that clearly shows my point. But the most important point is that you show respect for both media, for all kinds of shooters. Yes, even if they're the ones being the bigots.

The Appeal of EVIL Cameras

Seriously? Have you read my post?? I'm an enthusiast. I absolutely crave for the benefits of non-retrofucs wideangle lenses and fast lenses. I would LOVE a Noctilux-like F1.0 lens for a full frame EVIL camera. My favorite camera is a Hasselblad SWC/M. I would LOVE to have a <21mm Biogon lens for a full frame EVIL camera (get working on it, SONY!). Neither of those are practical, or even possible in the case of the Biogon, on an SLR system. This is exactly my point. Having the minimum possible flange focal distance is *always* potentially benefitial for precisely the *enthusiast*, not entry-level users.
