Cool, thanks everyone. This time through, I'm experimenting with a couple metallic and some matte. Can't wait to see how they look.

What to print on

Howdy all,

I have about 30 pictures I'm trying to have printed (a set of 8 black and white portraits from Afghanistan, some HDR scenery, and a couple more black and white of people and some HDR of animals), and all is good except I'm not sure what types of paper to print on.

My choices are:
Glossy
Matte
Lustre
Metallic

I've tried to read about each online, but all I get is the generic "this is professional grade... beautiful for printing everything you can even hope to capture... etc..." so I'm trying to decide what to pick.

Any suggestions (attaching a couple pictures as examples of what I'm trying to print)?

Thanks ya'll,
Oren

Nature Mongolian Horse Running HDR

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Glad you liked it.

As to some of the questions:
This was a single image taken. I then used Adobe lightroom to create three additional exposures, +1,+2,-1. I then used Photomatix to combine the four exposures.

I didn't play with much of the editing (the saturation, etc), wanted to get some opinions before I screwed with it too much. (I lied, this was actually my second attempt at this picture, my first ended with the HDR being super saturated and pronounced and just cartoon looking so I scrapped it and started again). And thanks for pointing out the dust spots, I spent so much time looking at the horse, I didn't even look up at the sky, I'll work on fixing those next.

As to the horse itself, yeah, he's a little skinny. Its a really hard life out in Mongolia, harsh winters, and constant movement when there's not too much snow. Actually got to meet the "cowboy" whose herd this horse belonged to as he was getting them moving that morning.

The comments are much appreciated,

Oren

backpacking holster bag

Howdy ya'll, happy new to everyone.

I need some help on picking up a new bag. I love to go out backpacking and taking my k200d with me. I need a small holster bag (holds my camera, that's it, I keep my extra lenses (if I bring them) in my backpack.

I need it to have the loops on the back I can weave the waist strap of my backpack through. Any suggestions? I'm pretty aggressive on where I go and what I do with my camera, and it hasn't let me down yet, but I'd like the bag to be padded (I borrowed my roommates, but after a drop from waist height, the lens hood is no longer of this world). Doesn't need to be waterproof (a plastic bag wrapped around the thing works in a pinch) but I won't turn it down if its an option.

Any suggestions from fellow outdoorsman?

Thanks,
Oren

What copystand?

Hello all,

A bit ago, I posted about needing a stand for a camera in my lab to take pictures of plates and colonies and whatnot of Tb growing. Ratmagiclady was kind enough to point out using a copy stand would be better then using a tripod setup, and after researching it, I really think she's right. I've been looking quite a bit at B&H's site, and didn't really there were so many options of stands and lights and etc...

So, what do ya'll recommend? I need a stand that will support my k200d (and the lab's nikon if they finally get it), and my lester dine 105mm lens. I think having the lights would be good. Which one do you recommend? If not from B&H, then from where?

Thanks ya'll,
Oren

You bring back the memories. I've been backpacking there, took one look at the picture, and knew it was what I consider my favorite place to disappear into the wild. That's a better picture then I ever got of it.

You guys are awesome, thanks. I'll be showing this stuff to my lab manager later this week (and he says we may actually be able to get our hands on a copy stand or two--too bad once they're in the hood, they don't get to come back out again).

How do I update it? after almost two years, I'd like to change it, just a little bit, but while I can change all my other info, there's no edit button for signature. Could someone please help me with that?

Thanks,
Oren

What to get for a laboratory?

Howdy all,

Quick question for ya. My lab is going to pick up a camera (I don't get any say in the brand and whatnot they're going to buy), but I do get a say in the tripod, head, and any other stuff. Right now, we use my Pentax K200D with either the 35mm ltd macro lens or 100mm dental macro lens I have to take pictures of individual bacterial colonies or entire petri dishes and it works great. The limitation is of course on holding the damn thing steady.

So, I've been put in charge of getting a good tripod, a good tripod head, and a good set of macro-rails. While the budget on this isn't exactly slim pickin's, I am reminded that it is a university lab, so I have to be able to justify the expense (to someone that isn't photo savvy). What do ya'll suggest? We'd love to make the purchase within the next week or two, most likely from B&H, Adorama, or Amazon.

Thanks all,
Oren

K200d flash issue

Howdy all,

Does anyone know what's going on and how to fix it. On my k200d, I set the flash to only go off wireless control (so I get to choose when it goes off). But every time I turn the camera off, it automatically switches that setting back to auto and constantly pops up the flash until I switch the setting back.

It never used to do that. What's going on and how can I fix it?

Thanks,
Oren

search on market place

I was thinking, sometimes when I check out the market place, I just like to glance, who knows what I'll find that will suddenly catch my attention as to me wanting it.

Other times however, I'm looking for something very specific, a certain lens, a type of tripod, etc... It would be nice if there was a dedicated search in the marketplace for specific things. I think this would help sellers move their stuff because it could help buyers find something they're looking for without being overwhelmed with the sheer amount of stuff for sale.

Don't get me wrong, I love our marketplace, I've gotten two of my favorite lenses from it. But now I'm looking for some more specific things, and do find myself saying, "screw it, I'll just look later" because there's too many options.

Maybe I'm missing something already here, and if so, please let me know how to access a dedicated search, if not, maybe we could use one.

Thanks,
Oren

Need help on making a decision

Hey all,

I love my Pentax DSLR, but as a result of switching to the SLR camera, I don't know as much about P&S's as I used to.

My girlfriend is looking to pick up a new one for less then $150. I used a Nikon Coolpix for 4 years in some of the most god forsaken conditions and it was always trusty, but I don't know anything about the new ones. I used the Olympus water/shockproof ones on many of my third world travels for work and it too always worked well for me. I'll be honest, the only experience I've had with a pentax p&s wasn't a good one (the fact that the camera was used may have contributed to that however and I definitely don't hold it against Pentax as a brand).

So please help, I don't know if I should suggest Pentax, Nikon, etc...So I don't know what to recommend to her (she's waiting for me to make her purchase).

She needs a camera that can survive DUST (lots--she's around horses and the farm a ton), takes decent pictures in not the best lighting conditions, and also be a really reliable all around camera to use.

The help is much appreciated,

Oren

Once again, the pictures are just insanely good. Question for you, what tripod do you use and what mount? Mind posting a picture of that?

Much appreciated,

Hey all,

Its been a little while since I've last posted, traveling and moving and starting school again will do that to you. I've recently purchased Lightroom 2.5 and photoshop 4. I am massivly overwhelmed (I haven't even opened photoshop yet, I'm still finding lightroom daughnting).

Does anyone have any advice on good, thorough tutorials for learning lightroom?

I'd like to use it as my primary photo organizer, when I add new photos they'll automatically get added to my libraries, etc... plus use it for editing until I get up and running with photoshop. But I need guidance.

Please help!

Thanks,
Oren

Thanks for all the advice guys. I tried the slow-sync flash in Jaffa last night and it was perfect (not my shot, just the desired effect). I still need a bit more practice ironing out the settings, but short of that, it did exactly what I wanted it to do.

As to that night's sunset with the lady, it wasn't long before the camera was shelved on the old concrete barrier we were leaning on and the sunset was enjoyed for what it was, just a nice moment together.

Thanks again all, this site, the forum, and your advice make me glad I'm a Pentax guy,

Hey all,

I'm in Israel with the family and having an incredible trip. We are renting an apartment just up the street from the beach and its beautiful. Last night, my brother, myself, and our girlfriends walked down to the beach for sunset over the Mediterranean Sea. It was my girlfriends last night here so we wanted to take some great couple pictures of us with the sunset in the background.

Problem!--In each picture, one of two things would happen, either we would be very clear and the sunset would be washed out from over exposure or we would be too dark and the sunset would be perfect. I've already lost my chance to retake that picture again for myself, but I can still take some good ones of my brother and his lady.

How do I take this picture properly???
--what ISO setting??
--how do I get both to come into the picture correctly?

Thanks guys, your advice has always been invaluable,

Oren

THanks,
