My daughter's bonded pair of cats on their perch that sits next to her office chair while she works from home. No, there's no ginger cat named Ron though there should be!

I looked at getting something full-frame to go with the K1 II but in the end decided to stick with the 55-300. It’s worked out very well in my opinion. |

Wow. Thanks again to everyone who responded. I really appreciate the thought and time you put into your replies. Lots of good input to consider and it looks like I have some more reading to do.
I looked around and as best as I can remember from last night the prices for the Sigma 50-500 for Pentax were in the $1300-1400 range. Thanks for the tip.
No, I kind of like working with old glass though I don't get it out nearly often as I should. I have a Super-Takumar 135mm F3.5 that produces some beautiful shots. I just find that I use the zoom a lot in framing a shot that I can't necessarily physically walk up to.
This is intriguing, at least the 180 is. But again... the zoom. I'll keep them in mind for next year's presents (birthday, anniversary)!
I'm really glad to see an evaluation from someone who has both lenses.
That's helpful. I've queued up the articles for reading but I haven't gotten all the way through them yet. Thanks for the links.
Thanks for this offer. I may take you up on that!
Thanks for this. The point about the monopod/tripod is good to know though I would think that it might be true for the 70-200 as well. Both appear to be built like tanks in terms of size and weight.

If you look at my signature, you'll see I'm pretty well supplied in the "wide" range, DA 35mm F2.8 Macro Limited, DA 40mm F2.8 Limited, DA*55mm F1.4 SDM, DA*16-50mm F2.8ED AL [IF] SDM, DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6AL II, Pentax-M 50mm F1.7, Super-Takumar 50mm F1.4.
I don't know that a 24-35mm prime would add that much. As it is, I tend to carry the 35mm, 40mm and the 55-300 PLM when I'm trying to cut down on weight.
And the 55-300 PLM works well except for the vignetting on the K1 II which can be quite severe depending on the subject. Since I tend to shoot longer, I'm more interested in a long zoom that works on a full-frame camera.

I've got a variety of lenses but the one I've found is my go to lens and always on my camera is the HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE. Worked beautifully on the K3 and okay on the K1 II as long as the subject matter lends itself to cropping to avoid the vignetting that occurs. I tend to shoot long and as wide open as I can given light conditions. I'm a big fan of composing around the bokeh in the photo and the 55-300 PLM does a great job on that.
I'd rather not spend a huge amount of money but I don't buy lenses that often so I'll cough up the money if it seems worth it.
I've looked at the HD PENTAX-D FA* 70-200mm F2.8 ED DC AW and the HD PENTAX-D FA 150-450mm F4.5-5.6 ED DC AW specs in the forum data base. If I had to choose today, I'm leaning towards the 70-200mm but knowing how much I shoot long, I'm concerned about giving up that 100mm. And that nudges me towards the 150-450mm choice.
Is there anyone who has used both of those and can compare them?
Any worthy lenses from non-Pentax sources that I should consider?

I had the older 55-300 non-PLM and moved up to the PLM version when it became available. Here's a few of my favorites taken with both versions of the 55-300 and either the K3 or the K1 II.
Pentax K-3 - HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE
Pentax K-3 - SMC Pentax DA 55-300mm F4-5.8ED
Pentax K-3 - SMC Pentax DA 55-300mm F4-5.8ED
Pentax K-3 - HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE
Pentax K-1 II - HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE
Pentax K-1 II - HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE
Pentax K-3 - SMC Pentax DA 55-300mm F4-5.8ED
Pentax K-3 - SMC Pentax DA 55-300mm F4-5.8ED
There's more in my Flickr stream and albums. (I'm much better at posting consistently there than I am on the Pentax forum.)

I just want to add my two cents on the HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 PLM WR RE which I love. It is my goto lense and I shot a lot with it on my K-3 and my K1 II (with a little cropping). I highly recommend it, particularly if you don't need a full-frame lens. I do 98% of my shooting handheld and it's done the job. I tend to shoot long and try to create images where the bokeh is as much a contributor to the photo as the in-focus subject. The DA 55-300 PLM version is terrific. I have the older non-PLM 55-300 and the PLM version is a definite improvement.
That said I'm now looking around for a comparable lens that will work with my K1 II without the vignetting that I get with the 55-300.

Just to re-iterate what's been mentioned above. Just got my K-1 II today and was setting it up. I turned on the Clarity function and then spent an hour trying to figure out why I wasn't getting multiple shots when holding the shutter down despite having set it up for that. Finally went searching on Pentaxforum and found this post and voila, turned off the Clarity function and continuous shooting worked just fine.

After a bit more reading here and on a few other threads, I did it. Ordered the K-1 II from Adorama. It may be that the K-3 xxx successor would have fit my requirements as well but with no idea of when such an item might be available - 1-2-3 years from now - I decided to go ahead with the K-1 II.
Again, thanks for the discussion, UncleVanya. It helped a lot.

Thanks for this post, UncleVanya. I've got a K-3 which I truly enjoy but I want a second camera body. So the question in my mind is what's next? A K-1 II or a K-3 II or a K-3 xxx whenever it comes out. My lens selection doesn't cover the range that yours does but the responses to your post helped provide some perspective.

I feel guilty starting a new thread just to announce that my K-3 arrived via UPS about an hour ago so I thought I'd join in on OregonJim's news. I'm now anxiously waiting for the battery to charge.
Any idea how long the battery lasts if you're shooting still shots, no flash?

I like shooting with primes but, as always, there's a weight consideration. So I'm trying to sort out what an optimum mix of primes and zoom will be for me.
Dice and whoever else suggested it, I will go back and do a review of focal lengths on what I've shot. It's a good idea. That being said, I suspect that there are shots that I didn't even bother trying to capture because I knew I wouldn't get acceptable results. So reviewing past work can't be the only factor.
wtlwdwgn, thanks for your input. I'll check out your macro recommendations with interest.
kh1234567890 and ChristianRock, I agree that my kit is really lacking on the wider end which is why I'm here soliciting your input. You've both given me great suggestions and I'll look into them.
Thanks so much to everyone for your help.

ivanvernon, thanks for your recommendations. I'll be checking them out.
kh1234567890, I sense a preference for primes, especially limited primes. Sounds good to me! I will look at them and consider what might be a fit.
blackcloudbrew, thanks for pointing out that comparison. I'll check that out right now.

First off, thanks for prompt replies.
Yes, the kit lens is not my favorite and no, I don't believe it's a WR. Yes, it should be replaced. The DA*16-50 f2.8 does sound like a good option (nod to blackcloudbrew and deadjohn). Would there be a difference in quality between it and the Tamron lenses, the 27-50 f2.8 or the 10-24 mentioned above?
If you take a look at this set on Flickr (Edit: Flickriver version), you'll get a good sample of what I like to shoot. I should also mention that I like to shoot with natural light even in low light conditions.
The macro and wide angle recommendations are of interest as well. Dice, I must confess that I mentioned the DA* 50-135 before checking the price (cough). Since I've just ordered my K-3 from B&H, that's probably not on the immediate must-buy list.
theraven871, the DA 35mm F2.4 sounds intriguing and I will check into that.

I'm ready to put in my order for a K-3. Any recommendations on next lens (or two) to consider?
Current lenses:
Asahi Pentax Super-Takumar 50mm F1.4 **
Pentax DA*55mm F1.4 SDM
SMC Pentax-M 50mm F1.7
Fish-eye-Takumar 18mm F11 **
Super-Takumar 135mm F3.5 **
Pentax DA 55-300mm F4-5.8ED
Pentax DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6AL II
Rokinon 1:4.5 80-200mm
** Inherited from my dad
I plan on using my k200D as my primary body for my screw-mount lenses so I don't have to keep taking the adapter in and out when I'm out shooting.
I want to know what lens to consider next. There's a fellow Pentax aficionado on Flickr who does wonderful things with a variety of lenses. In particular I've noticed his work with a Pentax DA* 50-135mm F2.8 SDM which I think might be a good addition. Thoughts and recommendations, please.

Fixcinater,
The bee and flower photo and the tree image are amazing. The clarity and definition are just so striking. The color on the flowers just wowed me and the detail on the fruit is terrific.
Tough to come up with good superlatives without repeating myself.
Takumar does it again.
Thanks for sharing them.

No, it's not. The only post processing I did was to saturate some of the blue in the water so that it looked like there was water as opposed to all white with the faintest shade of blue in the ripples. I debated on whether or not do even that. It was a very grey day.
Here they are basically untouched ... just did some cropping and added a border on the one so you could see where it actually starts. It's stunning blown up on a monitor with a black background. |

Some time ago I inquired about how to go about using 3 old lenses of my father's - the Super-Takumar f3.5/135mm, a Super-Takumar 1:1.4 / 50 and a Fish-Eye-Takumar 1:11 / 18. I haven't finished reviewing and cropping all the pictures from the first outing with the lenses but I thought that I'd share some as I get them done. These were taken as part of a Connecticut Flicker Meetup group outing at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford, CT. The Flickr group has an agreement to shoot the cemetery (very large, old and picturesque) on 1 day in each season and then to put together a photo exhibit from the best shots. Here's my fall and winter shots, though not all with the old lenses.
Enjoy.

ok ... it's the 135mm f/3.5.
You're right, I took the other numbers off the hood. I went back and looked at the lens rim itself.

My father dug up his old Pentax lenses for me (and yes, I have thanked him properly though a couple great shots framed would be even better thanks, I suppose).
A Super-Takumar 1:1.4 / 50
A Fish-Eye-Takumar 1:11 / 18
A Super-Takumar 1:3.5 / 135 1:4 / 150 1:5.6 / 200
I have a K200D and I've ordered the adapter. So what should I try out first with these lenses?
Any special hints on using them with the DSLR?

Thanks for confirming that.
I have a Pentax 1:1.7 50mm from my Pentax ME super days that I use a lot now and really prefer over the kit lens when I can get away with it.
It will be interesting to see how the older lenses look in comparison.

This is what I found on the pentaxwebstore site PentaxWebstore Mount Adapter K(35m m Screwmount to Bayonet)
Mount Adapter K(35m m Screwmount to Bayonet)
Product Number: PTX 30120
* PENTAX K-Bayonet (external) Mount / PENTAX 42mm (universal) Screw-thread (internal) mount
* Permits use of PENTAX “S” screwmount lenses on PENTAX K-Bayonet camera bodies.

Is this the correct adapter for the Takumar lenses?
