I would also suggest getting a tripod as the cheapest solution for a starter.
For my K200D last time I had the same issue, and tripod is not always permitted... after buying a fast prime, I have to say that it really open up my night time shots.
Noise reduction can be done PP, and I have to admit when using the K-R compared to my K200D, I could take photos in near darkness with the ISO range was so much greater than mine... so dont be shy having the iso higher.

I remember seeing a comic showing
a rock tablet with hammer and chisel calling a piece of paper and pen not having craftsmanship...
the pen and paper is calling a typewriter of no penmanship
the typewriter calling a Computer of not having touch typing skill
the computer with a sad face with no comment at an Ipad...
this just reminds me of the "back in the old days" discussion I always used to hear from my older relatives... funny how now I am starting to talk like that... must be getting old :D

Another suggestions is you look at a local photography club... go out there, make new friends, and share the joy of taking photographs... I had separations before, and had the loneliness, depression and loss of direction... and as much as you would like to document the "pain" you are going through now, it is best to look for different things, get yourself out there, and meet new people... which can jump start your life again...
Good luck with it... :)
And yes, I dont have a lot of flowers in the house, but I do have 3 cats I always photograph if I am out of ideas... :D

i take it as a selling point of the X100 to have that "retro" look which has it's appeal to some part of the market....
Just think of the Ford Ka or the Mazda 121 "jelly bean" car... it may have been cheap and economical car, but man it is so ugly to me I would not even drive it if it was given to me... but I still see plenty of people driving it...

Will all be available light only, since it will be on early morning and with a cloudy day forcast it should give me some decent light contrast with the orange sparks, and blue plasma lights...
Might make this an excuse to get myself a proper new tripod :D

Hi Wombat,
the work shop will be shut on the day, and I will be with my friend who is the manager, so I guess he will be supervising or operating the equipments himself. So guess no need to rush on the shots, and able to carefully frame my shots... But yes, will need to be careful and watch where I go... and wear my steel cap boots too :)
Unfortunately I don't have a great zoom, so I will try the 17-70...
with (3) Im just worried the bright spark areas might get too overexpose... not too concern about the sparks, but more on the plasma cutter.

Hi all,
well, I got my first gig this weekend to help out a friend to take some shots for his workshop that does steel fabrications and custom works... never done industrial photo before, so any help and suggestions would be much appreciated.
he has given me a list of ideas what he is planning to do.... so I was someone might be able to provide some ideas and suggestions?
From his description, would have indoor workshop and outdoor location
his list consists of:
• Someone welding, sparks bouncing off other steel sheets for added effect maybe? Inside workshop, 1/50 sec exposure with the Sig 30mm
• Grinding inside of a pipe sparks running off the inside and making a full circle. I think something to do with exposure set to longer on camera? Makes moving lights one line sorta thing. Inside workshop, with the DA 35mm
• Moving band saw cutting steel beam, got metal shavings coming off it at hight speed? use the FA50
• Drilling steel and got metal shavings coming off it also at high speed. use the FA50
• Other objects which might be interesting to take pictures off might be the overhead crane that we’ve got, wire rope drum again moving parts. use the DA15
• Gouging machine. No idea what it is...
• Hi Def plasma machine, pretty cool blue hi intensity flame coming out of that capable of doing a clean cut up to 30mm of steel. Need suggestion without burning my eyes off :D
• Oxy cutting, flame cutting can be pretty cool. Need suggestion without burning my eyes off :D
• Other boring stuff like plenty of steel lying around the place, can rearrange to make whatever shape or size we need. Porbably just stick with the 15 for this one
• Trucks, utes, forklifts…
Any help for a newbie on his first job would be great...
thanks :)

Thanks to noelcmn for hosting the last contest. It was a great image that had many possible captions :)
I will also keep the "new" rules" brought in by MSL and Noelcmn. and any feedback is appreciated.
Here comes the next round. Please be sure to : Register Your Likes among the entries.
--- Rules ---
The object of this game is to come up with the most humorous, impactful, thoughtful, original caption for the displayed photo that will collect the highest number of 'likes.'
Submissions can be of any type - caption, limerick, de-movitational, poem, speech - whatever inspires you to write something for the photo.
Contestants may submit more than one entry but it must be in a separate post .
Important: whether you submit an entry or not, please 'like' any posts you feel deserve it!
Thread starter is the moderator and they must post their own original photo at the start of the thread.
In an effort to keep the pictures fresh, respondents have 1 week (see above) to submit their entries, after which time the number of 'likes' will be totaled to determine a winner. In case of a tie the thread starter must choose their favorite to break the tie. (It is somewhat ambiguous whether it is the total likes a person gets, or the single entry with the most likes that should be the winner, and we are leaving it up to each host to interpret as desired.)
The winner of that contest will be notified by PM by the current contest host and will become responsible for posting the next original work to be captioned.
In the event the winner does not feel they have content they can use for the contest or for any reason they can decline via PM to the host and the second most liked entrant will be designated to host the contest
This installment of the contest will close on May 9, 2012.
Please have fun with it :)

After playing with a little more with my K5, I love the fact that even though you may leave it in auto iso, you can set the min to max range you are comfortable with, AND also able to set the iso of the shot for either normal, low or high speed. I find this extremely useful for me to shoot in indoor lowlight with hands free and easily change it for either stationary or moving objects
