Tutorial updated for the new 2013 Flickr interface.

1. On your photo page, click the "Sharing" icon at the bottom right of your picture to open the drop-down. Click on the "Grab the HTML" link.

2. Choose a size in the drop-down, then click the "BBCode" button below. Copy the content in the code field.

3. On PentaxForums, just paste the BBCode in your message. You don't even need to click any button here!

It will create a picture with a link to the Flickr page. Easy :)

As an example, here's a "small 320" image from my Flickr account:

_IGP4839 by Philippe Gervaise, on Flickr

By the way, there are two BBCode tags: one for the image, one for the text link. You could well get rid of the text link if you just need the picture in your post, as the image itself has a link to the Flickr page.

Please note that this is the preferred way to embed Flickr images, since Flickr's rules require you to link back to the photo page rather than juste the image. See Flickr community guidelines.

This was shot near Notre-Dame around 10pm a week ago… I was at an event nearby when the news broke, I had my GR so I went there. The place was crowded but surprisingly silent. The atmosphere was both surreal and heart-wrenching.
Technically not a good picture, but that's all I managed to snap.

Now for something completely different and lighter, a sunset from the window a couple days ago.

Same here, when I bought the GR I started looking for one of those hotshoe viewfinders. Then I realized I didn't need one. Not having one immediately made me adopt another way of taking pictures, that I like a lot. It won't work for every kind of photography, but it suits my street-casual-non-pro style very well.

Same story here. I should have sold the K-5 (and Limiteds…) a long time ago. I'm glad they keep the GR line.

My last post was outdated again. New Flickr, new how-to!

1. Click the sharing button. It is located near the bottom right of the picture.

2. Click the "BBCode" tab.

3. Choose a size ("Large 1024 × 678" is fine for the forum) then copy the code and paste it directly in your message.

4. (optional) Modify the BBCode.
The code is actually two BB tags. You may want to keep each tag on a separate line, so that the name is always displayed below the picture, not next to it.
Or you may want to remove the link, and just keep the picture.

It's even easier now with the "new" Flickr.

1. On the photo page, click on the "Share this" drop-down.

Easy :)

Here is an example of a "small" image from my Flickr account:

How to do specific and separate lighting areas of a picture?

Oh my, you guys like to complicate things :)
Adjustment layers have been created precisely for this. Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > then choose the kind of adjustment you want. In jpzk's case I'd use Levels or Curves.

1. This is a picture with a dark corner of the top left, I'd like to lighten it a bit.

2. I add an adjustment layer (here I use curves) to lighten the shadows. You'll notice the mask is all white, so the curves are applied to the whole image.

3. Click on the mask (it has a border when it's selected) and fill it with black, so the curves are no longer applied and we see the original image.

4. Use a brush or airbrush or any other tool to "paint" the mask where you want the curve to apply with white.

So, why are adjustment layers better?
- one single layer
- non-destructive, if you double-click on the settings icon you can tweak the curves/levels/whatever again
- easier to understand than lightened/darkened copies of the original image with blend modes and masks

In Lightroom you can do the same, but with an interface and wording that make more sense for photographers: you over/under expose and "paint" it where you want in the picture. It's also non-destructive.

Help me replicate this effect? [photoshop]

If you can't find a ready-made filter to reproduce this effect, you can try this. Let's take a random picture from the interwebs.

1. Switch to CMYK mode and choose a channel that looks good (probably the Cyan channel, here the left one)

2. Copy that channel and paste it in the Magenta and Yellow ones. That's right, you'll end up with the exact same image in the three channels. Fill the Black channel with white (we don't need it.) At that point if you select the CMYK channel it should look like a sepia picture. (Sorry, French Photoshop :))

3. Select the content of the Cyan channel and move it to the left by the amount you need. Do the same with the Magenta channel, but by only half of that amount. Here I wanted the eyes to be side by side. An eye in this picture was about 150px wide so I moved the Cyan by 300px and the Magenta by 150px to the left.

4. Boost the contrasts your favorite way (curves, levels…) and voila!

(5. Optionnal) If a channel is not visible enough, you can select it and darken it a bit. The yellow channel usually needs some tweaking.
If you want to apply filters, vibrance, grain and so on, you may have to switch back to RGB mode. Keep in mind that you will then loose the ability to tweak the individual CMYK channels.

Shakespeare & Company is an English bookstore, and a fascinating place. It's quite famous not only because the shop is in a very old building, cramped and full of small corners and stairs and uneven walls, but because of the way it's managed.
"George Whitman has been running what he calls "a socialist utopia masquerading as a bookstore" for 50 years. His store has long been a literary hub, attracting the likes of Henry Miller, Richard Wright, and William Burroughs. More importantly, George has been inviting people to live in his shop from its very first days. There are now 13 beds among the books, and he says that more than 40,000 people have slept there at one time or another. All he asks is that you make your bed in the morning, help out in the shop, and read a book a day."
