canon and nikon seems to use a more agressive noise reduction resulting in less details but also less noise, to me it seems to be just a trade off, noise ninja and neat image do a great job at removing noise anyways

might as well try different arperture.. f4, f5.6, f8, f11 for both
something out of focus in the scene? to compare bokeh?

IMGP1614.JPG
Shutter count = 994
isnt that wierd?
hmm now that i think of it, could it be because i used the same memory card in my K100D? that had about 1100shots?

you remove it when using a polarizer filter, so you can rotate it without removing the lens hood!

best sharpness appears to be f/5.6 for mine, but the lens is already pretty sharp at f/4.0
f/8.0 might be best for corners sharpness tho

What i do is, when i'm about to put the camera in the bag, mount the lens hood in the opposite direction (reversed) and then put the lens cap on the lens..

Those dark spot on corners is vignetting, some lens will vignette at wide focal lenght, like the 18-55mm kit lens when used at 18-20mm, it is easy to fix it in most graphic softwares..
The lens hood must be used when the sun is on your sides to limit flare/glare that would kill contrast in your image... Its better to keep it on all the time when possible, as it will also protect the lens front element if the camera falls on the ground :)

Did the calibration changed the color much on your samsung 226bw?
im wondering because i have the 19" version of the same monitor series..
I'm interested in getting the Spyder2Express but i'm wondering if the monitor is already close to optimal colors?

not all SDHC cards get the same speed,
Class 2: 2 MB/s
Class 4: 4 MB/s
Class 6: 6 MB/s
those are minimums write speed, but they can go up to 20mb/s
I bought a 4gb SDHC card and ran a benchmark and i get 21mb/s read, 19mb/s write
I will test it in my K10D once i receive it, and compare my times with yours

SDHC standard allow up to 32gb, so i guess thats the maximum...
Im using a 4gb SDHC card in my k100d and it works perfect (updated firmware)
safe maximum for normal SD card is 2gb if its not SDHC

i dont know what winter means for someone from colorado...
but here temperature is around 15F down to -30F in the middle of winter..
I just go out like i do in the summer with camera and lens in bag,
its only when i come back home (before entering house) that i put my camera and lens in a plastic ziploc bag so the condensation will form on the bag, not on camera..
Keep the batteries in your pocket untill you are ready to shoot! because at -30F they dont last long at all!

True, because if you shoot RAW, and take a test shot at something using different "in camera" JPEG settings, all thumbnails/previews will look different, but the RAW images will all look the same once you open them.

I dont know how good the eneloop charger is.. but..
I charge my eneloops with a Maha MH-C204W , its a pretty nice battery charger,
small, easy to use, with nice feature like discharging, conditionning old batteries..
And a very good trickle charge that tops out batteries up to 98-99% of their max capacity..

You will notice it, not only for sharpness
the contrast is much better, almost like a prime,
its much better than the da18-55 at the wide range (16-24mm)
no vignetting at f5.6 and above at 16mm
the da16-45 got better sharpness at about any focal length, and straight from f/4, the edge sharpness is much better too!,
Overall i'd say the 16-45 is much better at wide focal length and, a tad better at longer focal length than the 18-55

nothing wider than 2.8 for zoom (well i think some brand made f2.0 zooms)
I guess if you dont really need the flexibility of changing focal length much, you'd be much happier with a prime, and your wallet would be alot happier too..

well you could try using a big ziploc bag, that is what i do when i come back from a winter shoot (before going in the house), its kinda the same as when you go from cold/dry A/C to hot/humid temperature... humidity will form on the outside of the bag while its warming up and when your camera is about the same temperature as outside you can take it out of the bag...
works great for winter, but i dunno if it would work as good for this.. you could try

After making an HDR image, i always end up with a "gray cast" like you got on your picture,
usually i go in photoshop and use unsharp mask as a local contrast enhancement, and i play with highlight/shadows adjustement, sometimes i apply some overlay to the image too...
anyways here is what i would have ended up with in photoshop after the photomatix treatment..
I probably went a bit too much with contrast enhancement tho, but as you can see the picture is "clear" and everything still has plenty of details!
