this pentax community is what reaffirms my choice in Pentax :P
thanks again for the quick replies

I rather do as much as I can to achieve the look I want internally with the camera in order to minimalize post-processing :P I'll practice more with my 50mm f/1.4 - that baby was definitely worth the money :P

I do want a pancake though!

thanks for the advice both of you and the kind words you Damn Brit :]

I want to be able to pull off shots like THIS:

I've attempted to achieve various different "looks" to my photos:
keepers - a set on Flickr

but have never been able to achieve a subtly desaturated and vignetted look that the above photo consists of - I have a Pentax K10d, with the kit 18-55mm and the indispensable FA-50mm. I'm self taught and the k10d was my first camera EVER (other than my cell phone camera!) so ANY advice at all is definitely welcome.

Please keep in mind that my work is amateur at best and I'm very aware of this ;) but please, anyone with expertise on the look of the photo at the very top please chime in!

thanks for all the kinds remarks so far :]

Tyler, I did get the gist of your suggestion and have figured out how to record and batch edit a custom action in photoshop. There seems to be, however, a problem with my workflow in that it will paste the cropped photo in a normal sized canvas (the photo's original resolution as black), thus creating the desired look, but it will paste all photos on top of each other.

Can anyone give me the precise steps to record an action with?

Thanks in advance!

I just recently returned from Honduras with a medical brigade team from my school.
I cropped many of the photos I took to a 16:9 aspect ratio and would like to add the black bars on top & bottom to frame the picture. Here is what I mean:

Photo after cropping:

Photo with intended black on top & bottom:

I've been doing this manually in photoshop, but I have about 300 more pictures to process like this and it would take too long! :p

Is there any automated process to do this? The text watermark I added is not necessary, I just want the black for all 16:9 pictures. Please let me know fellow Pentaxians if you have any clever and efficient ways to achieve this!

And if you're curious, all pictures are currently being uploaded to my flickr collection here:
Collection: USC GMB: Yoro, Honduras

any constructive criticism is greatly appreciated! I started to get interested in photography and only started just before the summer of 2007 - I still have much learning to do, so any help is welcome!

God bless & thanks in advance,
Jon

Regardless of lighting and/or ISO, dark colors on my pictures would come out really grainy (even ISO 100 or 200 at times!).

The problem looked really bad when looking back at pictures on the preview LCD and zooming in with the wheel, but doesn't appear AS bad when looking it on my computer (sample attached).

How can you test your sensor?

I unfortunately got some fine dust caught in my camera while I was in the Middle East (once my first "dusty" picture came out, I immediately went into a building and used the Rocket Blaster ... pictures were clear after that, but I'm scared it damaged the sensor - seems like reds come out overblown ever since... might just be me).

I'd appreciate any wisdom/advice/testing techniques form my fellow wise pentaxians :]

God bless,
Jon

thanks for the kind words all

it was a bit brighter than the pictures show that afternoon - I'm assuming it's a light metering issue - which metering mode should typically be used outdoors, in an urban setting, with the sun not at full brightness, but just under?

yeah the SMC-M 50/1.7 i awesome - of course I'd wish it autofocused (esp. for fast moving subjects) but can't complain for the price :P

I went to visit my grandmother who happens to live on right off of Hollywood Blvd. and went out to take a few pictures after a late lunch with family.

My k10d has only been in my hands for a little over a month, so please be kind!
I was bit too reserved to just start shootin' away at strangers so I ended up shooting a lot of the street performers. Tips and constructive criticism for street photography please!!!

:D haven't been on here for a while - finals were hectic, but now I'm on summer break :p - good to be back!

Pentax K10d - mmmmm that new camera smell

:) I'll be sure to make plenty!
I have a handy moleskine journal and pen always in my camera bag - I'll be sure that they're put to good use!

As always, I'm constantly amazed at the quality of people there are on this board.
Thanks again on your continued support in helping out this baby Pentaxian :)

I've updated my flickr (for those of you who are interested).
If you have a flickr account, please add me as a friend/contact!

I'm having trouble with a "orange-yellow" hue that's taking over most of my pictures (like in this one):
looking for something to turn on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

the lighting was actually under bright white fluorescent. I thought it was a White-Balance using, but it replicates all the same colors except under tungsten (which gives off a blue hue). I'm still trying to tackle all the diff. settings on a dSLR, so as usual, ANY tips/guidance is GREATLY appreciated!

is there such thing as a "new camera smell?"

Anyways, after months of researching, saving up and just plain waiting for the it to come, the k10d has finally made its grand arrival.

I took it around campus late last night (ended classes late in the evening) and the shots I've uploaded to flickr are the results.

All but 1 or w have been shot with a Pentax-M SMC 50mm f/1.7. This is my first dSLR ever, so you can spot all my mistakes very easily :) Manual focusing - man... and the lighthing I know can be improved dramatically in a lot of the shots. Well, in due time - I'm still learning :) Any tips appreciated!

don't be too harsh now :p

Any good bag for Pentax K100D?

I wanted a bag that doesn't look like a camera bag, so I opted for this:

Military Ops - Lima - Naneu Pro | Camera Bag & Laptop Case Solutions

It looked a bit shabby on the site, but upon arrival, I noticed it's very good build quality - made using all high-grade materials!

The bag comes with padded camera inserts that you can take out to convert the bag to an everyday bag if needed.

Got it here with 10% off coupon "bagsforme":
Naneu Pro Military Lima Briefcase Style Camera Bag

Naneu Pro also offers more "professional looking" bags. Check out their site :)

thank you all for your wonderful advice :)

I decided to hold off on the 50-200 lens and experiment with the 18-55 and the M50mm/1.7 prime. Hopefully I won't regret this in the future :)

thanks again & God bless,
Jon

"Wait"

for? :P

the rebate ends next Tuesday!

Should I jump for the 50-200mm within the week?

I've just purchased a Pentax-M 50mm f/1.7 (Gonna' have lots of fun [or frustration] working this one out). I'll also have the 18-55 kit lens.

2 lenses... more than enough to start off with - but do I cover all the bases now?

I've spent the past month going back and forth between the k100d and the k10d. Knowing that I'll be needing a camera in for the long haul (about 10 years O_O) and since I'll be going to the middle east once in a while (super dusty), I've chosen to go with the K10d.

First lens?
The standard Kit 18-55mm.

Second lens?
I'm currently watching ~15 auctions for a Pentax-M 50mm f/1.4 or 1.7 (probably going to go with the 1.7 to save a few $$$ - can't believe the disparity in price between the two is so great) - I just LOVE that creamy smooth bokeh both lenses produce - gonna' have to practice manual focusing though O_O

My closest friend who shoots (Ca___n EOS 20D  ) said I should definitely go for a zoom. I don't plan on doing any sports photography (like he does), but I figure when shooting crowds, street signs, etc. (I live in Los Angeles after all), it might save me having to walk across the street or be "in the face" of someone simply trying to hop onto the Metro to work.

So...third lens?
The obvious first consideration was the
Pentax DA 50-200mm f/4-5.6 ED
The $50 rebate makes it look mighty tempting (roughly around $150-170 from the cheapest I found on pricegrabber). The rebate ends this month so time's running out

Would anyone suggest NOT getting this lens and opting for a third party (Sigma, etc.) of similar or better quality and price? Or is it better to save the $150-$170 and use it on RAM or something else (Lightroom might run a bit better with more memory in my system :P).

Hefty post, I know - if you've read all of that, much of my gratitude to you :)

Thanks in advance - love this community!!!
God bless,
Jon
