Better lens for K100d - same, extra zoom or replace with Canon

G'day All

Well I bit the bullet and bought a new Pentax 16-45mm and I must say I'm impressed so far.

Great pics so far, fast and smooth zooming (the Sigma's zoom barrel was quite rigid), although I had to buy an extra bag to fit the camera and lens (the 16-45 is quite physically long).

Thanks for all your help and advice !!

You're right Rparmar about the debates with the decision on lenses.....

I have been reading lots of forum threads on this site and on dpreview, the pentax 16-45 and sigma 17-70 each have great IQ but do have their faults. I am now leaning towards the 16-45 as I only shoot 10% of my images at 45-50mm on existing lens and because it's a pentax. Couple of questions...again..

1. Is there a noticeable shadowing effect from the 16-45 when using the flash, as the lens extends on the wide end ?
2. Is the CA problem, on the 16-45, I've read and from the photozone review really that bad ? Is it noticeable ?

Again, many thanks in advance.

Cheers

Sigh.....decisions, decisions.... thanks for all you input.

I have narrowed the decision down further though. The Pentax 16-45 is too long for my liking and too expensive compared to other options. Revised options:

1. Buy the Pentax kit lens 18-55mm MKII, to use on my existing K100d, for roughly about $230 and then upgrade the whole setup later; like 12 months and sell K100d and sigma 18-50mm on ebay.

2. Buy the Sigma 17-70mm, to use on my existing K100d, as per point 1.

3. Buy a Pentax K200d with the 18-55mm MKII kit lens and flog the K100d on ebay, now rather than later so that I can get some decent value for it.

4. Buy a Pentax K200d with the Sigma 17-70mm and flog the K100d on ebay, now rather than later so that I can get some decent value for it. This option could be only $130 extra than option 2, assuming I could get $250 for my existing kit on ebay.

What does everyone think ? Sorry for the posts....in a real quandry...

Thanks everyone.

From reading reviews posts etc., I've decided against the superzoom 18-250mm; I don't think I'd need the reach anyway. Also, I'll keep the K100d body and wait until the Video revolution takes hold on the dslr's.

I've narrowed my choice down to either the Pentax DA 16-45 or the Sigma 17-70 (can't get the Pentax 17-70 as it won't work on the K100d). The Sigma is selling online (AUS) for $519 and the Pentax at $442.

What does everyone think ? I'm a bit hesitant on the Sigma to be honest as I've got the crappy kit lens, although the 17-70mm range is compelling.

Cheers

G'day All

I own a Pentax K100d with the Sigma kit lens (18-50mm F3.5-5.6 DC) and I have been relatively happy with the results. I mainly use the camera for general shots, scenery, traveling, hiking etc. I would, however, like to get a better lens (same or even an extra zoom) or get a new kit all together.

So here's the dilemma I would like assistance with, do I ?

1. Get a Pentax 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 AL DA II to replace the Sigma (Can get for about $250 Aussie) and flog the Sigma on ebay; OR

2. Get a Pentax 18-250mm DA F3.5 - 6.3 ED AL [IF] (can get for $700 Aussie) and flog the Sigma on ebay. The downside/upside is that I'm locked into Pentax bodies; OR

3. Get a Canon EOS 450d with the 18-55 IS kit lens for about a $700 Aussie changeover price. Would I notice a huge jump in image quality going from the K100d with the sigma lens to the EOS 450d ?

Sorry for the long winded post, just in a bit of a quandry + lens prices are set to rise.

Thanking you in advance

G'day All

I own a K100d with the Sigma 18-50mm kit lens. I use the camera for all sorts but mainly when on holidays and hiking taking pics of landscapes and scenery.

I'd like to get another lens that has a little more reach and don't won't to change lenses back and forth, perhaps a 18-125mm or 18-200mm.

- Any suggestions on a good lens better than what I've got ?
- Seeing as though I've had the camera for a couple of years, am I better off flogging it on ebay and buying a brand new camera (pentax, canon or nikon) with a 18-125mm lens ?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers
