The Sony a7RIII is about 2.5 grand so if this is about Money, the cost is a wash. He has Nikon Lenses so the 850 is another option for Full Frame.
My general point is that I see little investment by Pentax in MF and one buys into a system...where is the future of this system.
This is the main reason I sold off my 645D. And at the resolution of the 645D, one could get the Nikon or Sony but much better performance and High ISO

I had the 645D and sold it. Great images at low ISO but very limited camera. I would also question investing in Pentax MF when Fuji and others have shown up with more modern mirrorless designs.
In addition, Full Frame sensors have similar resolution to the 645D (like the sony A7RIII) and are more flexible and extensible systems.

at one time all the cog trains going up Mt. Washington were Fueled by wood or coal. Now most trains are biodiesel except this beautiful antique.

Agree on glass/ I have done research on the lens situation and
1) You can use Cannon Glass with adaptor and get full functionality.. some degradation in AF performance but people still do it.
2) I believe that Tamron and Sigma will expand their offering for E mount given the likely position Sony will have
3) You can use an adaptor for Pentax glass but deal with MF and manual aperture ( I think).

I was in Washington DC this week and went to the Natural History Museum. One of the exhibits was a wildlife photography exhibit, see link: 2013 Nature's Best Photography Windland Smith Rice International Awards
A couple of surprising things..
1) most of the shots taken with a Nikon or Canon. There were some Japanese landscapes taken with a K5. But no MF.
2) The shots were 48in by 36in and larger. The enlargements looked like paper encapsulated in Acrylic and were superb. Most of the shots were either 24 Mpixels or less (some D800/810) and some APSc. surprisingly the resolution at this size was quite good ( and I went really close).

Hi All
I was at CES this week (for business) but on thelast day i had time to look around and went to the camera area....
Ricoh-Pentax
Nice colorful wall display of the Q and K500 but I would have like to see a more serious display of the serious K3 and 645D (see below on Canon). Kerrick James was there and was pretty interactive with people, acting as a sales rep. I also met with product manager who was very knowledgeable and also very good with customers. I learned some tricks about using the K3/5.
The Q7 seemed to get a lot of attention as did the 645 D (the extremes) but most consumers thought the 645 was huge (what would you expect).
The product manager showed me image comparison of the Ricoh GR and the Canon 70D with a 28mm lens and the Ricoh outperformed it (nice little lens). I also played with the Q7 and the MX and to be honest, while the MX is very nice, The Q7 is smaller, more versatile and yet maintains the same sensor.
I of course asked about FF and based on the response (there are plans but the market has to be better). I am not holding my breath. Too Bad.
I got to play with the 20-40 LTD. Nice construction and size but to be honest, I think the Sigma 18-35 ( i also got to play with that at the Sigma booth) would be the way I go given the faster aperture and better range.
Canon
Had a very impressive booth with a grandstand of cameras on tripods with long lenses for users to use. I was very impressed. In addition, they spent considerable amount of booth space showing their lens technology and design. I think Pentax, who prides itself on lens esp. Limited, could do a better job here. For example, The Limited series with HD coating should be actively promoted. (why better? explain the coatings and resistance to flare. Show the Bokeh advantage). But the cameras are really big...
Sigma
I played with the 18 - 35f1,8 Nice lens. They have a display of cameras with a rep who offers lenses to put on Nikon, Canon and Sigma cameras..> the Pentax camera was not on display and when I ask to see the 18-35 on a pentax 1) They were not even aware that the 18-35 is being produced for kmount.. but they then corrected me stating that availability is out a few months. 2) they then pulled out the k30 from under the counter and had dig around for the 35 f14 art lens in K mount.. Bottom line. Nice lenses but they really did not seem to promote the kmount.

My sentiments entirely.
I have been a long pentax user resisting the pull from Nikon when I went digital 6 years ago. I felt that Pentax had the best APSc system. However, recently I think they showed poor strategy and as a result a lack of a roadmap to Full Frame.
1) the jump to 645d was not good as it involved investment in lenses for this mount when sensor advancement would enable FF to be competitive on quality with FF (at least at 40 Mpixels). I have A series 645 lenses and the fact that their value has not gone up much indicates that this mount is not doing well.
2) The K-01 design was different for the sake of being different. It is an ugly camera with poor usability (button placement, flaps, ect) . Also if they were committed to this idea, they should have rolled out better compact lenses such as a XS retro zoom. thus the overall camera size could be competitive with the Sony NEX with a lens mounted. But they release one lens, and the camera gets attacked for being FAT. Then you hear that the K-01 is an idea not a plan for K mount mirrorless. In a competitive market you cannot afford these half step mistakes.
3) The Q is actually quite interesting and the logic they used for this camera is that sensor technology gets better thus enabling a really small camera system. I think this makes sense. But if this is true then see point 1) and ask yourself why not invest in FF instead of 645D? Had they done so when they launched the 645D, they would have a better foothold in the FF market.
Nikon has the right system with FF and APSc lenses being usable on both systems.....I will wait just a little more to see what Pentax has to offer then probably move on.
I used to defend pentax in fora like this and on the Consumers Report forum.. No more.
