K20D vs K5

I got my K20D on a Christmas 2008 special from Adorama - $699 with the 18-55 pack-in lens, and Pentax had the additional 3YR extended warranty also for free. Shortly after, it shot back up to $1099.

If they have it on a similar sale during the holidays, i may jump, but if it's $1000+, I'd much rather invest in a better negative scanner for my MF film cameras, like the Microtek M1/m1 Pro. Currently using an Epson Perfection V700 Photo scanner - not bad, but not auto-focus like the M1, so it's a HUGE pain to scan, reset with the risers, re-scan to test, try another riser, etc...

Anyways, thanks for the info, and please continue with the comments...

Those that are commenting on the K20D to K7 upgrade, please continue - those are informational as well, as other will chime in about K7 to K5 upgrades, and I can re-assemble the info in my head.

Cheers!

K20D vs K5

Same weather-sealing as the K20D? Full Adobe RAW format?
Anything missing on the K-5 that's on the K20D?

EDIT: Two things that KILLS me on the K20D are the low-light AF, and slow AF.
I TOTALLY miss shots because of these, even at my son's HS graduation!
I missed shots on the K20D, that my wife got on a Ricoh XR-X (I think it was the XR-X - not sure - AF 35mm)

Frustrating, especially when some shot my Pentax P&S (Optio A40) can get, and the K20D REFUSES to take, or AF on...

So...is the K5 an upgrade from the K20D?

I remember a few things missing from the K7, like the AF points on the VF, etc...

Are we K20D owners still waiting for a true replacement, or is the K5 it?

Thanks!

K20D Discontinued?

Is it me?

pentaximaging.com shows the K20D, but clicking the "Buy Now" link gives a "item not available" error. Usually, if soemthing is sold out, it's still listed, but you can't purchase it.

Going straight to pentaxwebstore.com, and going to dSLR section shows no K20D any more.

Wonder if something new is coming down the pipe maybe?
I really don't see the K7 as a K20D replacement, at least not for me....

Best NiMH AA's you can get are probably GP (Gold Peak). It's what alot of folks use in RC Cars, and what I safeguard my cars with.

You can imagine what happens to a $500-$5000 RC Car/Plane when the radio dies because you tried to save $2-5 on a set of AA's.

I'll never make THAT mistake again - cost me nearly $200 in parts to repair a car!

They're probably only a couple bucks more for 4 AA's than that $20, but worth every penny. I just pulled out a set of 4 that I hadn't used in nearly 2 years, and they still can use nearly 70% of their rated capacity! Not bad for deteriorating on the shelf for almost 2 years!

Optio A40 reliability Q

Although I can't compare it to an A30 (never had it or was it) I HAVE owned an Optio A40 since March (Bought from Tuttle Camera in Cali) and am 110% pleased with it so far.

Took it with me on a marathon visit to 3 ships in Alaska in August, along with a K20D, and it had no issues working in the sub-40-degree temps. WHile it hasn't been dropped, abused, or mistreated, and always kept (when not in use) in the nylon pentax case, I haven't exactly treated it like gold, either. I've probably got about 1000-1500 shots through it, no complaints, no issues.

FYI, I got it from Tuttle on eBay, $130 including the Pentax case, and a Pentax 2YR extended warranty (3 total) although I don't think they have any left. Thought it was a good deal, and pulled the trigger. I was contemplating the Fuji F200EXR, and the Canon SX200is as well...

The one thing that you must remember about reviews, is one an item fails, people are WAY willing to be vocal about it.

When item works fine, which is expected, you don't hear much.
You'll usually only hear very much from the vocal majority...

Let me know if you want some full-res samples from that Alaska trip, and I can gather some up and email them to you. Alot of difficult scenes, like snow near greenery, all under an overcast sky, etc... Icebergs in the water, with green next to it...

You'd think....

I know it's been mentioned, the Ned Bunnell was contacted, and referred to the story and photos, buy nothing on Ned's blog.

Shame.

Excellent marketing angle pulls up in front of the Pentax house, and they choose to ignore it.

I think it's WAY cool, and definitely speaks of the equipment.
The marketing side, however....

K20D

Bought 12/14/2008
Paid $700 from Adorama, for the K20D, 18-55mm kit lens, 2nd battery, and Pentax had the 3Y extended warranty (4Y total), and free shipping to boot.

Unbeatable deal, still a good deal 9 mos later, and have enjoyed the camera!

Liked it so much, 3/10/2009, bought an Optio A40 from TuttleCamera in Cali -
$130 for the camera, case, 2Y Pentax extended warranty, free shipping - again, how can ya beat it???
Wanted a P&S with more control, and it offers Tv and full manual mode, decent video, and same IR remote between the K20D and Optio A40.

Couple more...these are chronologically before the first I posted. First one I posted was roughly 5:42PM Alaska Time.

First one is roughly 5:14Pm Alaska time, second is about 5:26PM Alaska time, all 3 same date, 8/4/2009, same camera: Pentax Optio A40.

These two are on the way to view Sawyer Glacier, still in Alaska's Inside Passage.

How about, the inside passage, heading to, and looking at, Sawyer Glacier in Alaska?
This was aboard the Norwegian Star, Norwegian Cruise Line, August 4, 2009.
This was taken with a Pentax Optio A40, 1/319 exposure, 23.7mm focal length, original is 4000x3000 pixels.

I was in Alaska from 8/2 until 8/13, and took roughly 1200 photos on the K20D, and about 100-150 on the A40, and about 50 videos also on the A40. I could NOT have been more happy with the performance of the Pentax gear in the sub-40-degree weather.

Well, if you're not doing well, saving a couple bux on camera gear is not worth risking health for.
However, if you do get out, it would be most appreciated. I could immediately paypal the $$ over if you have paypal, plus a little some-some for the trouble. If not, I can priority mail a check over.

As to the batteries, if they have a D-LI8 cheap (Optio A40) I wouldn't mind...that's been "commandeered" by the wife :)

Actually, if the stuff is available in Atlanta, a pointer would help - I have 1 cousin in Atlanta, and another near Valdosta (in Lake Park).

VERY generous offer.
However, the D-Li68 is for the Optio S10 and S12.

I made the same mistake - bought it at a Ritz with no info available instantly, wife in a hurry, and it's NOT for the A40 (D-Li8).

No matter - I knew it was a risk, and it was like $10 or so!

So - if ya got an A40 - this ain't the battery for it!

Generous offer, though, Russ!

Would anyone get one of these cheap BG's for me?
I'd pay you for your time....

I've driven over 300 miles within a week Ritz-hunting, and only thing I found, was a BG3...

I'd like 1-2 of the batteries, and one of the BG2's for my K20D.

W60 Image stabilization

The Optio A40 also has REAL Image Stabilization, as well as the artifical digital "flavor."
On the A40, it's called Sensor Shift Shake Reduction. Also has Digital SR, and Movie SR.
I think the Optio Axx are the only Pentaxen Compacts to have non-digital SR.

Just picked one up from Tuttle Camera in Long Beach on fleaBay for $140, incl. Pentax Case ($15 normally) and Pentax 2YR ext. Warranty ($50 normally). Couldn't really turn the deal down, with the add-ons. Can't drag my K20 everywhere! Am thinking of ordering an M50 from them for the wife, as well, to replace her 5MP HP - the thing is nearly useless! Maybe a Z10 for the slightly bigger zoom range (7x vs 5x), but haven't quite decided yet.

Best Buy has the Sandisk Extreme III 30MB/sec Edition SDHC cards for $39.99 right now.

SanDisk - Extreme III 8GB Secure Digital Media Card - SDSDX3-008G-A31

Most stores have these in stock, so I picked up two last night.

These are the xx-A31 30MB/Sec cards, which I think is the best they make in SD/HC at this time.

Well, BB swapped it out. I told them what I thought had occurred (someone bought a fake online, then swapped it out at BB) and they gave me no trouble at all.

Kudos to BB - I was worried they'd give me grief, but it was quite the opposite.

Duuuuuude!!!

Thanks for that link! For the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to meter with an all-manual lens!
Manual says to use the DOF preview on the power switch, but I'd flick it, and nothing. Ya gotta HOLD it for a sec! DOH!

Mucho thanks!

off the trail...I'm in a one-night-a-week digi photog class, about 12Nikonians, 10 Canonites, and me and the only Oly guy sit together, as we're in Siberia...

Kinda' funny, though - I throw my jabs in.
The Prof was explaining pre-focus, and I blurted out that if they had a K20D, they could just use the Catch In-Focus feature...

They were discussing lenses, and how the VR lenses were expensive, yep - you guessed it, me and the Oly guy spewed the virtues of in-body SR.

Tue night, he mentioned the outing at the park on Saturday, and that if it rained he;d cancel.
Of course, I blurted out that with a K20D and a DA* lens, no worries...

One guy was trying REALLY hard to get a shot of the full moon (Canon XSi) and he couldn't get the metering to work right - he kept getting a bright circle on a black background. Just looked like a flashlight in the dark

I busted out an '80's vintage Vivitar 70-150mm lens, and started snapping pics, and they were all shocked - surely the "superior" CaNikon can do this, yes?

Um, no - the D40/D60 people were surprised that they didn't even have a focus motor in their bodies!

The more I use my K20D, the more I love it, and the more sure I am that I made the right decision.

Counterfeit SanDisk Extreme III SDHC at Best Buy?

Yep - first thing I though strange, was that it was blue.
SanDisk uses blue for only the consumer-grade SD cards.

Extreme's are black, I think even my older Ultra II's are black, as well.
The Extreme III's also have that strange dual-row of dots, also.

This wasn't even a clever attempt - it's not even close.
Even the label is not put on correctly :)

You guys REALLY want to have a laugh?
I only told HALF the story....

I went in there, and bought two of the Extreme III's - wasn't paying close attention, as the cashier was on the store radio, and I was half on a phone call...

When i got home, I realized they charged me for 1, yet I had two.
Now, I believe somewhat in kharma, or actually, in "what goes around comes around."
But, an angel I am not.

I figured the right thing to do, was to call, and so I did. Spoke with a lady at the CS counter, explained the situation to her, she pulled up my receipt, and asked me to hold.

3-4 minutes later, she came back, and said she spoke to the manager, and that he sent a message to thank me for being honest, and for the gesture, to keep the 2nd one, no cost.

Doing a good thing, 1 of the two was a fake that was returned.

What's that saying - no good deed goes unpunished?

Counterfeit SanDisk Extreme III SDHC at Best Buy?

Yep!

Saw their circular online today, $39.99 for the SanDisk Extreme II 8GB SDHC 30MB/Sec edition.
I HATE buying memory cards online, because of counterfeit risks...

Went in, bought 2, came home, and when is a counterfeit!

I popped it in my K20D, light came on, then I got a Memory Full error.
At this point, I didn;t know yet, although the fact that it was blue kind of hit me wierd - all my other E3's are black!

Popped it in my laptop, figuring it might need a format, and windows format said it was 14.6MB.
At this point, I just figured I had a bad card.

Got SanDisk's number and called, guy asked me for a number from the back, and low and behold, it says "16MB" on the back. Front has a decent-enough looking "Extreme III 30MB/s Edition" label on it.

So, now we can't even trust the retailers to buy through the proper channels?
The box was sealed with the round sealing clear tape, the inside plastic container was melt-sealed (I cut it open with scissors).

I assume it will be a huge ordeal to return this, as Best Buy could easily accuse me of trying to swap out a fake for a real one. Guess I could just ask for an exchange as it is defective.

What a nightmare...

We're getting to the point where we're going to need to open them right there at the register, and confirm with SanDisk that they are genuine!!!

UPDATE: After REALLY close scrutiny, looks like someone returned a fake in the box. Looking at the tape with a magnifying glass, shows that it was removed, and I found the slit in the plastic container where they slid the real card out, and the fake in.

I enter the the FL of the lens itself.

FYI - I think this is only for SR, because when my SR is off, it doesn't ask that.
