New 645z - dodged a bullet with firmware update

From what I remember with my last update the camera also shut down by itself. It could be that it showed "complete" and that I didn't see it and then shut down by itself. Either way, mine also "took" the update and is working fine.

Enjoy your new "companion".

I’ve had that happen on one of my updates too. Like TDvN57 said, it probably flashed complete that I didn’t see before it went blank.
Good shooting

We need a camera reboot

Some of us younger folk don't like photographing on phones at all, and appreciate the options of devices actually fit for purpose. If anything, I see mostly older people, who were already casual users (because there wasn't anything good enough), get lazier with age, and just fall back on the phone as long as it is "good enough".

The problem is that we are all dirt poor and can't very well spend thousands on photo gear, when pesky things such as "rent" or "fuel" are in the horizon :D

Nikon F Mount and the K1/II successor...

The reason why manufacturers are changing mounts is primarily because they hope it will benefit their bottom line. The claim is that it helps lens design, that auto focus is better with PDAF on the sensor, and that everyone wants EVFs.

On the other hand, it is pretty clear that brands saw an opportunity to re-sell lenses to the photographers that use their cameras. The Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR II sells for 1800 dollars. The Z mount 70-200 f2.8 is 2700 dollars. I'm sure the Z mount lens is a little better. It also weighs about 90 grams less, but you can't tell me that Nikon didn't see dollar signs when they decided to move to the Z mount. They are selling a 50mm f1.4 lens for 640 dollars, a 24-70 f2.8 for 2400 dollars, and their 14-24 f2.8 for 2500 dollars (B and H prices).

Some people need something that mirrorless offers -- they need faster frame rates, better video performance, but for those who mainly shoot still photography, the benefits are minimal and the costs are high once you factor in the prices for new, brand name glass in the new mount.

Pentax will be releasing a new full frame camera within the next year. That camera will (eventually) get a monochrome version as well. There is no sense releasing a monochrome version of a camera that is on its way out.

I think K-3 III is the best looking DSLR from Pentax. I don't like the "nose" on other models where the flash of the camera is extending over the lens.

This K-3 III Monochrome is even better looking with it's white text and buttons :-)

The use of pastel color pencils made me smile ;) I think after having spent the money on the camera and 31 limited lens no money is left for a set of R G B pencils :)

NEW K-3 III Firmware 1.80 is out

A link to an article with some image samples is here.

https://pentaxofficial.com/18197/

They say the image profile:
- Emphasizes the pale pink (red) of cherry blossom petals
- Slightly dull blue that expresses the sky of spring haze
- Creates high-contrast images

This one looks very nice. I have the camera. I have the lens. Tokyo will be full of Cherry blossom very soon. What’s not to like?

No one is disagreeing that Japan is the primary market. But still, being only dimly aware of the web's primary resource for their products is worrisome. There are the forums of course, but also the tests and reviews, articles, comparisons, a lot of stuff that could have an impact on their understanding of how the market perceives their products.

If it was me, I'd have a constant and open presence in the forum, and I would make sure all my designers read the in-depth and users reviews, these are the people giving money to your company, their opinion is useful and free.

That is, by far, the most alarming element in your otherwise positive report. Connecting with your audience is more important for the Product Line Management team but still key for designers and R&D. Especially when it's out there and requires no particular effort.

K3iii Monochrome rumors

I can't imagine my spending money on what looks to me as a 'crippled' digital camera - but as someone is bound to point out, I cannot image my spending money on a perfect K-3iii. Back in film days I would sometimes have my backup camera loaded with B&W film in the summertime, but then I would load that same camera with high-speed film during the wintertime holidays. This seems to be the only thread in this section getting traffic today - if some of those same people send their own money to Pentax for one of those cameras, I guess I won't complain, nor would I complain if Pentax would break even on such a camera. I'll just mark it as "one of those inexplicable things".

Just to share a little bit of history, an image of the K3 Prestige from nearly 10 years ago:

The aesthetic is similar. The lettering on the most used buttons has warn off but muscle memory takes over.

In some ways, with PENTAX blind debossed (and hard to read) it almost has the opposite effect of creating an interest for others to look at it. For various reasons, many photographers have DIY this with their cameras using either black tape or a black marker.

K3iii + DJI RS2 - My findings

Correct, the HDMI out on the camera goes into the Raveneye module, which then sends the live feed into the DJI app on my phone via WiFi. The app or gimbal can trigger the recording. You are correct, it's the 3.5mm plug

It seems that the DJI software is able to recognize objects through the camera feed and tells the gimbal to track accordingly.

I'm still figuring the focus component to this out, in the quick clip I just threw together the AF-C did not work at all. Going to dig into this one more because the tracking is kind of moot without having the subject in focus.

So far so good though, I think that this combo is going to do what I need it to do

K3iii + DJI RS2 - My findings

Before we jump into things, a little bit of background: I'm a still photographer who was recently looped into video production. It seems everybody is using gimbals these days, so I wanted to get in on that super smooth footage. I landed on the DJI RS2, which can carry a payload of 10 lbs. Perfect for the K3iii and 16-50 PLM.

I purchased this gimbal "Pro-pack" used from a reputable site with the full expectation that I would not be able to access all of the features offered by DJI, since the K3iii (or Pentax as a whole) is not listed as compatible on their website. But I figured with some practice and the AF-C capabilities of the Pentax combo, I could make it work.

After some digging, I came across a DJI forum post that indicated that the camera would interface with the Fujifilm cable, so I got one of those too. Sure enough, with the new cable I was able to control the shutter functions from the gimbal, both focus and start/stop recording.

Then I dug the Raveneye module out, a piece of hardware that would allow the gimbal to lock on to and track objects, through the eye of the camera sensor. At least with compatible cameras. I followed their tutorial and connected everything per DJI and lo and behold, it works! Via the DJI app on my Galaxy S22, I'm able to control the camera and gimbal in sync and can track objects as the system was designed. It's worth noting that the camera does not seem to focus via the external control motor in this mode, but rather continues to use the (slow) AF-C native to the K3iii.

As I continue to experiment with this and create test footage, I'll be sure to continue to share what I learn. Pentax may not make dedicated video cameras, but I'll be darned if I have to switch to another ecosystem to make quality films.

Feel free ask any questions and I'll do my best to answer them.
