I would have to agree with you ScooterMaxi (like your images), cold crisp weather provides some of the best images of the four seasons. I also shoot 20x more insub zero than in the rain. Glad to hear the K-01 handles it fine. Fedx should have mine hear by January 3rd.

I was out for most of the afternoon today shooting a Sony A65 in 12F temps and had my shutter button stop functioning. Three times I had to jump back into the Jeep to warm the camera up and it did start working again after a short warm up. I've never had this problem with my Pentax K-x or any of the Pentax film cameras that I have. So at $316.00 US I've been thinking about a K-01 if it makes a good winter-low temps camera. Thanks for your time.

You’re right ugly as a “mud fence” but now I can’t wait to find a mud fence to shoot with it. The M and the 200 are a little more versatile and the 100 is a little lighter. I kept just the 200 because I thought it being all black made it the best looking one. I had at one time all four lenses but sold the most prized one the 135mm and actually put that money into my 645N. I mainly use the 58mm Hexanon which takes an old Series something filter size. Nothing modern fits it so I had SK Grimes make an adapter ring to go from the Series size which is close to 54.?mm to a 58mm filter ring. Why not color? Because I like using a polarizer and that’s hard to do on a rangefinder and the SMC Pentax glass renders perhaps richer colors. On the other hand I have I have a 20x30 night shot-star trails on the wall from the Koni and the colors are really rich. Of course color saturation is all adjustable in software. The 58mm is really sharp. If you call Paul Ebel at Lens Services is Wisconsin he’ll tell you it is one of the best lenses ever made. So pretty much leave a red-orange BW filter on the 58mm all the time and shoot the now discontinued Fuji Neopan 400 as film of choice. I only have about 20 rolls left in the freeze and now see Fuji is discontinuing Across 100. I also really like Rollie IR 400. That’s a whole different forum.
Now if you pick an outfit up on EBay and find your not getting the results you should, it probably is a problem with the film back. They have to be properly serviced or the focus will be off. Every film back I won off EBay had to be sent to Greg Weber in Nebraska for service. In fact the best bet might be buying a camera and film back from Greg because you’re going to end up sending it all there any way.
In very cold temps the film back can get stiff to pull and push. I use a tripod always no matter what film camera (digital not included)! This camera like the 645N allows you to put a Arca mount on two sides. You can easily put a spirit level on top. The 200 allows mid roll film change the 645N does not. This is a great night photography camera as is the 645N.
When you’re at a National Park using this camera people are just totally dumb founded and think it’s something built by NASA.

Number 2 on the list is my Ebony S45 large format camera and number 3 is the Fuji GA645ZI. Since I mainly shoot landscape and print big, size matters. Regretfully the wind blows here most of the time and limits my usage of the Ebony so the 67II gets used more. The ZI gets used more than the 645N because it is remarkably smaller and is like carrying several lenses in one. The ZI is smaller than a 645n zoom alone. I always shoot both color and black and white at the same time and the Fuji ZI meters perfectly with a red-orange filter on it. The 645n with zoom is so big so why not just grab the 67II. I purchased the 645n as a backup for the 67II and it does the job nicely. I mainly get to my locations from a motorcycle or a Jeep. The ZI and K-x fit nicely together in the tank bag and I carry a tripod and the bigger cameras on the back of the bike. The ZI also makes a great travelling companion with a TLR. Number 5 film camera on my list is the Rapid Omega 200, another great one for B&W 6x7. If I could a afford a 645D, it would certainly be number one on the list.

I have both the Pentax 645N and the 67II. Whenever you get a WOW picture on the 645 you'll wish it was on the 67. Loading and shooting is faster with the 645. The 645N is more durable than the 67II as my 67II has been Pentax for repair about five times. If I had to choose between all my film cameras as to a favorite, it would be the 67II. The 645N would be number four on my favorites list. Since 645N lenses are said to have skyrocketed in price, you might want to consider the Fuji GA645ZI as a partner to the 67II. The ZI lens is as sharp with superb color as any Pentax lens I own. Keep your Yashica TLR. I have the Yashicamat D and have several 20x20 black & whites on the wall from it and people are always amazed when I tell them which camera they came from.

jbander, I wouldn't totally ignore Adam's advice. I think the 67 was designed to be hand held but with the variety of high speed 120 film shrinking all to fast, it's going to get hard to do. I am not sure what model 67 you have but I use the factory strap on mine.

I've tried hand holding my 67II numerous times for fleeting landscape exposures and none of the shots have passed the scrutiny of my 8x loupe. Film is expensive and a tripod with an Arca plate is just so easy to use that I rather not waste film. Please note I shoot landscape with PanF50 or Velvia 50 and rarely take any lens off f22.

My star cameras besides the 645n with the 45mm f2.8 are the Pentax 67II with 75mm F2.8 lens. Mamiya c330s with the 65mm or 55mm lens (the 65mm is faster), and a Rapid Omega 200 with the 58mm lens (the slowest lens). That is also the order I use most frequently. The Rapid Omega with the 58mm is a very sharp wide angle 6x7 format camera with interchangeable back with the only disadvantage being the slow lens speed. The Mamiya has a flat film path which is best for freezing cold winter nights. My film of choice is the discontinued Kodak 160T ( I have about 10 rolls left in the freezer.) My second choice film has become Kodak Ektachrome E200 which has just been discontinued (I just picked up 35 rolls to put in the freezer). Through the years I have picked up off eBay three very heavy Studex Performance tripods with heavy tripod heads. For the last twenty years I have only shot star trails, but starting this spring I built a hinge star tracker that allows you to follow the rotation of the earth to get very bright stars, loads of stars the eye can not see. Now I use multiple tripods getting star trails and fixed stars on the same night out. You can Google hinge star trackers, Scottish star tracker, or something like barn door star tracker, but the book is “Handbook for Star Trackers” by Jim Ballard. Out of print but I found it on Amazon. On building a star tracker use at least an 8 inch long piano hinge and very sturdy wood such as Oak. My first star tracker had to much slop in the hinge. I use a ball head on the tracker to hold the Pentax. I did the bent threaded rod and my first 10 minute exposures are not showing any movement. My 15 and twenty minute exposures should be coming back in this week’s mail. Since the film is in short supply, I finish a roll which may take months. My subject of choice is based on where I live, old abandon homesteads and farm houses. I quickly paint the subject at two different angles with a hand held spot light at f8 or f11 then run pack to the tripods and open up the lenses all the way. The camera for star trails is on its’ own and the star tracker camera requires me to turn it at one revolution per minute with my eyes glued to a stop watch. I use a mechanical shutter release cable on all the cameras including the 645n. I get the best blue in the sky shortly after the stars come out. I shoot only on a new moon, or one day before or one day after. The sky has to be cloudless. If you get green skies you might try a fluorescent light filter. Since I work I can only do new moons when I don’t have to work the next day because sometimes I get pumped and I stay out till sun comes up. I built the star tracker last January and only two nights have met all the right conditions. Several times I have set up before sunset only to have clouds move in before the stars came out. As to the hand held spot lights get at least three big bright ones, I got mine at Lowes. The lights go dim fast, especially in the winter. I have used a hot shoe style flash but the spot light allows me to paint just what I want in the picture. Now as to posting pictures of the star tracker itself and the results, well I am not a computer wizard (that’s why I still shoot film) I’ll try to get it done with the help of my daughter by the end of September, so keep checking back.

You’r really going to like the Pentax 645n. You’ll find that this camera is not like a digital that you need a 300 page manual, instead at best this camera needs a 3 page manual, it’s so simple to use. I shoot landscapes from my BMW F650 GS dual sport motorcycle and the 645 is the camera I place in the tank bag the most of the time. I shoot from a tripod 99.9% of the time. The tripod I carry on the bike is Gitzo G1298 Bassalt with a NovoFlex Magic Ball with an Arca Q Base mount. The quick release plates I use on the camera are Really Right Stuff Arca mounts. You are starting off with two really nice lenses; all the 645 lenses are great. I really like the 45mm f2.8 for astro photography-night shots. Some days I carry the 45-85mm zoom on the bike and other times I grab the 55mm A lens and the older 150mm A lens with the built in hood. As to black and white, you could easily spend the next two years deciding on your favorite films. I like the new Tmax 400 and Ilfords Panf 50. Also check out dr5chrome lab for positives of Ilford films. I first started off using the 120 film holders but now a prefer shooting the 220 film length. Enjoy!

Sorry Chis not always. I purchased a used medium format slide projector at f11 in Bozeman Montana two years ago for around $69.00. I also scored a Minolta Multi Scan Pro on eBay in mint condition for less that an Epson v700. Light table and the same as Bloggs stated.

I have the newer 55 and the 75 f2.8 lens. Can't say which one is least but the 75 definately has some. I believe I saw this covered on Photo.net when they had a section on pentax 67 lenses. Check there.

I don't have any complaints about any 67 lens I own but I am thinking the SMC 67 165mm f2.8 is extremely sharp. There is a section on 67 lenses over at photo.net

I am still waiting for the digital camera that will replace medium format film. As to Medium Format Forums, check out Photography community, including forums, reviews, and galleries from Photo.net As to shooting 40-50s medium format cameras I used to have a big collection of 120 folders purchased from Jurgen Kreckel that I sold last winter. The folders are fun but not that consistent nor that sharp. Constant folding changes the angle of the lens to the film plane. The sharpest of the bunch (the one I kept) and the worst ergonomically is the Certo Six. Just about any TLR with a Tessar style lens will blow away the folders even a $12.00 Ciro Flex. For TLRs I have Autocords, Diacords, Yashica D, Rolleiflex 3.5e, Rolleicord Vb, Mamiya C220s, Mamiya c330s, and two Kalloflexs. They are all outstanding shooters. There is a lot of great film available, Fuji Provia 100F, Kodak E100vs, and loads of black and white like the new Tmax400 and Ilford’s Pan F 50. The best medium format cameras by the way were built by Pentax!!!

Listen to Ron, he truly knows and as K100d says you will be thinking “I got to try bigger.” Slide film is not overwhelming, bracket ˝ to one stop over and under. Any currently available slide film is great. If you take a color negative to five different color labs, you will get five different colored prints. With positives the lab knows what color it is obligated to match. Request your E6 lab (check out Photo Craft in Boulder, CO) return sleeved clear uncut (saves money.) I would suggest a Gepe Pro Slim Viewer, an 8x12 sells for 97.50 at B&H. For a loupe, I would recommend either a Fuji, Calumet, or Rodenstock 4X. These sell on eBay for $70-$80. Don’t worry about buying a scanner, you are going to be thinking “I got to shoot more and start building a chrome library.” For now you can have your favorites scanned and keep an eye on eBay for a Minolta Multi Scan Pro. Chrome has color, sharpness, and 3d imaging that I don’t see in my A700 digital files. Why are 60s and 70s rangefinders so hot? Because when shooting slides these cameras compete with today’s most expensive digitals. Once you start getting blown out of your socks with chromes you are going to be thinking bigger and there Pentax has an answer for you called 67II and 645N. For far less money and still a lot of fun is a TLR such a Yashicamat D, Minolta Autocord, or even a $17.00 Ciro Flex that will compete with my Sony A700. Just wait until you start viewing your own 4x5 chromes on a light box and start printing nothing smaller than 30x40”. Slide films are very archival; my father’s 50 year old Kodachromes look great. The most archival is Black and White and you may have not known but you can process B&W as a positive, (check out dr5.com). When you view B&W positives on a light table you’re going to see why many say digital in camera B&W sucks. If Kodak E100VS or Fuji Velvia blows your socks off, you’ll find dr5 B&W positives will blow you out of your rubber waders.

Thanks for the reply. B&H list the hood as "Accepting Orders." So I ordered one, now wait and see if it actually comes. I tried a wide angle collapsible rubber lense hood and it was just to big. A regular non wide angle one might work better. I love this lens also.

Here are a few more details on my Pentax 67II and my lens choices. Why the Pentax 67II? Because I was getting really frustrated with the limitations and poor results I was obtaining from the vintage 6x6 and 6x9 folders I had purchased from Jurgen Kreckel. After testing my son’s Fuji GSW690, it came down to a choice between the Fuji and the 67II. Both are great and someday I’ll add the Fuji 6x9 to the camera bag. I chose the 67II for the excellent through the lens metering and the great selection of interchangeable lenses. I did not need interchangeable back since it only takes 10 exposures to rip though a roll of film. I shoot mainly landscape and my most locally available subject, abandoned farm houses. My first two lenses purchases where the 55mm and the 200mm because they shared the same filter size and because they were close equivalents to my favorite 35mm primes. When it was announced that the 67II had been discontinued, I quickly purchased what I believe was the last 75mm 2.8 that B&H had on the shelf. I could have called the bag full but with all the good 67II buys available on eBay I have also added the 90mm, 135mm, and the 165mm. All these 67II lenses are great, no complaints about any. The 75mm 2.8 is my favorite because of its’ smaller physical size, 67mm filter size, speed, and focal length. When cruising the country side on my enduro dual sport motorcycle, the 75mm and 165mm are the ones in my tank bag. My least used lens is the 200mm but when I do grab it, it is usually with a tele-extender. I shoot mainly B&W and the chrome films E100vs and Fuji 400x. View a 67II chrome on the light table and you will know why I feel it is a camera I cannot live without.

I have been using a DA 40mm on a Pentax 35mm film *ist for about eight months and would like to say that the combo has become my 35mm film camera of choice. Back eight months ago, Pentax's website even listed the lens as usable on full frame film cameras. I have been using this combo all winter on the ski slopes and used it all last fall to meter for my vintage twin lens reflexes. No problem with light fall off or filters. Since I only shoot chrome, E100Vs or Provia 400X, and can tell you that after louping these with a Mamiya 8X loupe and a Rodenstock 4X loupe, that this lens and camera are very sharp with great color. Since putting this lens and camera together, my point and shoot digitals have seen little use.

Favorite 67 lens is the 75mm 2.8, followed by the 165mm and 55mm. I shoot mainly landscape photography and I especially like the 75mm 2.8 for night photography. I tripod my 67II but then I tripod everything including my image stabilized A700. My 67II is one of four cameras I would never part with, the other three being a Pentax 645N, Ebony 4x5, and a Fuji GA645ZI.

I have a Pentax 67II with six lenses and the AE prism. Of the lenses I use the 75mm f2.8 the most. Without the AE prism I would find this camera loads less enjoyable. For digital slr I have a Sony A700. I shoot in the reverse order you suggest. I'll shoot the 67 or my Ebony 4x5 first and a digital camera is the last one I'll grab. I just don't like the look of big 20" and bigger digital prints. Just my preferences.
