Why do these low-light flashed pictures look so well?

Surprised nobody has mentioned a pocket bouncer. I had very good results with these, granted that the last time I shot a "party-light" event - I had a NIkon rig where camera meters properly regardless of where the flash is pointing.

Haven't shot with a flash gun since I've picked up a Pentax setup again. Have they corrected the metering issues when the flash is pointed elsewhere but in the face?

K5II & battery problem

Got a really weird one here:

-a basically brand new K5II body, less than 200 shots
-decided to "top-off" the battery before weekend
-once the battery was charged I've installed it in the camera and forgot about - that was last night
-this morning however, when I've tried to turn the camera on it was as dead as a brick
-removed the battery, inserted it again, boom! Camera powers up, but only shows 3/4 of the remaining charge.
-used the camera to take about 150 shots, came back home and threw the battery on the charger again
-about 45mins later, re-installed a fully-charged battery in the camera - It's a Brick again!!!! WTF???
-Checked the battery with a voltmeter - showing 8.34V - will let it rest....

What's next?:hmm: Anybody else had these issues? Really don't feel like sending the camera into service 2 weeks after getting it...:(

Pentax DA 18-135mm, general discussions and samples

Guys you should seriously consider going out more often or/and renting a studio with a naked model...

As i've said in another thread, 18-135 is a damn super-zoom lens!!! that's 28-200mm in FF terms for god's sake and it should be treated as such!!!

I owe one as well and it's the lens that spends the most time on the camera. The damn thing is very compact, sealed and it's the fastest-focusing Pentax lens to date... and IQ is good enough that I don't have to think about it...

In other words, is the best hiking and all-around lens on the market to date... But if you're expecting miracles from a super-zoom... perhaps you should stick to gardening or gold fishes...

Yes there's distorting all over the zoom range... so what? A little distorting doesn't heart when every second idiot can buy a decent camera and pretend to be a photographer... Photography was never about sharpness being eye-pooping sharp or straight lines being truly straight...

K5/A550/D7000 sensor and diffraction limited aperture...

Came across a great article on diffraction limited aperture. These who can read in Russian, please help your-self:

VladimirMedvedev.com - Таблица характеристик матриц цифровых фотоаппаратов.

For these who can't, you can still check out the diffraction limit table at the bottom of the article, only need to pay attention to the red column and the respectable camera model.

Long story short, 16MP APS-C sized sensor used in K5/A550/D7000 has a diffraction limit of f/8.6 Which in practice means that after f/8.6 you'll start loosing sharpness.

So much for chasing stains at f32....:hmm:

I guess Nikon wasn't so wrong by sticking with "only" 12MPs for their FF cameras...

Thinking of switching from Nikon D300s

You have to clearly understand what you'll be gaining and what you'll giving up while switching to K5.

K5 - the "+":
-size
-much newer sensor with better both low-iso and high-iso, bigger resolution and awesome dynamic range.
-in-body SR
-whisper-quite shutter
-probably better out-of-the-camera JPG as D300s is really intended for the RAW-users
-LTD primes (the smallest primes for any APS-C and FF systems)
-"over 30 years of K and m42 glass"
-better auto-iso
*I'm not including WR in the "+"es as it's of any importance only if you stick to WR'ed lenses, otherwise it's just a fetish-gimmick for Pentaxians to go orgasmic about.

K5 - the "-":
-stone-aged AF. Yes K5 is a huge improvement over the previous Pentax bodies, but it's still light-years behind the D300s/7D. In all departments: accuracy, consistency, # of AF points, tracking). D90 actually has a better AF than K5.
-very limited choice of lenses and for the most part, quality Pentax glass is more expensive. Used market is almost non-existent.
-if you're planing to use the flash in any other modes than directly in-da-face, full-manual is the only way to be on the same wavelength with the camera. Same goes for wireless.
-high pixel density sensor (same goes for the Nikon D7000), which implies big RAW-files, which implies that if you're shooting a lot and processing a lot - you gonna question your need for extra 4MPs a lot, as it does slow things down.
-finniky QC.
-Dodgy SDM in DA* lenses

D300s the "+":
-AF
-FLASH that just works!!! no questions asked!!!
-12mp sensor that produces considerably smaller files.
-huge used market
-huge choice of lenses
-over 30 years of F-mount glass.
-better compatibility with mass-consumer PP-software (RAW processing)
-all pentax DA* glass available from Tokina for the fraction of what Pentax costs, without the WR that is, and without SDM troubles.
-overall handling of the camera that is very robust, professional, dependent and consistent. Pentax gear always has some degree of "toy" feeling to it.

D300s the "-":
-damn bulky!!!
-loud shutter
-dated sensor
-noisy low-iso
-only in-lens VR
-finniky AUTO-ISO that only suits prime lenses and still requires some manual input.

If i were you, i'd consider trading the D300s for the D7000 or D90 instead. In my experience D90 is still the most "photographer's" camera for the money paid. It actually has a more accurate AF than D7000 (nevermind K5) as well as sensor and flash-capabilities of D300/D300s. Very capable and balances (feature-wise) camera body. D7000 is great as well, though I, personally, prefer the output from D300s and D90.

Pentax K-01 vs Fuji X-Pro 1 vs Olympus OM-D

Sorry fellas, I had to pitch in...

Lets assume a scenario when one needs a camera+3 primes to go on a road trip around Europe.

K-01 + DA21 + FA31 + FA77 = 749$+509$+989$+784$=3031$ (REF. B&H USA)

VS

X-Pro1 + XF18 + XF35 + XF60 = 1699$+599$+599$+649$=3546$ (REF. B&H USA)

I'm one of these stupids who'd gladly pay extra 500$ for the system that looks timeless despite years of history, the system that is just plain sexy, the system that you're not ashamed to put on a table near you while enjoying a coffee somewhere on a terrace in [type a name of any old european city here]:

Ladies and gentlemen, on the other hand, if you want to look like a Fisher Price's dork in addition of saving 500$, K-01 is your best friend!!!:

That being said, one should not forget that these two are targeting very different audiences, Fuji is a niche-product for these who want Leica, but cant quite afford one. K-01 however is a mainstream piece of plastic... epic fail design-wise nonetheless. In times when the market is super-saturated with more than capable products, releasing a piece of Lego-Volvo that looks like there's ZERO years of history behind it, is pure nonsense! Despite the fact that it's compatible with the years of history...

Sorry for being so negative, I just don't get it!

Another "my di@k is STILL bigger" club? Grow up people... lift-up the blindfolds... take a look around...

all that fanboy-izm isn't funny anymore...

B.t.w. #3 seems to be solvable by enabling the Highlights Correction and taking a few shots with the flash... you can disable it afterwards.... worked for me...

Don't mean to send the thread south... but I'm getting tired if seeing birds of squirrels... would be nice to see some test shots with boobs for a change...

Nice shots otherwise... Is it the Sigma's 300/2.8?

I love these post from people who think they are the center of the universe... I'm one of these who does have a problem... my K5 is still in service with a stained sensor... 4-6 week turn-around time... As far as I'm concerned that's a fu$king big problem when you've cashed out over 1500$ for a brand new camera...

Oh no... not another one... are anti-fanboyism pills out yet?

As a long time Pentax user and fairly long time Nikon user I'm very open-minded about limitations of both systems... So all these fanboys comments about how Pentax K$ beats D300s in that and in that make me... well... laughing about retarded people isn't the nicest thing to do... so I don't laugh anymore...

When it comes to beating anything, the only thing Pentax really has to offer over the competition is its size... Pentax bodies and Pentax limited primes are the smallest offering on the market... that's the only reason why i bought back a Pentax system... for the rest.... sorry guys, but the rest is sh#t... dodgy flash work, non-existent QC.... despite what everybody want to believe, AF speed is still lagging behind big boys, not to mention that accuracy, even in day light is questionable...

K5 is certainly a huge step forward for Pentax... sensor performance is just awesome... it surely gives a 3-years old Nikon camera a hell of run for more money paid... I'm anxious to see what fanboys will have an erection about when D400 comes out... Yeah, I know.... there's always SR and WR to brag about... and if SR is useful.... sometimes... right when K5 tends to front-focus a lot... Can somebody tell me what WR is good for if best Pentax lenses (Limiteds) aren't WR'ed?

And I still can't figure out the mystery of dust getting behind the rear LCD despite the fact that the camera is so super-dupper weather-sealed...

K5's AF speed is actually quite ahead of K7... I'd even say in dim light it locks in faster than D90... It's comparable to D300s... BTW, comparable doesn't mean "the same"... it only means that now you can actually compare them, because anything before K7 was just "not funny"... Hell, even D70 focuses a lot faster than any Pentax camera before K7/K5...

Of course, the biggest trade-of of owning Nikon gear, is that it's huge... everything of quality grade is just freaking big! I loved the 17-55/2.8 on D300s IQ-wise, but I hated the lens it-self for being a fuc#ing brick... sold it very quickly for the same reason... Nevermind the 24-70 and all the newly released Nikon lenses... At some point I had to realize that IQ and "performance" are not the only things that count...

And I really don't thing that neither Canon or Nikon really gives a damn about K5.... especially with the whole first batch gone bananas with spotted sensors...
