While I see where you're comming from you really should consult a dictionary every now and then

Definition number 3 is actually quite common of manufactured items. I find it more plausible(though unlikely) that they were referring to definition 6
I also like the irony of definition 2 in relation to your example of a face.

Must be my bad.
I thought someone in the know had stressed that the hyphen was stressed. Or maybe they were talking about when typing it as opposed to the k2000 which also dropped the "d"

actually I think only the americans have the hyphen in that. The rest of the english speaking world either use K9 or Canine. Mater of fact the last time I saw that abreviation(k9 or k-9) was in a bad 80's movie. So I think it was just a bad americanism anyway. If you google it there are 5million K-9, 21million Canine(though I imagine that includes all the dental references) and 12million k9. In Australia we just call them dog units though i have seen canine patrol used.

They only use electronic shutter now. the clunk you hear on a dslr when it takes a picture is the mirror slap.

You do realize they have digital rangefinders don't you. Rangefinder camera - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia expensive little ****ers but true works of art. Respective to everything but the way it absorbs light, digital sensors work just like film

I have to disagree. I really like that shot. I do agree that this would be the perfect scene for a portrait though.

/facepalm
The point of using a particular length lens is the distortion and how much of the stuff around you you can get in the frame. By the same token we could use a 100mm imaginary lens and stand back 6ft but now all you have is the swing and a window behind it in frame. what's the point of a wide angle apart from all wide angle stuff you can fit in the frame.

Wait you don't use a tripod? you infidel.

also I don't get the argument about fall off,ect . IF you were using a 16-50 @ 16 on a FF to get the same as on a aps-c you'd zoom in to 25.6. Good bye fall off distortion and diffraction

Don't you have that backwards? on a FF that 50 1.4 would be equivalent to an 80mm on a APs-C.

wow /licks lips

if we extrapolate this argument then we will all be shooting on an camera phone. cause that'll be good enough. It's not IQ we want it's the DOF. Which is a fucntion of aperture and focal length.

Whilst this was taken with a MF it illustrates my point perfectly. There is about 2ft DOF. this was taken with a 50mm f/1.4. If you were to repeat this with an aps-c you'd only have the center 3rd in frame. So you'd walk back another 10 ft to get the rest of it and guess what the buildings in the bg are now twice* as focused and completely ruin the image. but wait you say. you could use a 100mm lens. and i say how many 100 f/1.4's do you know of.

They live in a world of compromises and settle for good enough. If they want the bg out of focus they move the actors further away from it. You should see movies that have been shot on the 5dmkii. they're stunning.

As in plural? I have this dream about being able to use a waistlevel viewfinder on a dslr.
Or is it just about a mundane EVF?

That's why we have ISO as a set-able function. Coincidentally, from what i've heard, FF offers better high ISO performance so you don't have to worry about cranking up the iso anymore.

And to the people saying "... but you can get the same DOF with a longer lens". Yeh, but it would be nice to not have to stand back 30ft. It would also be nice to be able to get our moneys worth out of our 50 f/1.2 and wide angle lenses.

Personally I'd love to go MF for the DOF advantages. but until they can make one with the advantages of a modern (pentax) DSLR (portable size, Good High ISO, under $10,000(preferably 6 at the most), weather resistant, buttons where you need them, ect) a pentax FF would be a good compromise. Especially since I don't have to buy a whole new set of lenses for it.

EDIT: before anyone points out that the 645d is only going to be $8,000, it still doesn't check off my other criteria. But it is a good start. maybe I'll get the MkII

Your not hearing the "shutter" your hearing the mirror slap. AFAIK all modern digital cameras use an electronic shutter that doesn't require "reseting" normally. Video modes so far leave the mirror up blocking the view finder, which is the reason manual focusing is impossible, unless you use the focus distance on the lens.

Will we see a Pentax NX?

....wait, here me out

Firstly the mysterious WB/AF assist looks suspiciously similar

and the second telling fact is that they haven't announced the lens mount of the nx. I've heard cannon mount thrown around but I can't believe that they'd short shift all of the GX20/200/10/100(7?) users who would want this as a second body. I think they've done this so pentax can still announce the pentax version as a surprise.(may 21?)

and by all accounts the NX is "due out in the second half of 2009."

I can imagine Hoya's new vision for pentax is a whole new line of cameras that aren't direct successors to the kxx(x)d lines. With the K-7 equivalent to k20d and the nx to the k200d.

and while I don't want to get anyones hopes up, samsung have been working on a full frame sensor. Wouldn't it be awesome if we had a FF body in six months time.

Lol, firstly Alloys do not have exactly the same properties of there parent materials. and second even if they were silly enough to make it out of pure magnesium (or an alloy that is mostly Mg) you'd still only have to worry about shooting in a burning building or being struck by lightning. or if your jetson-y enough to be shooting with fuel cell batteries you'd have to worry about them exploding.

K100D Power Problems

I had this problem too. the problem is with the battery contacts on the camera. overtime the build up a layer of corrosion that interferes with the camera getting the voltage it needs.

Use an eraser to get it off. You'll know that it worked/this is the problem if the contacts look significantly cleaner/shinier after you clean them

What does "weather-resistant" really mean?

The ones reporting corrosion were the ones in the rain covers. which is odd in itself, but corrosion can be caused by water, oxygen, uv light[effects plastics] and electricity.

My preliminary theory is that because they were kept in the rain covers they didn't receive the same warmth that the non covered ones would have got by their owners. Lower temperature decreases the resistance of the metal which would increase the current which caused the corrosion.

It would be interesting to hear how the other cameras that failed were treated to see if there is a correlation.

Or there could have been a contraction/expansion problem of the housing.

Any how can we stop using this extreme example as a case study. there are too many variables and it fall way outside of the recommended operating temperature. My interpretation of the original question and subsequent argument was how well does this thing do in the rain, mud and wind, which I took to mean the kind of environment I could get outside my door not on a 2000 mile trip to antarctica

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, I've been busy.

Maybe they mention it on their 5d promo site when it was first released.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II

Hmm, nothing in the section about body construction.

??? yes there is, See that part titled "Robust Construction" under the Effortless Operation section. If you click that link it takes you to the part that shows how they've sealed it

QuoteQuote:

[the]battery compartment, memory card slot, and [all of the]buttons.
Additional protection is provided by highly accurate alignment of seams on the magnesium-alloy chassis and rubber grips as well as precision construction of each dial’s axis

If sealing for "Resistance to dust and water" isn't weather sealing, what is it for? Sweat and skin cells? This argument is also moot since pentax doesn't claim that the k20d is "Weather sealed" either

You need to work on your English comprehension. Here's what I said with some helpful annotations for you

QuoteQuote:

I read some where once[unsourced anacdote] that the k20d could handle 100mm of rain in three minutes, which is ridiculous. But lets assume that was meant to be 10mm in three minutes(which is [coincidentally] the same as the 5dmkii).

. Like **** am I taking my unsealed k100d super out in torrential rain(2.5mm in three minutes). I worry about any rain on the ****er for fear that some water will seep around one of the buttons and render the electrical components useless.

You still harp on about quality control. Why? It's irrelevant to the argument.

Yes and you clearly ignore the line above it.

I wonder how cold it gets in Antarctica? This isn't a limitation of the sealing, it's a limitation of the electrical components. The k20d has the exact same limitation.

Thank you for finding the relevant section on the canon website for me. I had no inclination to do it myself. It will make it that much sweeter when you apologize to me.

I copy and pasted the frame size comparison from wikipedia onto a photo ogl uploaded to get an idea of the vignetting issue http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/95/SensorSizes.svg
here's what I got

It's not exactly scientific, and I'm not sure if we're supposed to be looking at the inside or outside of the line, but I don't see vignetting being much of an issue.

Also aren't all the DA*'s APS-H format already. Sure they're not cheap but they're relatively inexpensive compared to most quality lenses out there.

I'm sorry that I don't have the inclination to read through thousands of words OT I tend to skim through for the important bits. I then quote them, instead of using vague retoric, so you can see what I'm talking about. If I've missed something important how bout you quote it so i can see where I'm wrong.

I was looking for evidence[and found it] that the MKii had weather sealing. I'm not interested in buying the camera so I didn't read the whole review. What did I miss?

I don't see how a blog post on LL has more credibility than a proper review on DPR. LL says the mkii's aren't weather sealed, DPR says they are and even shows you where they are. Who should I believe?

Apart from an unsourced remark on LL you've provided me with no proof that I'm wrong. Prove me wrong and I'll admit it.

My logical flaws? You're the one who's confusing bad/little weather sealing with none at all. Not only that but 3/4ths of the 'non weather resistant' mkii's survived without a problem. explain that.

you also claim that 100mm in three minutes must be the right answer[because your precious camera must be better than canons]. Whilst if you'd read my post you'd be able to tell why that's ridiculous. ie that 100mm of rain in three minutes(=2000mm/hr) is 40x stronger than average extreme rain and 7x stronger than the world record of 300mm/hr. that's no longer rain resistant, that's now rain proof and waterfall resistant. my logical flaws?

I find your attitude ironic for someone recommending I apologize for mine. And apart from my remark about why would someone comment out of ignorance[which was an honest question not a snide remark], I find no hint of attitude in any of my post so far. I believe in your zealous quest to defend you favorite brand you see anyone who disagrees with you as having a bad attitude.

I look forward to your reply/apology

First let me get it out that I have no affiliation with canon, I don't even own one, I'm pentax through and through.

Wow you only read what you want don't you.

So you're using the death of two dry cameras to promote your idea that they can't take rain?! that's 2 out of the 6 that died didn't even get wet! They most likely died from the cold. It's reasonable to conclude that the other 4 died from the same reason. Especially since 20 more suffered through the same conditions without a problem.
Who says that the ones affected weren't defective. What lenses were they using? maybe that was where all the moisture got in

the other idiot let his camera take a swim in Dr Pepper. Did you forget the fact that we're discussing how well they handle rain not submersion. Did you forget the fact that water is not the same as a fizzy soft drink? The camera was in his bag, for all we know he only had a lens cap on.

So let me get this straight one dude drenched his camera in Dr pepper and a bunch of cameras died in the cold/were faulty. You ignore the other 20 that survived just fine. way to prove your point

if you search flickr for bokeh 95% of the stuff that comes up is the light source types.
