K-70 Video Test

Oh right I forgot to mention that. I used my HD 15mm f/4 Limited on the K-70 and carried it on the tripod under my arm. The camera is still within arms reach to hit the AF button and get the focus locked in.
The main reason I bought the K-70 was for the rotating screen for just such purposes.

Uhmm... get a sturdy tripod? ;) lol
I would use the same Muted profile again, I feel I can adjust in post production pretty good from there.
I was shooting 24p so I always tried to keep my shutter speed at 1/50th.
I plan on doing more video so I will pick up a bit more tips the more I use this camera. But thats all I have for now.
Thanks for watching Des!

These are the very first video clips I shot with the K-70 last month to test the look and quality.
It was shot in the Muted Profile with +1 sharpen in-camera, so nothing else was touched in post production.
Sort of a basic starting point from which I will adjust the settings next time.
Oh!! And please excuse the shaky tripod, the wind was quite nasty at times... and I was cold :(

1080 24p

I love the HD Pentax DA 20-40mm Limited more and more every day!

Here's one i shot with a Hoya ProND1000 filter set at 30mm. It was a 166 second exposure at f/16 ISO100
The detail in the tree trunks is just astounding!

Thanks very much!
I decided to stop trying to figure out how to fit my Lee filter system on this lens and just got the Hoya circular ND in both 10 stop and one at 6 stop. They work great! And very minimal colour shift, if any.

I agree also!

I had the money set aside for the K-1. Then I realized there's so much still going for the K-3II.... so I decided to get it and invest in some Limiteds. This 20-40mm is really changing the way I shoot... and for the better!
I WILL go Full frame some day.... just not yet.

I am now a proud new member to this club!
I just received the HD Pentax DA 20-40mm f/2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR this morning and went out to take some snap shots hand-held.
It seems that this will be a great lens for my workflow and in Lightroom for Black and Whites, and a perfect focal length to replace my DA16-45, when combined with my HD-DA15mm LTD
These are processed in LR so I could get a feel for what I am working with:

40mm 1/20sec f/11 ISO100

31mm 1/40sec f/11 ISO100

A bit of a dreary day for these types of shots but what the heck:

20mm 1/25sec f/11 ISO100

And one more in colour...

33mm 1/30sec f/11 ISO100

More shooting tomorrow! I really love everything about this lens so far. It's a work of beauty!

Which one do I choose?

Thanks!
The first one was straight into photoshop where I did just basic dodge/burn/levels.
The second one I tried doing a light HDR in Photomatix from 3 versions of the RAW file.
The last one retained the HDR grass portions and the sky and water were just from the RAW file burned/dodged a little. *phew*
I dont usually do that much on a photo! But I really liked this one shot and was having a tough time making it into a BW the way I saw it in my head!
Thanks all for the tips!

Oh yes! But I have managed to overcome that problem (at least minimize it)
I have created a profile for my printer and paper for doing BW's. I've been using the new Bamboo paper from Hahnemuhle in my R1800 printer. I used the Printfix Plus 2.1 from Colorvision....took a while to tweak it in tone and density but now I can feel confident sending anything to printer without adjusting it for the printer in PS

I have worked this image in BW twice now as I am using it in a submission.
But I cant decide which one is more eye catching!! I've been staring at it for too long now and I'm become hazy LOL
Opinions? Which version do you think conveys better?

Will Pentax go Pro?

Ok I'll chime in too!
This is a complete guess here... but photojournalists work for media outlets that have photographic departments which invest in cameras and lens collections, and I THINK alot of the staff photographers have this equipment at their disposal. I wonder how many of the photojournalists actually own all that equipment?? I dunno... like i said, just guessing.
But going with that thought (if its true) then Pentax would need to convince media outlets to invest in a new stock of lens for their photographers to have at their disposal.
It wouldn't make sense for pro STAFF photographers (pro freelancers is a different story) to buy a pro Pentax model when they have access to "renting" or "borrowing" expensive lenses from the media outlet in Canon and Nikon glass.
I know N Geographic for one has a huge collection of Canon and Nikon glass for its photographers to use... some lenses most individuals would not usually buy on there own.
Pro Pentax would need to cut a deal with photo departments in media to make sure its worthwhile for their staffers to buy a new pro Pentax body by having a collection lenses to borrow on assignments.
Again.... I'm just thinking off the cuff here... "pro" can tend to be a fluidic term.

You on Mac or Windows?
I tried Safari, IE, and Netscape on a Windows XP today and NONE of them showed any difference. Which is good.
But on Mac I tried Safari (color managed) and my Firefox is not color managed yet (need to do that soon).... Safari shows the tagged photo EXACTLY as all the Windows browsers were showing but the non-tagged one looked dull, light, and desaturated. (tried it on a second Mac machine too, same thing.... and so far most Mac users have said the same)
It seems Safari on Mac is up to something with untagged photos. I contacted a Mac programmer, he's gonna look into it and get back to me.

Yes, but I tried that too and they still appear different...
EDIT!!!
Yes they DO look the same as each other.. sorry
So Safari DOES indeed default to the monitor color profile!
BUT.... I cant use sRGB as my monitor profile because its making things look blue... I use my calibrated profile from the Spyder for the monitor. I need it exact for doing BW prints with warm toning and srgb is wacked for use as a monitor colorspace

Thanks Maxwell!
I posted these at a few places and got a few Mac friends to look at them... so far X Man is the only Mac user who sees no difference.... and ALL Windows users see no difference at all.
I'll keep testing!
Looks like a mac thing....

X Man.... i just checked the photos I posted on ANOTHER Mac and there is still a difference between them.
So, Windows displays no difference in the 2 photos I posted, but so far both Macs I tried show a difference in them.
Any other Mac users wanna try? I should go post this on the Apple forums shouldnt i
I'll do that

well.... now I am starting to think it is the Spyder software... the profile for the monitor doesnt show in Colorsync app ... it shows the factory Color LCD ... so maybe Spyder is by-passing my Colorsync for system displaying.... working on it.... testing some options

More research for Mac users.... Firefox is pish... unless you turn on that ICC control by downloading the plug-in.
For Windows there's no problem as it displays sRGB colour all the time in all browsers, Safari on Windows will honor the tagged photo profile, but when there's no profile Safari (Windows) will default to sRGB rendering... OSX Safari defaults to the Monitor colour space with untagged photos.
I'm doing side-by-side tests here on a Mac and Windows... learning tons!
All I can say is please tag yer photos Windows users! OSX Safari users need it!
If anything its OSX that needs fixed with colour in the browsers... Safari renders colours great and consistent on Windows! Why not on OSX????
