Luminare Neo - what say you?

I have Luminar Neo, as well as On1 Photo Raw and DXO Photolab.
I find Luminar the easiest one to use, it's fun too. Yes, it works well with jpgs as well as Raws.
Downsides.. they keep trying to up sell it with optional addons and "extensions", some of which are good, and others just average.
I find On1 and DXO are better for noise removal and sharpening.
You could get their free trial and see if you like it.

There's new software called On1 Resize AI that's getting excellent reviews.
I've tried it with old images from my K200D and got great results.

I use DXO Photolab 4.
I'm astonished how using DXO to develop raw files from my very old 10Mp Pentax K200D produces images far better than I've ever seen them before.
This is just with whatever it does automatically, before I even adjust any settings. Quite remarkable.

Artifical Intelligence adds keywords automatically

Sorry the link didn't work. You can just Google excire. com anyway.
Not sure if added keywords/tags remain after the trial. I liked it so much that I bought it, so I don't know what happens after the trial.
The AI is quite remarkable. It can differentiate between people of different ages, so for example you could search your photos for pictures of kids and it won't include adults. Or, you can search for elderly people and it won't include younger folk. You can also specify the number of people in the photo you're searching for .. 1, 2 or 3 or more.
Its good with animals too .. it can identify and keyword various animals it finds in your photos such as dog, bear, bird, reptile etc.. It even recognizes some different breeds of dogs and different species of birds (eg. seagull)
Fun, and potentially VERY useful.

I'm trying out Excire Foto software.

Manage, find and share your photos | Excire

It uses AI to scan your photos and automatically adds keywords/tags based on what it finds in each photo.
Its surprisingly accurate. I find it adds better keywords than I do myself manually!

After its added the keywords you can use it as a photo management app and search for photos based on the tags or other metadata.

With a few extra steps (not explained entirely well in the user manual) the keywords that Excire adds can be used for searches in other photo editing programs. I've tried it successfully in DXO Photo Lab 4 and in On1 Photo Raw 2022.

There is also another version called Excire Search which is basically the same but works as a plugin for Lightroom.

Sticky: Manual solenoid replacement Pentax K30 / Discharge flash-condenser / Solenoid choice

I just successfully completed the repair of my K-50 with aperture block failure.
I bought an old Pentax istDs from a pawn shop for $30 and removed the 2 white Japanese solenoids from it. To repair the K-50 I used the solenoid that opened the flash from the istDs. I considered it would have had less use than the other (aperture one).
My K-50 had been sitting in a cupboard for over 2 years since it stopped working. I bought a Sony mirrorless camera (A6400) to replace it but I never really liked the Sony. It takes great pictures and the autofocus is amazingly fast and accurate, but the camera just doesn't feel right in my hands and the menus are terrible.
So good to have my K-50 working again.
Thanks to all those who posted instructions and pictures here to help others carry out this repair. They are very much appreciated.

I have a K50 with the aperture block failure.
I just bought an old istD S to get the solenoid from to put in my k50.
Somewhere on Pentaxforums I think I remember seeing a post from a guy explaining how to do this and he had included pictures of a k50 from all sides that you could print out and use to poke the removed screws in so you didn't lose where they went.
I can't find these pictures now. I did find the ones of a K30.
Can anyone point me to where the k50 pictures are so I can print them? Thank you.

DXO Photo Lab 4

During my quest to find an alternative to Lightroom, I recently tried DXO Photo Lab 4.

So far I love it and I think its the closest to what I was hoping to find.

I think that its sharpening and noise removal is superior to Lightroom.
It has profiles that download for every camera and lens that I use, including my very old K200D.

Best of all, it has a search by keyword function that can find photos using all my old keywords that I added in Lightroom.

Anyone else tried it?

K5 still worth buying?

I have some Pentax lenses left over from when my K50 died. I'm interested in buying a used body so I can still use them.
I have the opportunity to buy a K5 with 25,000 clicks for about $300 US.
Is the K5 still relevant? I think it's about 8 years old? Or would I be better saving more for a newer model?

Cancel Lightroom Sub but still use Library with Luminar?

I'm thinking of cancelling my Adobe Lightroom subscription because I'm enjoying using Luminar 4 for PP and I want to save some money.

I read that if you cancel your Lightroom sub, the Library module still works. So, I wondered about using Lightroom just for the Library/cataloguing function and using Luminar as a Lightroom plugin for editing.

That combination appeals to me. Has anyone else tried this successfully?

Lens choice for K-50 astrophotography

I only tried night sky astro photography a few times with my K-50.

The lens I used was a Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 EX DC
I got the best results with the lens at 10mm, using ISO 1600 and f4 and 30 seconds exposure.
My Milky Way shots with this set up were pretty good for a beginner like me!
I'll try to attach one of my shots taken with the above setup and settings ...

Pentax lenses on Sony Alpha cameras

I just bought a Sony A6400 mirrorless camera to supplement my Pentax K50.
I have various Pentax K mount lenses and wondered about using them on the new Sony as well.
I believe there is an adapter that enables this?
Has anyone else experienced using their Pentax lenses on a Sony Alpha 6000 series camera?
I would be interested to hear which adapter you bought and what functionality the Pentax lens had on the Sony body.
Thanks

John

I'm a long time Lightroom/Photoshop user. Getting tired of the subscription model and have been looking at alternatives.
So far Luminar 3 is my favorite.
Its a one time purchase, not expensive, easy to learn and gets great results. It also does layers, so it can replace some of the things I had to use Photoshop for.

I'm finding the new Luminar 3 very slow to boot up and very slow to do just about anything (compared to the previous version)

Also .. I can't find a "Settings" or "Preferences" button or menu anywhere. Am I missing something?

The Best Photo Editing Software

Its surprising that this article doesn't mention Luminar, which to my mind is currently the best alternative to Lightroom.
Luminar can do layers, which gives it some Photoshop like abilities as well as its Lightroom similarities.
Luminar is a once only purchase and that's a plus for those of us looking to shrug off the subscription software models.
The new version, Luminar 3, comes out in a few days and will now include a digital asset management cataloguing module.

Hi, I live in the South Island of New Zealand.
I suggest you include the Moeraki Boulders beach near Oamaru, some of the beaches in the Catlins area south of Dunedin and the beaches in Able Tasman National Park.
For a non beach location, don't miss the spectacular rock formations at Castle Hill, about 100 km west of Christchurch.

A question about bracketing...

Is the question here whether a three shot bracket from the camera can create a better HD image than taking just one raw shot and creating the other two "bracketed" shots in Lightroom?
