Lens Wraps

Overkill for what purpose?

When I carry my photobag I've no need for a wrap. When I carry using one of my backpacks, which are all made of thin dyneema and silnylon and offers no protection, I use a wrap. If I was consistently mindful and never allowed my backpack to be put down too hard or bump into objects, then I probably could do without any protection. And I am pretty careful with my backpacks as they aren't the most durable anyway. However, the added bulk and weight of the wrap being so small, and the additional protection and peace of mind being important to me, means I'll use one whenever I use my backpacks.

In a pinch, when I've forgotten a wrap, I've used my beanie.

If it's just for two lenses you might like a double mount rear lens cap, which allows you to mount two lenses together.

OP/TECH USA Lens Mount Cap

I've used two lens wraps. One is theOpTech Soft wrap, which I've found to just be too...soft for my liking. The other is a Canon lens wrap, which is the only one I really use. I like it more than the OpTech as it has a much more rugged feel and makes me feel more confident in the level of protection.

Does this hood fit FA31?

Yes, it's designed as an adapter for the Panny cameras to allow the use of 58mm filters.

Yes, it can fit the original lens cap, but you might prefer to do as K100d mentioned and use a regular lens cap and save the original. I use a 58mm-49mm step down ring to allow the use of my 49mm accessories, lens cap included.

This Janco FZ18 58mm Adapter is the one I use.

I got the same off Amazon. I also use a 58-49mm step down wring so I can use my 49mm filters and lens caps.

Scott Kelby's Digital Photography Boxed Set, Parts 1, 2, 3, and 4 is currently on sale at the Google Play store for $14.40. Looking around it appears this usually runs about $50-60 for digital or paper copies.

I usually use Reseller Ratings for feedback and they seem to have a very low rating: 3.18/10.

However, I purchased a tripod from them a couple years ago without issue. It was the cheapest price I could find, shipped quickly, and arrived undamaged.

FA31 + 49mm filter

The Janco 58MM hood I posted earlier is the Panny hood. It goes on Panny cameras so they can accept 58mm filters.

You can get empty filter rings here:

Camera Filters - Empty Rings : Camera Filters

They have an inner ring to secure your own filter glass. I just discard this ring and use them as spacers.

Oh, and I've ordered from them multiple times without issue. They also ship quick.

If not the actual f-stop then what?

The f-stop is mathematically calculated and should, therefore, always be given precisely. The quality of the image at any given aperture is subjective and, as such, should be left to the opinion of an informed buyer.

The Retro series from ThinkTank is pretty nice.

http://www.thinktankphoto.com/categories/shoulder-bags/retrospective.aspx]ThinkTank Retro

I've got the 5. It's pretty small, but has a capacity slightly larger than the stuff you listed I believe. ]

I also had and really liked my Tamrac - Model 5767 Velocity 7x until the velcro dividers frayed.

It does unscrew. However, others have said the hood is on pretty tight. Just make sure you're turning it in the right direction - righty tighty, lefty loosey.

Glad you liked the lens cap idea. :)

The FA43mm filter screws off just like the filter. Screw the hood off, screw on the filter, and then screw the hood to the filter, assuming, as it likely does, that the filter has female threads.

First, be sure you're not attaching the filter to the hood, but to the threads on the front of the lens. On the FA77 retract the built-in hood, then thread the filter on. On the FA43 you have to remove the hood and then attach the filter.

Oh, and if for some reason you can't help but touch the filter's glass, then just put a 49mm cap on the filter when you put it on the camera. ;)

The FA31mm takes a 58mm filter, while the FA77 and FA43 use a smaller 49mm filter. So, you'll have to either buy a 49mm filter or a 49-58mm step-up ring. However, the step-up ring will interfere with the hoods of the lenses.

Poll: How many camera bags / packs do you own?

1. Spotmatic case handed down from my father.
2. Tamrac Velocity
3. ThinkTank retro 5

Those are the only "camera bags" I have. However, I do carry my camera and equipment in other non-camera specific bags as the need dictates.

I prefer using things like lens wraps and the Pentax DA lens case. It's not as bulky as a padded insert (I've got a Mountainsmith) and it's very configurable.

todd - I'd make a few other suggestions.

These are a ways east off I5 but notable:
Lassen Volcanic Park - this place is hot
Burney Falls - holy cow waterfall
A bit closer to I5:
McCloud River and Falls - very nice series of water falling
Right on I5:
Mossbrae Falls - very cool falls and...trains! ;)

Hogwash! It just takes some planning. ;)

I like having multiple bags for different purposes, but I basically use two different kinds. I have a dedicated camera shoulder bag (Thinktank retro 5). I use this bag for short shooting when I won't have to carry anything but camera gear and only for short periods. When I go hiking or if I need extra storage for kid/baby stuff then I switch to one of my backpacks. I've never had a camera backpack. Instead I go the other route and have various backpacking/daypacks I use for these purposes. To protect my gear I simply use whatever lens wraps, pouches, or dividers I might need for the gear I decide to take and then organize it in the bag.

With my Km I mostly used Energizer Lithium Ultimates. IIRC I had to change batteries maybe every 4-6 months depending on use. They're also extremely light. I just weighed them and they're 0.6 oz compared to 1.0 oz for my Eneloop. I did use Eneloops for a while with the Km and would get maybe 2-4 months use out of them I think. As for the what are the best "hands down", you'll have to pour through the pages and pages of threads and then flip a coin to figure that one out. ;)

Seriously, I gave up reading about which rechargeable was best since I've found the Eneloops to be more than adequate for my needs.

Disclaimer - I've never actually logged the time or anything. The numbers above are just rough estimates of my experience.

And no, not going to Reno for the ballons, but it looks like a really cool event.

Actually, I grew up living in Utah and Colorado. I've been living here (Yuba City) about as long as you. Oh, and I can't imagine living in the Bay Area either, but that's only because I can't stand the city. :p I'd take a lonely place up on the north coast though, or maybe one high up in the Sierra. :D

Good luck at the zoo! Hopefully the batteries have enough to last you. Of course, you can always pick up some Energizer lithiums. I love having that option.

I wonder how this is enforced. Even if no one brought a "camera", I bet many people had a phone with a built-in camera.

And lousy weather? That's the good weather. I'll take that over any days the delta breeze goes away and temperatures are 80 in the a.m. and over 100 in day. Warm summer nights are lousy in N. California. ;)
