Wrong. The KP was obviously meant to be the top of the line APS-C camera, to be sold alongside the full-frame K-1. It was only the outrage from the Pentax faithful that forced Ricoh to make some bumbling statement about that not being the case.
How long has it been since the KP was introduced? We still don't have another APS-C camera from Pentax. That'll come later this year. The truth is, Pentax only started from scratch on an APS-C flagship after Pentaxians said they weren't satisfied with the KP.
I'm sorry... I don't mean to flame anyone. But if you think otherwise, you weren't paying attention.

This is quite true. But, just to throw my two-cents worth in, Ricoh said nothing about the KP not being an APS-C flagship when it was introduced. It was only when the Pentax faithful began complaining loudly about the KP that Ricoh rushed out a statement to that effect. And, given that it has taken this long for that flagship to appear, it's perfectly clear that Ricoh had nothing in the works at the time. They had planned to give us the K1 and KP.

Yes, I'm aware of all of that. Of course one can shoot sports with a Pentax. But I've had to compensate for the brand's shortcomings in this area for some 15 years. Pentax cameras offer many strengths. But autofocus - despite steadily improving - is still not competitive.

I'm not too fussy. I just hope the autofocus will be truly competitive and the battery life will be 2-3 times that of the KP.

I think you're onto something.
A few observations from a long-time Pentaxian:
1) First, as others have said, this is not a bad strategy. Carve out a niche with DSLRs, as Leica has done with rangefinders. It may be the only way a small player can survive. But will the price of Pentax DSLRs eventually mirror that of cameras from the red-dot brand?
2) I'm willing to bet another reason Pentax is doing this is because it lacks the R&D budget to develop a competitive mirrorless system of its own. Frankly, I have always suspected that Leica was in a similar spot when it decided to pursue the luxury market. It simply couldn't compete against the mass-market camera companies from Asia. So it didn't. Harley-Davidson is another example, although I think time has run out for H-D.
3) I realize the line about feeling the optical-viewfinder image in your heart in the Pentax manifesto is pure marketing. But how many photographers that we know - both in person and online - have told you they have problems with EVFs? It's a real thing for many people. Personally, I can go back and forth between OVF and EVF with no problem.
4). Assuming this strategy works, who among us would have predicted a couple of years ago that Pentax would be around longer than Olympus?

I'm sure what you say is true - because most of the technology is available off the shelf these days. Almost every new Pentax camera is "the best Pentax camera" and an improvement on its predecessors. The question is, how will it measure up to the competition?

What small viewfinder? You need to take a look at some of the modern mirrorless cameras. They work just fine. The Panasonic G9's EVF has 3.6 million dots and is huge - bigger than the OVF in any of my Pentaxes. What you wrote may have been true five years ago - but not anymore.

I have the DA 20-40mm Limited and enjoy it very much. I think it's a must for the KP. But if the OP is going to spend much time in inner cities on his vacation, I don't think 20mm (30mm full-frame equivalent) will be nearly wide enough. So I'm with those who think the the DA 15mm Limited is a better choice.
Another lens that hasn't been mentioned is the Tamron 10-24mm, which is still available in K mount. But maybe the best deal of all is the Sigma 10-20mm, which has an f/3.5 constant aperture and costs even less than the Tamron. At B&H here in the U.S., it's available for $399 brand new.

Yup. And the rumor is Apple may be leaving Intel behind in terms of its desktops and laptops in a year or two. Already the company uses its own processors for its iOS mobile products - all of the iPhones, iPads, etc. So the move would make sense. I imagine Mac OS will become much more like iOS - or merge with it completely - before too long. It's already moving in that direction. My 2011 iMac is still working fine but can't use the latest Mac OS. I'm not sure whether I should wait for the new processors.

No, the Ricoh and the Fuji have the same field of view. Both lenses are 18mm actual and 28mm effective in full-frame terms (both cameras being APS-C). And both cameras have 35mm and 50mm (effective) crop modes - which are better options now with 24mp sensors.

I still have my GR from 2013 and still enjoy it. I'll be keeping a close eye on the serious reviews of the GR III - particularly when it comes to autofocus performance (I'm not talking about snap focus). Ricoh is promising improvements. I hope they're what many of us want. Otherwise, since I wouldn't be shooting much, if any, video with a camera like this, my money might be better spent on a Fuji XF10. $399-$449 with a 24mp Bayer sensor, better battery life and splits the difference between the GR and GR III when it comes to size and weight.

Well, I caught this deal just before midnight. At $699, I'm happy to pair the KP with my DA 20-40mm zoom and my DA Limited primes. At $899 or anything near that, I'd just wait. But who knows when we'll actually see the new APS-C flagship - if ever? This is the best way I know to support the Pentax brand short of buying a K-1, which is just not in the cards due to cost and the need for full-frame glass. Thanks for all of the feedback and advice everyone!

I haven't posted on these forums in a while. I have both a K-3 and a K-5 II -- neither of which has gotten a lot of use lately. But I've been feeling bad about my collection of DA Limited glass that has been sitting idle. I have the full collection of DA Limiteds and my shooting is very varied - everything from portraits to landscapes to architecture to sports (usually auto racing).
The short version of my question is, would a KP be better with my Limiteds than the cameras that I already have? The only other lens that I envision using on the KP would be my 20-40 Limited zoom.
Early reviews of the KP turned me off but more-recent real-world user reviews make it quite attractive. People talk about how small it is, but the dimensions are within a tenth of an inch of the K-3 in virtually every direction. It is lighter than the K-3. But noticeably so in the field?
My other option would be to use the cameras that I have and sell them off when the elusive Pentax APS-C flagship is released - assuming that ever happens. I'm not interested in the K-1 because it's a lot more money and I'd have to buy too much new glass to take full advantage of what it has to offer.
I've missed the Black Friday sales that offered the KP for under $700 but those prices will no doubt return in the months ahead.

Wow. This thread really has really gone off the rails. Still, I'm happy that my fellow Pentaxians have these new lenses to look forward to (and squabble over). I'm sure they'll be solid pieces. But, for me, it all comes too late. When I could afford premium glass, nothing much was coming from Pentax - under either the Hoya or Ricoh umbrellas. Now, new product is beginning to show up (but not nearly fast enough). And I can't afford it anymore.
Moreover (and slightly off-topic) while the newest cameras are the best digital Pentaxes ever, they're still not truly competitive when it comes to autofocus and video. I doubt there's reason to believe the next APS-C flagship will be, either - but I'd love to be proven wrong. Personally, after decades of shooting Pentax, I'm at a critical decision point. I'll wait until the K-3II replacement comes out to make it.
In the meantime, I hope the new glass turns out to be everything Pentaxians hope it will be.

The Casio EX-100... basically an Olympus Stylus 1 without the viewfinder. That's a good thing although I prefer having the EVF. I miss my Stylus 1... a lot.

Well, the decision was made. I took the 12.9-inch iPad Pro back to Best Buy and exchanged it for a 10.5-inch version. My wife gets my iPad Air 2. I think I may have indeed been onto something in terms of the larger screen being better for reading small print and editing photos.
But I don't think I was going to use either for photo editing (at least not consistently) or as a laptop replacement - another thing the 12.9-inch version would be great for (with more storage than I had).
I'm going to use it as an iPad and for that the 10.5-inch version is much better - at least for me. Even a friend of mine who is built like an NFL linebacker had the 12.9 and swapped it for the 10.5. If he thinks it's too big for general tablet use then there's got to be something to it.

My wife's iPad (actually my original iPad 2) is dying. I've been running an iPad Air 2 since 2015. Best Buy had the new 64gb iPad Pro 12.9-inch model on sale at a $100 discount. So I picked one up for her. I was a bit concerned about the weight, given she has some arthritis. But the weight wasn't a problem. The size was. She feels it's much to big for her. Okay, fine.
I offered to exchange it for either a 10.5-inch iPad Pro or even a base 9.7-inch iPad. She says my current iPad Air 2 (which works fine) would be enough and that I should either keep the 12.9-inch iPad or exchange it for what I want.
So my question is, is anyone here using the 12.9-inch iPad? Any thoughts? How does the size work out in real life?
I currently do all of my photo and digital editing on the my 2012 iMac (which, surprisingly, works fine after five years - thank the i7 chip and 8gb of RAM). The word is that the iPad Pro is now as powerful as Apple's MacBook Pro laptops and that photo editing is now much more feasible, especially with the larger screen real estate.
Of course, that would probably mean swapping the 64gb model for at least the 256gb model. It's funny, my iMac has a full terrabyte of storage. But, even with 10-thousand photos and 8-thousand songs in my iTunes library, I have used up only about 190gb on the hard drive.
I like the idea of a 12.9-inch screen on an iPad... but I can still do my editing on my iMac. Perhaps I should swap out the larger iPad Pro for the 10.5-inch model with more storage - just to have a better iPad - and leave it at that.
Or I could max out an iPad Pro with the 12.9-inch screen for the inevitable day when the iMac goes. Specing a new iMac an i7 chip, 16gb of ram and either a fusion drive or SSD ain't cheap these days. I can't do it for amywhere near the price I did in 2012.
Any input is welcome.

Like almost everyone else, I told them they need to get serious about producing truly competitive autofocus and quality video. I also told them that the mirrorless revolution is passing them by. I wrapped up by telling them that while I still have a soft spot in my heart for Pentax, I find myself using my Pentax gear less and less often because there are more relevent alternatives for me.
