K5 Dial jumps the shutter speed, opinion on repair?

I am sending a lens in to get repaired, but I also have an issue with my K5, it jumps shutter speed when Im changing it with the dial. It doesn't always do it but it does it often enough that I cant really use it in manual mode. I tried cleaning it which worked temporarily. Any suggestions? Should I send it in or repair locally?

No way, no liveview ever, but I do shoot a lot of photos in a short period of time. Weddings arent as heavy on it as the dance stuff is, maybe Im not used to it but it still seems like the k20 was far better on battery life. Im just afraid my camera is glitchy in general!

I usually stick to just using the pentax battery but it dies within 4 hours so I need to use the off brands sometimes

I use Sandisk and Lexar cards, I wouldn't shoot with a crappy card and they are ALL class 6 or above. and no there was an actual PIECE missing off the corner of the card.

Maybe I just have really bad luck, weird things have been happening to me lately!

MAJOR issues with my K5!!

Okay now I bought my K5 used from someone, but it was NOT abused, dropped or anything, couldnt even really tell it was used. i believe it had 12k shots on it when I bought it. I had no real issues with it at first but Ive been using it pretty heavily now and now the problems are starting....

Ive read others have had this issue but the battery life on it is TERRIBLE. I have 2 off brand batteries (I realize thats part of the issue) and 1 offical. not only that but it FREEZES when it dies and its only about 1/4 away from being "dead" it seems the offical battery is a LITTLE better at indicating when its dying and it doesnt freeze up.

The next problem is what worries me. I was trying to change my mem card and it was STUCK... I was staying calm and it FINALLY comes out and one of the little plastic strips where the cards read was BROKEN. it was DANGLING. I took it off and was jsut so upset... BUT the card is about 2 years old so I was like okay.... no idea how this would wear out like that but OKAY, first time for everything. Today I was trying to use my BEST card (SD extreme 8gb) on my K20 and it wasnt reading... I last used it in my K5 so I take it out to see if maybe the card is dirty. THERE IS A SMALL CORNER MISSING FROM IT. How does this happen??? the K5 read it perfectly. This had to have happened cuz of the K5!!! ALSO, the write speed is SO SLOW. Im thinking I may have to upgrade cards at this point lol but I think my highest class card is an 8, I suppose the K5 with the 2 extra mega pixels is just writing slower... and YES I did the firmware update!

Has anyone else had this problem or is this just a freak conicidense??

Ive been having a problem with freezing. Thankfully it never happened at a wedding!!! But during other shooting it just suddenly froze and I had to take off the grip and remove the battery, VERY annoying. I think it may be the batteries though. I bought my camera 2nd hand and he gave me a bunch of extra stuff including 3 batteries! I think one of them is an off brand so I think I will try numbering my batteries and seeing if it happens again and with which battery.

I also think it may be from putting it on auto switch from battery to grip because the camera flickered when I took the grip off... could also maybe be the grip?? I just hope it never happens at a crucial moment! Yesterday i actually got a battery depleted message so I think THAT battery is the pentax brand

Selling Guest Portraits At A Wedding...?

you are much better off just offering a photobooth along with your packages or having it as an ad on... this way your costs are already figured out for the size of the wedding and you charge accordingly. This would be a greater cost to the couple, it'd be too hard and maybe even a bit cheesy to charge people for the prints...

From thurs till Sat from 12-7pm EST they have the workshop LIVE which is free. DEFINITELY check it out if you haven't, is anyone else going to watch?? I had a lot of questions regarding how things work from nikon to pentax... if anyone wants to watch with me and maybe we can talk about it all with each other!

I should have had a contract between her and I and they should have also had a contract! I let my emotions get away since her and I WERE longtime friends. I never thought she would turn on me like this... amazing how no matter how old you are, how long you know someone, you can't trust anyone!

On another note, darker skinned people are very hard to photograph, I still have not learned how to get rid of the shine, I bounced the flash in 85% of the photos. It was a hot day and they were sweating (lol as were we....) Is there any way to avoid that? I am always open to learning new things, clearly since I learned a hard lesson from this wedding!

Infact I have NEVER ever had anyone complain about the quality of my photos before this. Even back when i was shooting as a total amateur. These guys are complaining 2 months after the fact and it has really killed my confidence... i wonder if every client hates their photos and is just too polite to say something!

They seem like the type to sue because they are complaining 2 months later after the fact and they tipped us.Then again with my collegue riling them up maybe they arent the type at all but are just so upset by the awful prints. OH and my collegues pricing was $850.... I charge $1200 for a similar package

here are a few shots that i think covers what we did as a whole:

This is a very long story so I am going to keep it short....

an OLD collegue of mine I used to work for booked a wedding (no contract though, they never got to that point) asked me to fill in for her, BUT she says that she MUST give them 200 4x6s in a black album from walmart (ugh...don't get me started on her unprofessionalism). Fine, met up with them, they signed my contract and I write in there about the prints that will be made by my colleuge and shes responsible for them.

Wedding day goes alright, they were late and it made things a bit hectic, the dance floor was very crowded, the guests were very unruly so we didnt take MANY photos in there since my camera was nearly knocked out of my hand a few times and the music was so loud people were barely in there. we got the main dances, funky chicken and all that jazz.... we decided to set up an area in the lobby area to take photos and annouce that we will be taking photos there for the remainer of the day so if anyone wants photos taken they must go there. Photos were much better, nicely posed by my assistant ECT. We ended up staying longer but did not charge them since it was only 15 minutes and they tipped us.

Cool, I drop off the DVD at their house and let them know that my collegue will take care of the album and prints... it takes her over a month to finally get it to them. Meanwhile I am assuming everyhings fine, the couple has ALL the images. My colleuge told me a few photos were dark, sent them to me, I agreed, she said shed fix them. She never did and now the clients are flipping out because of these promises SHE made. They refused to talk to me at first and my colleuge as I find out has been bad mouthing me, basically pushing them to this point that they want to sue or want compensation.

Now we never got a checklist from the clients and it states WITHOUT a checklist we cant be responsible for missed photos. We got all of the important stuff such as cake cutting, kiss, walking down the isle, ect. The photos are perfectly fine, a few are dark which I obviously will fix for them but they are complaining we didnt get photos of every guest, we got no photos of her young child (there are group shots of her but no individuals she cried or slept the entire wedding, were lucky we got anything) I dont know why they are suddenly so upset and irate at us (I had an assisant with me)

its unfortunate it has to escalate to this point due to my unprofessional collegue.... do you think they have any grounds to sue?

I am of course going to try my best to work it out but besides giving them new prints I dont think they are entitled to anything. They seem like the type that will leave a bad review and sue no matter what, give em an inch they take a mile! I'd appreciate ANY insight!

OMG! Thats horrible... I'd be SO angry, Ive heard of it happening to ppl before. I always, obsessively keep my camera locked in the trunk of my car if im out and my alarm is always armed. I'm also from jersey and I keep an eye on craigslist for pentax deals so i will let you know if i see it, criminals are usually very dumb. hopefully the dumbass didnt keep it for themselves cuz theyd prolly have no diea how to use it.

Oh yes I did try taking it with the SR on and off. But I'll try it without a lens to see if something is stuck inside or lose.

The images obviously don't come out when on long exposure, they come out with camera shake because of the clicking/vibrating. But on a shutter speed above 2 seconds, the image quality and everything else seems to be working normally.

I checked the shutter actuations on it (I thought it was higher) and its only at 23k

I turned the SR on and off MANY times... and no its not the same noise... its more like a clicking. I've never had to clean the sensor (like open it up and actually clean it) not at least on this camera but I don't remember that noise being similar to this...

I've had my pentax k100D super since 2008, bought it brand new. Today I was trying to do some long exposures and the camera was rhymically ticking/vibrating about every second. I changed the lenses, turned it on and off, switched from manual to auto focus, turned shake reduction on and off... nothing. I actually ended up accidently banging it AFTER it was doing this and it got slightly better. As far as I know the camera hasn't been dropped, theres no damage to it besides very small cosmetic things.

I am TOTALLY baffled. It doesn't do it at all during short exposures. I probably wont fix it since its such an old camera and its still a good extra extra backup to have at a wedding since I wouldnt be doing long exposures at one anyways :)

You can keep your weddings

I agree that you 100% have to use the best equipment possible and know it inside and out. And of course RAW won't fix everything, I would hope if someone was going to shoot a wedding they would know that but, I should know better than to say that in the digital age. :p

I was very young, 19 when I started in the photography business. I was working at a portrait studio and I had just come into work when my boss was helping a woman who was in a terrible car accident, pretty much her entire body was in a cast. Nearly everyone in her family died. She wanted reprints of photos from a huge family portrait we had shot a few months earlier. (thank god we had them, I think we only kept them on file for 6 months) I didn't shoot it, sell it and this was my first time seeing it. Sadly the images looked like they did not come out that well. They had to do a lot of creative cropping (120 film days) and since it was a group shot of about 20 people there was a lot of shots with different people blinking or kids not cooperating.

That has always stuck with me, that any job like that, especially a wedding or large family portrait is pricelessly important. This is also why I only shoot small weddings and people know what they are getting. They won't be getting high fashion modeling bridal party shots, and a lot of people do not want that. They just want a good photo. Properly exposed, cropped and people posed nicely. It is also a lot less pressure when its a small wedding and I have less people to take photos of, more time (not really, but its worse the more people that are involved, it always means someone is late) and I'm a lot more relaxed!

to each their own, I just prefer to take on smaller jobs and keep the stress to a minimum, the stresses of a large extravagant expensive wedding is not worth the monetary pros to the health consequences cons....

I love shooting weddings! At times they are VERY stressful and I think a lot of times I psych and stress myself out by thinking oh god I'm gonna screw something up really badly. And even if I do screw up... I shoot in RAW so nearly any screw up is salvageable in PP.

I don't shoot bridezillas, I don't shoot large weddings. I am also honest with the couple about my age, experience and level of equipment and I can tell right away if someone is gonna be a pain in my ass or not.

I have never had any major issues. Knock on wood, I think I have been pretty lucky....

I decided it is not worth perusing. Especially since my "beef" is with the wedding planner and not with them. I nicely explained to her that this was a valuable lesson for me and that in the future if a contract says non-refundable and the clients paid and then canceled they do not get their money back. I also don't think I would jump at the chance to work with another wedding planner considering how rude and ignorant this one was...

I do appreciate all the comments on this thread though! I am going to be revamping my contract this week to ensure I don't run into another issue like this.

Very good point... and most people spend more money on things they truly can't afford.

That is my main concern too is I do not want this to become a fiasco. The deposit is only about $200, not the end of the world if I don't get it. The wedding planner is very new to her job and is the groom's SISTER (I didn't know this till HE told me) The problem lies in her lack of experience, she tried to be very demanding with me and I gladly answered all her questions and made a very detailed contract but when it came down to it she is clueless. They are local but she is on the other side of the country, she is trying to establish herself as a planner in that area (I know it pays big bucks) but she also needs to learn that you can not say,"oops changed my mind" after signing a contract.

I end up taking 50% before I actually show up to the wedding and start snapping photos. I listened to my older brother who said that no one is going to pay for a product they don't have in full. I've been also learning not to listen to my brother :P

I am more or less annoyed at the wedding planner. I am not sure what I'm going to email back to her but she REALLY should know better and I hope she didn't tell them this sort of thing was acceptable.

I might file court documents just for the heck of it... its good to know this stuff for the future....
