Sure thing! Here are a few. One of the camera, one of each lens, and then one front and back of the Pentax lens, as well as the side view (for Pentax K) on the Sigma...

Thanks! It would be great to not have to shop for another lens...!

Yeah...it does appear (using a 1/100ths metal ruler) that one flange is out of spec with the rest...and with the other lens..hmmm...junk I suppose. :(

---------- Post added 02-11-2016 at 12:56 PM ----------

Oh...two? I was looking at the three flanges...

---------- Post added 02-11-2016 at 01:05 PM ----------

Anyway, safer to count my loses on that particular lens I think. Not certain a 50mm f/2 is worth losing sleep over. :)

Thanks guys.

Hey guys...I just this morning received a K1000 to add to my Pentax M42 collections. I guess this makes me a K-mount virgin. Anyway, the camera came with two lenses: a Pentax-A 50mm f/2, and a Sigma 100-200mm zoom f/4.5 Macro.

The Sigma mounts right up, twists and locks to the frame of the camera....the 50mm will not. It slots up (lining up the dots) but will not turn at all.

I'm certain there is a trip lever or something inside the lens I need to release somehow, but don't know where to start.

Any help is welcomed!

Thanks,

Sam

Spotmatic SPII back in service

Well...did the unthinkable...I sold my K10D in favor of a dust collector....yesterday I finally had an excuse to take out the old SPII with my 50mm f/1.4 lens and have some fun shooting the kids (don't call protective services!)

I got through quite a few shots...actually a whole roll that was laying around from 2 years ago. The last shot of course the winder got tight half way...wouldn't release. So I stopped, rewound, popped the roll out, popped another in (just purchased fresh roll), wound it up a few times and realized something...I couldn't see! Lens cap off? Check....Oh crap...mirror stuck!

I took the lens off...sure enough, sucker was locked in there...I tripped the latch with my finger and could manually bring the mirror down, but still had spring tension...not good. Not stuck from the old foam surround, but not good.

Brought it home...I know I've had the bottom plate off for this before...but left it dry a couple years ago...and of course, while I was there, modified my own cardboard battery cradle for the meter.

This time, I took her apart, blew it out...and found an instructible:
How to fix a ceased/"stuck" mirror on a Pentax ES Spotmatic

Really did the trick...I don't own the "perfect" oil for such a job...but I do have hair clippers...so I pulled out the Wahl Clipper oil...very fine, thin stuff, and put just a dab on the fulcrum and main mirror gear...I also smeared some from my finger tip on the outside edge where things slide together...went through each speed about two dozen times...silky! Loving life again....and hopefully, I didn't do the wrong thing here. Next stop, off to Eric, in a paycheck or two for a full CLA.

I'm going to look at other digital cams...but not sure I want to go back. I have the world's perfect lens on one of the greatest bodies...IMO. Maybe I'll pick up a used Q cheap and adapt the lenses to it...or maybe I'll add a rangefinder to my old school collection. (any suggestions? Can't afford a Leica really)...and buy my wife a Pentax waterproof/dustproof/run it over proof camera for her purse (hands off MY toys!)

Anyway guys...just wanted to let everyone know I'm back in service on film...if you could suggest a place to buy fairly cheap decent quality film, and a lab that isn't $10/roll of 24, I'd appreciate it!

Darn! I'm not keeping up with upcoming contest content...I have a fantastic sun shot, and one that isn't repeated or even remotely close to anything here. I guess I could post it unofficially?

here is a photo, scanned from an 11x14 print, so you don't get the whole thing...sorry. I wish I owned a negative scanner....! Taken July 11, 1991 from a moving ship using a 500mm lens on an even then, old film Pentax.

enjoy.

K-x vs K-7: What accounts for the price difference?

Someone be honest....how big of an issue is this? (excerpt from dpreview):

"...and cannot display the selected AF-point in the viewfinder."

So how do you select your AF points? I'm assuming I just won't have the 11 dots in there and be able to scroll around the way I could with a Canon????

Someone please explain....I'm educated in the field, but ain't that educated! :D

K-x vs K-7: What accounts for the price difference?

For me, no brainer...I come from a Pentax SPII....I also have owned a DSLR in the past, which I sold all my stock in...it was a Canon 10D. Any of the cameras I'm about the mention would put the 10D to shame...and I was very happy with it.

I'm considering highly the K-x, even over the Canon 500D (Rebel T1i), and the Nikon D5000 for the fact that to me, feature wise they are basically all equal (I'm no professional, all 3 are far more capable than I am), but the lenses that come in a package are of much higher quality from Pentax. I know kit lenses should never be a deciding factor...but hey, dad of 4 boys here...I'm on a tight budget too and probably will have to be happy with these lenses for a looooong time.

I'm looking to buy the package with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL and 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED Lenses included. Just looking for the best price right now....Amazon is selling the whole package for $850.

That also said, I have a 50mm f/1.4 and a 135mm f/3.5. Both 42mm screw mount Super Takumars...I'm sure somewhere there is a converter that will allow me to use these manually on the new digital!

Thanks guys...love this forum!!!

It is the 3.5, same as you. I think I might go crack the case open here in a bit and shoot...light outside is outstanding today, a bit overcast, just perfect.

I do hear you about the Canon lenses. So too often these days you hear of "bad ones." I've never heard of anyone getting a bad Takumar. I will take the same angle/lighting photo with both and compare their differences wide open....you know, where a 50mm lens really shines!

Right on! Can't wait to get images back then (well...have to shoot out the last 22 on this roll!) I haven't shot with the 135 yet...just the 50. I'm also writing down and taking close notes on all exposure setups so I can see how accurate I am!

You guys really need to jump on the freecycle bandwagon. I just missed (by a couple days) a Mamiya 1000 DTL with four 42mm lenses...I guess the person also had a Canon AE-1 that left a week ago. LOL Lots to be had, I guess folks don't really see 35mm cameras as worth anything?

Yes, I would be happy with great pictures! Mostly landscape I'm sure...since there is no way my kids are going to stand still enough for frame, focus, meter, adjust speed, cheeeeeeeeze, and snap. That is where the Canon 10D shines! I'm sure the Pentax will be a higher quality photograph though. Would love to compare my now two 50mm f/1.4 lenses though! (Canon vs Takumar)

I thought Jon Goodman was a comedian and actor? LOL

Dunno man...not totally secure in my "small parts with sticky stuff" ability. The other light seals look fantastic, like it was done not too long ago. The one by the mirror is the only one that bothers me...then again, do the parts there actually ever touch? I'd just be afraid of scratching or breaking the mirror with that gasket worn down.

The previous owner did tell me he had paid good money to have the light meter switch fixed...but then it broke again some 4-5 rolls later. I'm not convinced that I care about having it fixed...like told, it is a great battery saver not having it on!

I'll check into prying that contact up a bit right now! Thanks for the idea!

What's even more unreal...the guy listed the stuff mid-November! He had some 10 year old digicam that went right away, and no one even asked about the Pentax gear. I couldn't believe it...I was just happy to get the lenses, a 98% fully functional camera in great shape is just the cream on the top!

Hey all! I've posted a couple times before, but wanted to stop and say hi. I just totally scored a sweet SPII yesterday from freecycle.com here locally in SoCal. It came with a leather case and carrying strap that mounts to the tripod hole. Also, included two lenses, the famed SMC Takumars in both 50mm f/1.4 and 135mm f/3.5 editions. Also, a couple teleconverters...a 2x and 3x. Lens cloths, cleaner, air brush, etc. Also a Vivitar flash unit... All FREE!

Today I went down and purchased a battery and a roll of Kodak Gold ISO 200 for it (next will be B&W). I'm using the model 386 from Energizer, as I could not put hands on a 387. In order to get it in there + side up, I punched the plastic insert battery holder out, and then used some thin cardboard to build up a circle area to contain the battery. I then put the battery in with a 1/8" thick piece of aluminum foil to make up the difference. The meter seems to work like a champ! I compared needle readings to my fortune of a Sekonic L-508. For instance...wide open f/1.4 indoor with ISO 200, at 1/125 second exposure, the meter was reading right down the middle on the camera...the Sekonic read back and forth, f/1.4 and f/1.0. I am pleased with that result! I am going to run some trial outdoor as well just to see.

I figure I'd run 50 or so exposures before sending in for its CLA. The camera seems to be in good working order, however the gasket where the mirror flips up is pretty well shot (probably from cleaning and bumping it). Also, the meter switch will not stay up, or on. So you have to hold it up, or put the lens in auto mode to use it. When you let go of it, it shuts off. If anything it will just lend to saving my battery!

So far I am a VERY satisfied Pentax (Asahi BTW) Spotmatic SPII owner! It really is a great way to get back to my roots, and ditch the Canon 10D!

Serial # is 546xxxx...any ideas what year this may be?

Thanks all! Great forum BTW...lots of outstanding info!

I cannot find a 387 around here to save my hide...Walgreens told me to try Radio Shack, radio shack told me to try Walgreens. Not a jeweler in town has it either, been calling around. My question...Walgreens had a 386...identical in size when viewed side by side and laid on top of the old 400 that came out of the camera...I think I will give that a go...anyone tried it though?

Thanks

Hey thanks Drew!

Wouldn't ya know, as soon as I posted up, I found a source of cause...or at least a way to correct. There was a metal tab that is ever so slightly adjustable in there...so I tweaked it about 1/2 a mm or so using a very small flat head screwdriver...now she slides right off the mirror release with authority!

I will send my camera into him to be CLA'd eventually. Really want to throw a couple rolls through first. I hate getting new toys (even free well used ones!) and instantly having to send them in for repair...always nice to play with first IMO.

Anyway, now that I've got that handled for now...next step, de-smoking the camera, leather, and cases. Heavy heavy smoker had this camera for a very long time. You can smell it on the inside of the film door!

Hey all..this is my first post here, so I suppose hello first off!

Second, I am having this identical problem. Wind the film lever, release the shutter, and the mirror stays up. I have the base plate off, and what is going on is the lever that allows the mirror to release is not moving far enough out of the way. It stays in place, keeping the black metal piece with spring from returning toward the rear of the camera in its slot. I'm under the assumption that maybe the spring tension is shot not allowing the "L" shaped bracket (as it was described before) to return...or there is too much tension on the black rod with spring against said bracket, or something else is going on here, as I cannot figure this one out on my own. I suppose it is time to send it for an estimate, unless anyone here has another suggestion?

I have had the lever completely off, spring and all...no worries, all is back to its original positions and functioning just as poorly as ever.

To note, I received the camera and accessories today. Asahi Pentax SPII. SMC 50mm f/1.4 and SMC 135mm f/3.5 lenses. A couple of converters, 2x and 3x, and a whole host of other stuff (including a Vivitar flash unit). All free...thank you freecycle!
