Lightroom Classic CC folder question

Thanks Susan - but I can't get that to work. In a nutshell, here's what I've got:

- My "Pictures" folder on my HD has a folder called "LightroomMasters". Inside of there are folders for every year I imported back in 2015. So there's a 2004, a 2005, etc - all the way up to 2015. Each of those folders has a set of folders in it for each month - 01, 02, 03....11, 12 - and then each month folder has date folders in to for very day I took photos that month. Since 2015 I've imported all the pictures into their respective year folders (2016, 2017, etc...), which are located in the first level in the Pictures folder on my HD. Those folders don't have the same hierarchy. For example, inside the 2018 folder are just individual folders for each date - so there's no "extra level" of folders for each month. So each of those folders have 30 or 40 subfolders inside them, for each date I took pictures that year.

When I look at all these in the Navigator panel in LR, all the folder that were created from me since I've started using LR (2016 - 2019) are all rolled up into one folder for each year. If I expand those folders, then it shows a folder for each date I took pictures. That's great.
For all the photos I imported when I bought LR (2004 - 2015), they're all listed in the Navigator panel by their individual date folders, so there are 30 - 40 folders for each year from 2004 - 2015 - even though they're all rolled up into individual year folders in the "LightroomMasters" folder. If I use the instructions above, I can create a new folder called 2004, 2005, etc - except all the photos and individual date folders are already in a "year folder" (2004, 2005, etc) inside the "LightroomMasters" folder - it's just that "year folder" isn't showing up in the Navigator panel, even though it exists in the "LightroomMasters" folder, in the "Pictures" folder on my HD.
I tried just creating a new folder in the first level inside the "Pictures" folder called "2015", and then moved all the individual date folders from the "2015" folder inside "LightroomMasters" to the new "2015" folder out at the same level as "LightroomMasters". When I tried to look at the phots through the Navigator panel after the move all of th individual date folders were now grey - but they still allowed me to expand them. The pictures were all pixelated though - so it could "find" them, but it didn't appear to work properly. When I moved the individual date folders backing the "2015" folder inside "LightroomMasters" and went back and looked at them again through the Navigator panel all the pictures looked "normal" again.

Do I have to delete all of those individual date folders from 2004 - 2015 in the Navigator, then go move all the "year" folders (2004, 2005, 2006, etc.) FROM the "LightroomMasters" folder out 1 level to the first level inside the "Pictures" folder (where "2016", 2017", etc. are), and then re-import all those pictures again?

Lightroom Classic CC folder question

I just switched from LR6 on an iMac to LR Classic CC on a MacBook. Everything transferred over fine, and I was finally able to get everything in order folder-wise on the MacBook, but I still have one issue I'm trying to solve. My pictures ar located in folders in 2 different places, and I'm trying to get them all together in 1.

When I setup LR I just let it use it's "suggested" foldering system, by date. When I imported all my "old" photos from Aperture, they all went into individual year folders in a folder called "Lightroom Masters". So I have individual folders "2004", "2005", "2006", etc. in there, with all those photos. In 2015 - when I switched from Aperture to LR 6 on my iMac - I started creating the individual year folders in the "Pictures" folders (so in the "Pictures" folder I have the "Lightroom Masters" folder, and then "2015", "2016", "2017", etc... folders.

When I look in the Navigator bar in LR I see the folders from 2015, 2016, etc., but then all the individual date folders (I.e. 2014-12-25, 2014-12-24, etc.) that reside in Lightroom Masters show up for the years before 2015. So what I'm trying to do is create folders for "2004", "2005", etc to drop all those individual date folders into, so that the Navigator pane rolls up a little better.
I understand that if I just go create them on the hard drive and move the date folders in there it'll mess up LR because the path will have changed. So, I tried creating the "2004", "2005", etc folders on the hard drive - thinking I could then see them in the Navigator pane, and be able to move the individual date folders into those "master" year folders inside on LR so as to not break the path. But the folders I created don't show up in the Navigator pane so that I can move the date folders over.

Any idea on how I can create those "master" year folders, so that I can consolidate my Navigator pane?

Thanks....

Photo book producer suggestions

I've only had some photos made into a book once - about 4 years ago I used Apple (since I was an Aperture user back then), and the result was fine. Not outstanding - but certainly good enough.
A couple days ago I returned from a big vacation, and I would like to have books made for the others on the trip after I get around to processing all those shots. Does anyone here have any suggestions on who you use (and are happy with) - and maybe more importantly, who to avoid?
Looking to make a "hardcover" book with probably around 75 - 90 shots or so, of various formats & sizes. Probably need to be able to add words to some pages to identify where we were.

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Tim

Thanks for the creative suggestions. I'll have to check them out. Since I've got months before we go I've got time to weigh all your alternatives before I decide, so I appreciate the input.

Yeah - The 61" max height isn't ideal for someone 6' 1" - but that's the problem with a "travel" tripod. I want it short enough it'll fit in my pack, and not REAL heavy for dragging it around on hikes. It seems like the trade-off is shorter than I'd like in order to pack and not weight 7 pounds - AND not be $400+.
Unless anyone has any other ideas for something to fit my original criteria?

I'm looking for a travel tripod that will:

- pack down well enough to fit in a carry-on for international travel
- be "light enough". I don't anticipate having to carry it for days on end - just pop out of the car, hike with it for a few miles, and then back in the car - so it doesn't have to be "ultra-light", but light enough to hike with for hours
- be sturdy enough to support my equipment (my heaviest/longest lens is the DA* 50-135) in conditions like the high winds of the Scottish Highlands (assuming I'd hang my bag on it for additional stability)
- extend high enough that my 6' 1" frame won't have to be at a 70 degree angle every time I want to use it :)

After much looking around, I seem to be leaning towards this one.....

Benro Tripster Travel Tripod FTR28CB1GBLK B&H Photo Video

.....and I'm wondering if anyone here has any real-world experience with it? It hasn't been reviewed here yet - but I'm thinking SOMEONE must have bought one, and I'd like to hear your thoughts. I'm not stuck on this one - but it seems to fit the bill well enough w/o breaking the bank.

Thanks in advance for any input/opinions.

Topaz Plug-Ins & Lightroom.....

Several years ago I bought a couple of Topaz Plug-Ins (Adjust & Simplify), and have been using them on my Mac with Aperture. A few weeks ago I bought a copy of Lightroom 6, and now that I have gotten somewhat used to working with that I'd like to use my plug-ins from w/in LR - but I can't figure out how to access them.
Do I need to "load" them into LR somehow to get them to show up and launch?
Not sure if I'm supposed to do something in LR to tell it I have them, or if I need to re-download them from Topaz now that I have LR on the machine, or something else altogether???

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.....

Does anyone have any ideas on places to get photo page templates?
We've got a printing service at work that will print the pages for me, and even put a spiral binder on them - but I just need some kind of layout for the pages. I can't seem to find any web sites that just have "theme pages" I could use to drop my photos onto, so that I end up with a file I can give our printer to make a book.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Tim

Thanks Ross. It's working fine for me right now too - I was just thinking down the road. I never thought about them making Photos robust enough that it could take Aperture's place. Might have to consider that!

Time to make a switch from Aperture.....

I realize this may have been asked and answered in the past - given that Apple announced about a year ago that they were done enhancing the Aperture program - but searching this thread for things like "Mac" & "Aperture" don't really narrow down the results enough, so.....

I have been an Aperture user since I switched to digital years ago (except for a very brief stint with iPhoto right at the beginning), but now that Aperture will be history I need to find something else for photo management & editing. Since I've never really looked at/for any other programs I'm not sure of a good option.

For those of you that have made the switch now - what did you switch to, and do you like it?
I don't think I need all the bells and whistles (and price tag!) that I associate with Photoshop, so is Lightroom a viable option? Does it do most/all/more than Aperture does?

Any other options that are close to Aperture in terms of what it does? I had Aperture 3 and a couple of Topaz plug-ins, and that got me everything I needed & wanted to do - so I'm hoping to find something comparable to that.

Thanks in advance for any help/insight,

Tim

+1 for this one. While my kids were playing sports in high school I attended tons of games - everything from soccer to baseball to tennis - and I'll bet 75% - 80% of my shots were taken with that lens. The beauty of kids sports are that you can almost always get close enough (even in high school) that 135mm is enough reach. I can probably count on two hands the number of times I needed to pull out the 55-300 for "extra" reach.
And the 50-135 is plenty fast enough for almost all the action. It's a little heavy - but nothing you can't get used to - especially given the quality of shots it produces.

Good luck,

Tim

Hey Bob - All are nice, but I really like how that 2nd one gives the appearance that the mountains are a "background" that pp'd in behind the trees & water. Nice effect!
