Here's one my wife and I thought was worth pulling off to the side of the road and killing a half-hour for - near Iron River, Wi.
(Not sure why it looks so washed-out here. In Aperture it's got very rich color - like the "original".)

Next lens for my K-5

+1 for this one. While my kids were playing sports in high school I attended tons of games - everything from soccer to baseball to tennis - and I'll bet 75% - 80% of my shots were taken with that lens. The beauty of kids sports are that you can almost always get close enough (even in high school) that 135mm is enough reach. I can probably count on two hands the number of times I needed to pull out the 55-300 for "extra" reach.
And the 50-135 is plenty fast enough for almost all the action. It's a little heavy - but nothing you can't get used to - especially given the quality of shots it produces.

Good luck,

Tim

Thanks calico. Once the weather gets cold enough for long enough those falls usually don't disappoint!

Thanks Tamia. Actually moving around behind there is the easier part. It's the getting up and down to and from there that's "interesting".
FYI - Here's what it looks like from the front.....

i love my new k5 but what to do with my k10

That's what I did with my K10 when I got my K20. I've found that once I have 2 bodies, it would be awfully tough to go back to just 1. Between the time/hassle saved with not having to switch lenses and the versitility of having two different lens options available simultaneously (not to mention the drop in probablitlity of the sensor getting dirty because you're opening the camera up to switch lenses "in the field") I found that THAT was worth way more than the small amount I'd get in sale/trade of my old body.

Just a thought.....

Took a hike through the above mentioned park on a beautiful Spring day on Saturday. Perfect day for hiking, and the Sigma 10-20 was "big" enough to cover the whole falls while standing in the middle of the creek about 25 feet back. Perfect lens for this application.....

Hey Barry - Welcome aboard. Looking forward to seeing some of your shots, as you sure have some beautiful country out there. I was out that way just a couple of weeks ago doing a "college tour" with one of my kids (neither of us had been to Oregon before), and it looks as though there's a wealth of landscape/nature photo material in your neck of the woods!

Here's a couple I took LAST January (2011) at Minnehaha Falls in Minneapolis, MN - from BEHIND the falls (used my mad ice-climbing skills  ). This winter's been to mild for any "good" shots. :p

K-5 "Instant Savings extended at B&H.....

Just noticed that the "Instant Savings" of $300 on the K-5 that was set to expire (again) on 1/31/12 has now been extended through 3/31/12 at B&H.

Darn - And I was hoping that when it expired on 1/31/12 they would just move to a new, lower price. Like something in the "Black Friday" $999 range.

Oh well - Maybe they'll have a "President's Day Sale" or something.....

Nature Behind the falls - Part II.....

We got some hazy sun this morning, so I headed back to the same falls I shot last Saturday, to see what the sunlight does coming through the ice. For perspective, here's a shot of the whole area.....

#1

Not trying to do anything with this shot other than give some background. The snow-covered clumps of ice on the left are the actuals falls. All the vertical ice to the right of the falls has nothing to do with the creek, and is there due to (I believe) a combination of ground water "leakage" and snow melt from the area above. That vertical ice is the stuff I'm getting behind for the following shots.....

#7 (My favorite of the day)

If you compare last week's shots to the last couple here you'll see that the back side of this ice has gotten much more rough over the last week. That's due to the fact that there was actually water running behind it this week. That's noteworthy because since Monday evening it has been below zero here every night - with temps rising only into the single digits above zero (F) during the day. Logic would seem to indicate the ice would be MORE frozen - not less - this week. I guess that just shows the power of the sun.

The ice was getting "soft" enough that I doubt I'll get back behind there again this winter - so I hope all of you have enjoyed the view from "behind the falls" for this season.

Thanks for looking.....

Nature BEHIND the waterfall.....

It's been cold enough lately that I though I would run over to a local waterfall yesterday to see what I could find. This is what it looked like from the "regular" viewing points....

But - if you actually climb up what is normally the falling water in the summer, and get behind the waterfall - this is what you see.....

Pretty "cool" - eh? :hmm:
Actually, it was about 14F out, so not too bad for mid-winter in Minnesota.

Thanks for looking.....
