Landscape California Superbloom- Carrizo Plain Spring 2017

First post in a loooong time!

I'm going through photos of the Superbloom at Carrizo Plain from this past spring. For most of the year, Carrizo is rather barren and dry. This past winter's heavy rains spread over a favorable period of time paired with good weather conditions produced something incredible.
The "best" California wildflowers I have ever seen. Looking forward to revisiting next year!

Thanks for the comments :P

I took this photo in my bedroom on a cool night. I left the window open enough to lower the room temperature. Butterflies wont and can't fly well at temperatures cooler than 70-75 degrees F. I set up a basking lamp aimed at my face from just next to the camera. When the butterflies were placed on my face, they open their wings to bask and warm up! I had to work fast because they would start to flutter after about one minute. Ta Da!

My button fell off and I sent it into CRIS in Chandler, Arizona. I live in CA and the turn around time was about a week and a half. I was actually one month out of my warranty period but they serviced it anyways without question.......and I had purchased my camera in Canada. All they asked for was proof of purchase.

Thanks all!

I was using the Sigma 105mm macro for this. I'm sure that lenses like the pentax dfa macro would work just as well. I was using the Pentax 540 flash through umbrella for lighting.

I seem to stumble around the use of strobe lighting. But I finally got a simple little umbrella to play around with.

I realized i haven't updated my frogs lately! Nothing as dramatic as they used to be. I took some shots of them outside for some nice even light.

Some from indoors....their cage lighting has changed several times. That might help explain the different look from the images over time.

Two Males
19.

Males of this species exhibit a behavior known as hilltopping. Males congregate at hill tops where they patrol territory for females. It is thought that this allows to butterflies to concentrate themselves for higher breeding potential. This might help explain why there are so many butterflies on grassy hilltops next time you find yourself surrounded!

A female on the host plant called Sweet Fennel. Sweet Fennel is a naturalized invasive from Europe. It is related to carrots, parsley, and other plants within the same family. it is widely distributed and has proved advantageous for the Anise Swallowtail which would otherwise be faring fare worse in our ever developing world.

Some on the top left have already emerged. the rest are still developing. The skin becomes clear about 12 hours before emergence
11.

Turn around for a minute and there are more!
12.

Emerged adults move to the top of the enclosure and hang upside down to inflate their wings to full size. They are ready to fly in about an hour
13.

The group! A soft hamper doubles as an excellent transfer container.
14.

While the weather was bad outside I kept them inside in a tent.

I haven't posted in a while but I've been working on a project lately. It's difficult to describe the process in just a few photos so there are a bunch!

I found a group of 5 caterpillars in july on the same plant that I found caterpillars on last year. The adults emerged and laid eggs....about 100.

Come a month later and all 100 butterflies hatched and laid eggs again.

Here's a little insight on the project.

Caterpillars are in their last growth stage (5th instar) and are eating voraciously to pack on enough fat before becoming chyrsalis. They ate all of the leaves you see.....X5.

2.

An unusual black and teal morph showed up in this batch

%*$#^(&! The Lens Release Button Fell Off my K-5!

yup and so my button just fell right off while I was changing a lens. My k5 is at about 10K clicks now. I always noticed that the release button was a bit loose/ wobbly but thought it was just new design. The release button on both of my K20d bodies are solid after roughly 70K and 30K clicks. Off to repair! :(
