I must be having brain freeze. Or the Pentax K20 manual is poorly written. Either way, I can't get the Exposure Bracket mode working. Perhaps the dials are set wrong? Wrong menu context?
When I follow the instructions on p. 129 ("turn e-dial while pressing Exp. bracket button"), I get nothing, and no response on the LCD screen.
Help.

The hair. That's the best part of a lovely photograph. And complementary skin tones and aqua shirt color set it off nicely. But what a great head of hair. If he wasn't so dignified and digital, I'd like to pet it just a bit...:o

I love the red ribbon in contrast with the white of the church and the warm, moderating skyscape. The first one is more eye candy than I can appreciate. I'm a landscape architect, and I know fieldstone doesn't come in that extreme range of colors. Still, very pretty. After a while, HDR can get tiresome if it's not used with some restraint. I find it best to bring out texture in high- and low-light/shadows. But for early trial shots, quite loverly!

You gotta love the diversity of philosophies on this forum. In an earlier thread, I'd suggested my ideal travel kit was my K20 and 2 pancake lenses.

I just picked up a 75-205 Vivitar 1:3.8 macro, as part of a K1000 that had an M-series 50mm lens I wanted. While I was cleaning the Vivitar I noticed the diaphragm was sticky, and 'sprung back' only when I gave it a little shake. It did, however, mount on the K20 and allow me to snap shots.
Seeing as I got it basically for free, would I be foolhardy to 'go in' and try to fix it? I'm assuming it needs cleaning and lubrication -- I have no experience, but I'm game! If I mess up, no loss, and I will have learned something.
OR...is this a decent enough lens that I should get it repaired professionally? Any idea on the cost? ( I could actually use a long lens. . .)

Hmm. The Raynox 150 looks interesting. Very worth considering. It's been 20 years sine I uses a teleconverter on my old AE1. And, yes, I looked at the LX3 and the micro 4/3 approaches, but loved the K20D too much and could budget only 1 camera. Plus, I'm less sure the smaller cameras have the weather-resistance that the Pentax does.

+1 on the backup body, troyz. In fact, last night I spied a Craig's list ad: a K1000 with 50mm and 70-205 Vivitar, for $30, all in great shape. 20 minutes later I was the proud new owner of a classic, but clunky, Pentax. Happy times!

I'm impressed. This is a very generous community of photographers. The word 'convivial' comes to mind. Thanks for all the great advice -- lots to think about!
I'm leaning strongly toward the 21mm. And the 70mm is an option I hadn't considered, yet it's very compact. Macro capability (thanks Nick) is also important to me, but it looks like the DA 35mm is a bit too bulky...maybe another brand? I know I'm slogging around with an SLR, but I need to be as subtle and lightweight as possible; 'palm-ability' is what I'm looking for.
Thanks again everyone.

I'm headed to Africa in June to do some research on villages and landscapes. I want to travel light, including the camera itself, which I'd like to slip in and out of my pocket. I don't mind switching primes, and need something in the slightly wide to slightly telephoto lengths.
So here's my notion: pack ONLY the DA 21mm and a DA 40mm pancake lenses.
What do you folks think?

Hi all Pentax fans. My name is Ken and I live in State College, Pennsylvania, amidst some very pretty ridges and bucolic valleys. I teach at Penn State University (Joe Paterno's home), and am originally from the Toronto area (I'm a dual citizen).
I was a dedicated SLR user for years (Konica T4, Canon AE1, but I always lusted after the compact Pentaxes...), plus a few digital prosumers, but am thrilled to have just purchased a 20KD. I'm on the lookout for the sweet pancake lenses for upcoming field research in India/Nepal and Africa (Ghana/Tanzania).
A final bit of trivia: I ride a KLR650 dual sport, which is I think of as the Pentax of motorcycles.
cheers!

Welcome, juicebox. Enjoy the site, and hi to my fellow Torontonians (I'm a Toronto native but have lived in central PA for 15 years).

Hi JP. I'm brand new, too, but thought I'd start with a welcome. I'm from Toronto originally (don't hold it against me!), my daughter went to McGill, and I've come to love Montreal.
Oh, also, my favorite Quebecois band (via my daughter) is Les Cowboys Fringants.
Enjoy.
