Rainy humid day but my gardens are finally taking off! Not sure if this is the best composition? But the iris is pretty. Also, the line around the iris petals is there on the RAW file, so I am not sure what that is all about. Thanks for having a look. |

Sooooo, I'm sitting on my deck Monday morning when I notice my first hummingbird visitor for the year. It's a female, and she's collecting spider webs from my kitchen windows. I witness this event annually and always try to follow the females when they leave...never, however, discovering their final destination. (Hummingbirds use spider webs as the glue to hold their quarter-sized nests together :) )
Until this time... :)
She flew away and I didn't see where she had gone, but then returned a few minutes later for more building materials. This time I watched as she flew up to perch on a limb just outside my 2nd floor bedroom window. Cool, I thought...her nest must be somewhere close by. I then watched as she flew back down and gathered some more spider webs...and returned to the same perch.
Hmmmm...maybe I should go get the binoculars and investigate further...or better, still...my camera
You may have figured it out by now, but this may turn out to be one of my favorite hummingbird seasons ever.
Located on a branch, extending from neighbor's locust tree, approximately 8 feet from my bedroom window, I now have my first documented Ruby-throated Hummingbird nest under construction and in my yard! I'm hoping I'll be able to record and share much of what happens here over the next few weeks.
Here's what I have so far...

Thanks for looking!!

One from last night of the massive aurora borealis over Iceland - must correct one thing - it's taken at ISO 1250 but it didn't allow me to select that here :)

Yesterday, I was privileged to spend the afternoon at the massive Gay Marriage event thrown by Seattle City Hall. It was amazing to hear each couple called out and hear that so many of them had been waiting 10, 20, 30 even 43 years to have the right to marry. Forty Three Years. Wow.
I know that over 150 couples were married, but I couldn't stay for the whole thing - I was woefully under dressed for the event :D
This was the most concentrated photographic JOY I'll undoubtedly ever get to photograph and I'll never forget it. Here are some highlight photos, but I have the story of the day and a huge photo essay post on my Blog - please go enjoy the whole sheebang :)
And those of you in Washington State who helped make this happen with your votes and love - you are the awesome-est :D |

The corn field across the road from my driveway has been tantalizing me for a while. The sun rises just behind it and I wondered how a sunrise shot would look. Unfortunately, the weather hadn't cooperated with me until this morning. Luckily, I was awake just before 6:00am and walked out to the end of the road. I was doubly pleased to see a bit of fog in the distance.
I tried a few HDR bracketed shots and found this single exposure looked best. The K-r has much better dynamic range than I think I sometimes realize. I was able to do a lot with this in post.
Thanks so much for looking and I hope you like it. :) amber skies by loco's photos, on Flickr

Originally shot in landscape orientation on the 8mm, but turned round and cropped further since I liked that better in the end...
I've visited these crosses before, but I do prefer this new version.

Last night a little before 10 pm I noticed the auroras were visible. It's only the 2nd time I've ever seen the northern lights. I drove and found a dark roadside to shoot some pictures. The auroras really didn't move or change much so I used the opportunity to shoot a 26 minute startrail image. It's made up of 94 pictures shot at 15 seconds, F3.5, iso 800. At the bottom right in the cloud is an iridium flare I believe. I had to clone out all the annoying plane trails but I left that. Aurora and Startrails by kevin-palmer, on Flickr

I would like to thank all forum members for their contributions regarding the K-5, as it was your posts that convinced me to take the plunge and upgrade from the K-r which i've had and enjoyed for the past couple of years. Living a remote region of Scotland where there are no camera shops to speak of your opinions were invaluable to me.
I've also attached a couple of images of St Kilda which i visited last summer. One of Gallan Head the most North Westerly point in Scotland with a fantastic trout loch, and an image of Gearrannan.

It never ceases to amaze me how condescending some "pentaxians" can be to people simply trying to learn. Thank Zeus that the vast majority of experienced photogs on this forum know that it is here to educate and inform anyone and everyone regardless their level of experience. Snobbery alienates.:hmm:

I have a few similar shots with the gold reflection in the water from the turning leaves, but I liked the black background the best. He's facing out of the frame, but it still seems to work...

Going through my photos, I rediscovered this image taken shortly after purchasing my K-x (first DSLR) a year and a half ago. I was driving to my in-laws' house when I noticed the sun breaking through the fog at a city park. I happened to have my new camera in the passenger seat, so I pulled over and grabbed it - running up the hill to try and capture the scene before the visual drama disappeared. I was only able to capture three frames before the sun broke through completely and the moment passed. Here's one of them, converted to B&W to enhance the interplay of light and shadow...
