Hi falconeye,
I have questions regarding the SDHC card that you are using, in particular for video.
Firstly, I'm assuming that writing to the card, video imposes a heavier demand than shooting still photos, even continuous shooting.
What Class card are you using?
For my Panasonic HD videocam, the manual recommends Class 4. But AVCHD produces much smaller file sizes than MJPEG. In the K-7 manual, it only states that a "fast" card should be used. Is Class 4 fast enough if I video HD at the best quality?

Earlier on, there was a discussion going on about there being 2 spec sheets with some differences.
As far as I can see, the spec sheet released here did not come from an official Pentax website. It could well be the earlier preliminary one. I'd wait a couple of hours more for the official release.

Thanks. So if I'm trying to be artistic, the DSLR will allow me to play with shallow DOF and bring things in and out of focus. But if I want to do simple recording of the event, then I simply use a smaller aperture setting to provide for more DOF, right?
As for 24p shooting, my understanding is that most flat panel displays now will playback at a higher frame rate (eg the 2009 Panasonic plasmas accept 1080/24p but playback at 1080/60p). Does that mean that I shouldn't see any problems with motion?

Thanks jay, will try to digest all that info (and might come back with more questions later).
But for now ....
I was looking at the current 2009 consumer videocams recently and had shortlisted the Canon Legria HF S10 or 100 and the Panasonic HDC-TM300. Waiting to read reviews on their video and still pic capability before deciding.
At the same time, I was thinking of a DSLR, and news of the K-7 started coming out. So now, I'm waiting to see whether the video quality of the k-7 will match up to these videocams.
Apart from ergonomics, what can the videocams do that the K-7 might not be able to?
And would it be reasonable to say that the quality from 720p from a DSLR and 1080i from a videocam would be very close?

Because to my simple non-techie mind, I'm thinking -- if its just for still images, why couldn't it have simply been 1080p. Why pass an interlaced signal and have to go through the deinterlacer in the TV? Wouldn't you get a better still image if you simply passed 1080p and skipped the need to deinterlace?

If HD video recording is at 720p, 30fps (according to RH's posted specs), could someone please explain the usefulness of a 1080i output to the TV? Why not just output 720p to the TV? Are there TV sets that can take 1080i but not 720p?

Based on RH's specs, I did a size compare with the Nikon D60. It is JUST 0.1 inch wider and taller than the D60! But it is 0.4 inch deeper -- better for gripping perhaps.
Weight-wise, with battery, its 26.5oz is a full 8oz heavier than the D60! Sounds pretty weighty.

I take the Chinese word to mean "approximately" or "about" more than "almost". If you notice, its the same word they also use to state that the sensor is 14.6MP.

No techie here, but I believe in video mode, shutter speed is in reference to the electronic shutter (ie, how data is read from the sensor) and not the physical shutter.
Regarding the discussion about 720p, 1080i and 1080p, what I currently don't understand in the world of consumer videocams is that the top of the line 2009 models state that they shoot in progressive, but that the recording is interlaced. Eg, The Asian specs of Canon's Legria HF S10 states progressive frame shooting (PF25) but 50i recording; and Panasonic's states its Digital Cinema mode shoots at 1080/25p but has a small note that says the video is captures as 25p but converted and recorded as 50i.
I don't understand why they shoot in 25p but record it in 50i. So if playback is at 50i?
If we don't get 1080p in the K-7, no big deal then as it's not available in current videocams anyway?

Looking at the detailed breakdown of the meaning above, and trying to get at the meaning and sacrificing some character-to-word accuracy, I'd go with:
"Heir of a Proud Heritage"
If there was an English equivalent brochure, I think this phrase would capture the essence of the Japanese version.

Thanks. From what I can make out, looks like the focus is on accomodating weather-resistant lens rather than any revisions to the optics (sorry, creampuff).
Seems to be a slight revision of the mount on the body -- basically the same mount with one key difference -- the flange of the mount on the 1st body is wider than the flange of the mount on the 2nd body.
They describe:
- A lens with a sealing ring that presses against the mount on the camera body for water resistance.
- A 1st body (the "compatible" body) which is built taking into account the pressure exerted by the lens sealing ring, so that the optimum lens to sensor distance is maintained.
- A 2nd body (the "incompatible" body) where the lens would connect to the body with the sealing ring not coming in contact with the body mount. Thus maintaining optimum lens to sensor distance, but no water resistance sealing.
They explain that the reason they are doing this is that the 2nd body was not designed to take such lenses, so the pressure of the sealing ring on the body mount would throw the lens to sensor distance off the optimum.
Presumably, the 1st body is the future we are looking at.
Other patents they have filed for:

- Improved motor in SDM lenses (US patent application 20080297003)
- Miniaturisation of the viewfinding system (presumably for the K20D-type camera because it describes the use of a prism) (US patent application 20080232791)

As someone starting to explore the realms of DSLRs, a 2nd gen K-m with the K20D's sensor and weatherproofing would be something that I'd jump at. I just hope that there are many more like me out there and that Pentax has really identified this as the direction in which to go. :)
