Do you own a *sharp* (& cheap, so manual ok!) wide lens? Need recommendations!

Actually, you did quite well with a K200D and the lenses you already have. I do have a question about your 18-55 kit lens. Which version do you have? the mark II (to me) is slightly sharper than the original.

JeffJS, check wiki for Chic-Fil-A for the story.

As for B&H store closings per holidays, etc., Their site, their rules. For my photography needs they and Adorama are the sites I buy from for new equipment. Now used, I like auction sites........

Yes, the sale prices there are quite high for limited lenses.

I guess they do not expect people to shop for the best prices before looking at their sales.

I have this happen with my at-work computer (WIN XP). Especially running IE7 or 8, since PF is trying to load the IE9 scripts first.

K200D is a good, solid camera. I've taken some good wildlife pictures with mine and the kit lens.

For the lenses you want/wish to have; on a budget, i'd suggest looking at either M42 mount lenses or full manual K-mount. These are all relatively cheap glass and have great optics.

If you could afford it, the DA-L 35mm f 2.4 is a good walk around lens for the price. It's certainly not as expensive as the FA limited lenses these days.

K-5 Image Resolution on SD Cards

woodyneale, if you were to change the DPI to 72 in the Image properties (Photo Shop), the overall size displayed will multiply by 3 times.

The images from a K5 would let you crop then resize the image and not lose too much of the image quality, compared to images set at 72DPI.

File sizes?

In Adobe Photoshop 7.0.1, the New Document Preset Resolutions can be changed by going to:Edit:Preferences:Units & Rulers.

Note that the New Document Preset Resolutions are set to:

Print Resolution: 300 pixels/inch
Screen Resolution: 72 pixels/inch

Also, if you have a K-r image and a K100D image open in PS, check the K100D Image size by clicking on: Image, then Image size in the drop down window. Note that under Document size the Width, Height and Resolution. Now, do the same thing to the K-r image and change the Resolution value to the same as the K100D had shown. You'll note that the overall picture file size has decreased by a large factor. From my guess, your PS is using the file size originally from the K100D and applying it to your K-r images.

(sterretje's utube link shows for PS 7.0.1, which is what I used above).

Pentax da 300mm f4.0

I'd have to say it would depend on what you're going to use it for. If you're just going to be doing only long distance photos, the 300 would be ideal, but if you're going to be shooting different topics (landscape, wildlife, etc), the zoom may be better to frame your photography subject better. Both have the same qualities to take great photos (WR, IF, quick shift focus), plus are in the same price range and have a very high standing in the len review section.

For my use, the 300 would be my buy. I consistantly am maxxed on my 55-300 when it's attached to my K20D. My K5 sofar only has be with FA and DA primes.

I've seen similar techniques on NOVA (PBS) for astro-photography. I don't remember how long ago that was, but they did not get into any detail about how to do it.

For lenses, you can also check out Pentax (and non-Pentax made) lenses in the reviews at the top of the page.

I also heartily agree that the 55-300 is an excellent lens to get. The extra reach is great to have.

Also, check out the K-r forums. There's probably questions asked there you haven't even imagined you need to ask about:

Same for me also.

(FYI, Slightly better deal from Adorama though, since you also get a SDHC card, aftermarket battery and camera case for the same price).
