The Pentax flash system is one of the reasons I haven't upgraded since purchasing my K30.
14 months ago I picked up a used Canon 60D and 18-135mm (Non STM) lens and it had only 1748 shutter actuations. I bought it from from e-bay for less than $325.00 delivered.
The canon flash system is eons ahead of Pentax. Their on board flash can be set to E-TTL and FEC used for fill flash.
I've purchased 3rd party Flashes with all the bells and whistles including radio receiver for less than a low end flash for Pentax. All the functions of the flash can be controlled from within the camera but I do have an external transmitter that controls all the settings I'd need.
I've settled on manual flash which can be accomplished with my K30 using the same equipment (YN 560 III and YN 560 IV with a 560 TX transmitter-canon version) I use with the 60D.
I find myself using the 60D much more than the K30 just because I have the option of HSS and ETTL if I should need to use them.
I'm waiting for the new Pentax to come out but if it doesn't make some attempt to up it's flash capabilities I'll be leaving the Pentax fold for good.
Flash has become a very important aspect of my photography over the past 2 yrs. I now find photography quite limiting without flash. I enjoy that I can use flash to create beautiful lighting and don't have to rely on "available light" it's so invigorating.

I have the large and XL2 flash benders. Like you I was skeptical/cautious but after nearly a year I finally picked up the xl2 and found it so useful I bought the large bender and the diffuser.
If you're expecting the light to be as soft as a softbox you'll be disappointed. The light is similar to that of a beauty dish. They work great for bounce light also.
Don't bother with the imitations they don't compare in build or material quality, I've handled both and there is no comparison.

I have that AF 48-1, it worked well on every k series I had (100, 200, and the Kr) HSS initially didn't work with my K30 till the firmware update.
I'd guess that Pentax didn't change anything with the K50 flash at least I didn't hear about changes,
so I'd bet it works.

I'm a little confused, is your flash set to HSS, if so then 1/2000 shouldn't be a problem for the flash.
The shadows on Haley's face aren't caused by the flash performance nor would the flash be able to remove them properly. Using a scrim or even turning her 180 would probably have removed them. The shadows are not unlike dappling found sometimes when under trees.
Anyway some nice and colorful shots.

The triggers you mention do not pass PTTL instructions they only send the fire command to the flash, in other words they're for manual flash operation only.
The 560 IV is a manual only flash.
If you want to get into PTTL off camera flash then you're going to be spending a chunk of change probably 3 to 5 times what you'd spend for a manual flash setup.

Don't waste your money buying any book at the moment. Use the free assets available to learn flash photography before spending your money on books.
Start at the top of this play list and work down the first 3 videos will help you understand how flash is controlled the next two will put that in action.
Neil Van Neikerk is a master at both on camera and off camera flash there is a lot to learn from his site Tangents, study this guy he's good.

Now to your original question:
Purchase a mannequin from somewhere like Amazon as you can see from the link you can buy anything from a head with hair to a full body mannequin. I'd start with a head and make sure it comes with hair real or fake doesn't matter neither does the color.
Above all get your flash off camera, this means buying light stands, triggers, and a modifier.
To do this at a minimum you need the following.
Flash - YN560 III it was before the 560 IV came out . I'd recommend the YN560 IV it has better features.
Trigger- I purchased the YN 560 - TX trigger it is all you need to be able to trigger these flashes and more.
Modifier - Convertaible Umbrella. The umbrella's are cheap and versatile master this and the softbox is a breeze.
Light Stand - Umbrella/Flash holder and light stand.

You'll have no trouble bouncing that flash off walls or ceilings. Bouncing flash doesn't rely on zoom the idea of bouncing is to provide a large source of light thereby diffusing it.
The black foamy thing is nothing more than a bounce card being black it will absorb light which will help from blinding the person standing beside you.
When bouncing flash it is much more important to chose a bounce direction to bring the light to the subject. Once mastered you can create shadows very much like softboxes.

I just looked at my box and it has no C or N desgnation. As far as awakening the flash I just turned that feature off on the flash itself along time ago when using the yn 603C II triggers and receiver so that wouldn't be a problem. I really don't use the Pentax flash with this system just to lazy to go to the flash and adjust its power.

Why the Nikon version?
I purchased the 560-TX from E-bay and it mentioned nothing regarding Canon or Nikon version. When the 560-TX was set up initially it syncs with either a 603 or 602 trigger is says nothing about the c or n version.
The only difference between the Canon and Nikon version of these triggers was the shutter release cable and both fired the Pentax.

You're correct version 1 doesn't work with Pentax.
The n and c II are the same triggers the difference is the shutter cable. Buy the C version to get the shutter cable that works with Pentax. They work fine on my K30.

I downloaded the file and on my color calibrated monitor I saw no Blue Tint. I ran the color checker over everything white, gray, or green and the RGB readings don't show a blue tint, those colors are well within their color ranges.
What I found was a low contrast image.

I have the same room problem.
You could try and flag the strobe (place the flag between strobe and wall). I have a 5 and 1 reflector set that has a black side, I use this to flag my flash.
I'm not sure I understand your problem with a fixed shutter speed. Are you shooting in manual? I find this provides me the greater amount of options. I shoot with the K30 and as long as I stay at 180 or below shutter speed I have no problems, I can also adjust the aperture to my preference. The higher the shutter speed the less ambient light is allowed onto the sensor this produces the darker background.
I am able to turn a white wall to black by setting the shutter speed to 160, the subject was moved to about 8 feet off the wall (left me about 4 feet from the other wall) I used a 50 mm shooting from a kneeling position on the couch. The wall behind the subject was black but not as black as it could have been had I had another foot or two.

You're making no sense if you've set the camera to auto adjust ISO (TaV) why does it surprise you that after metering the scene it raises the ISO?
If your using PTTL set to TaV then ISO is the only option the camera has to make a proper exposure with or without a flash.[COLOR="Silver"]

The reason you can't get to that option is that it is an option dedicated for the eye-fi card.
Your going to have to set the card up you have differently as long as it's compatible with your camera you will have no problem.

I've got 3 560 III Flashes and the 560-TX you can make any and all the adjustments from the 560-tx.

The catch lights indicate the light was directly in front which was why I assumed on camera flash. Since you're using an umbrella you have at least 1 light stand? If so why not use it to mount a flagged (to keep direct light off the subjects) bare flash and bounce that off a wall or ceiling nearer them with no flash from camera unless its needed to trigger the other flash. You could also use a reflector of some type for fill if needed.
I really don't see these photos as under exposed they actually look pretty well balanced.

I'm using energizer rechargeables in all of my flashes 3 yongnuo 560 III and the 560 TX controller.
I've had good luck with them when used in my Pentax cameras including the K30.

I also went with the yongnuo 560 III and 560 TX. Bought the TX from eBay for less than $30 and 3 YN 560 III flashes from Amazon warehouse deals at $61 ea, total was less than $215 including tax and shipping.
For the price it has to be the best system out there.
