need advice for backpack

thanks everyone for your suggestions -- I researched the other packs suggested and it helped me make a better decision.

I went with a Lowepro Flipside 400. I'm female 5'2" and was happy that it seemed to fit my back (not too long). It has a padded waist support also. It opens from the backside, which is nice for security, as someone pointed out. You can then, leaving the waist belt thing hooked, take the shoulder straps off, spin it around, and access the camera. I wasn't sure how well this would work -- if it would feel like everything was going to fall out on the ground -- but it does. I'm able to fit the long lens down the center and the camera w/ the shortest lens (which is what i want to keep on it the majority of the time) down the center). Then everything else goes on the sides.

I'm extremely happy w/ the setup of the bag. It also feels thick, but it isn't heavy. Zippers I liked. On the Think Tank Streetwalker, I felt the zippers were a little too lightweight. Contrast that with the Tenba, which is a BEAST. I was pretty impressed w/ the amazing amount of heavy materials used on the Tenba -- but it's already heavy without any equipment in it. That led me to the Flipsides. I almost got everything into the 300, but the long lens was just a bit too wide and tall.

thanks again for your advice everyone. It's great to have this forum to come to for suggestions!

I am taking a trip this summer to Mesa Verde and Arches, and would like to purchase a backpack that will carry my equipment as a I walk. Whatever I buy also needs to be something i can carry on the plane.

Here's a pic of my stuff -- the Lil Bigma is probably the most problematic item, being 10.5" long. I also have a tripod not pictured -- i'm not worried about it, as it has its own carry case and my spouse will be with me to help carry stuff -- but it might be nice if the pack had an option to attach a tripod.

I'd like to be able to fit all the stuff in the pic into the bag (but I'm only planning on walking around with the stuff on the left).

I've been looking at:

*Tenba Shootout
*LowePro Fastpack
*Kata 3N1
*Kata BP-502

I think i'm liking the Katas. Both of those bags have option for the top/side to open so you can pull out the camera (assembled) fairly quickly to take a shot. I especially like that the BP-502 has a top-opening flap, but the side one might be more convenient, since you can swing it around?

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with any of these bags and fitting a long lens into it? Also, comparative sturdiness? My spouse thinks the movable dividers are flimsy. (I figure they can't be that bad if everyone is using them.)

Any advice would be appreciated! :)

hi, do you still have this for sale? i was wondering about the fleck you mentioned -- is there a way you could maybe take a photo (of something white, maybe?) and post it, to see how apparent the fleck is or isn't?

could you also say whether or not you used a tripod in the above sample photos?

thanks :)
