K200D No Card in Camera Problem

Sorry to resurrect a super old thread, but the nice weather has me thinking about my camera equipment again. I've looked in the slot and can't see any bent pins. My camera is obviously beyond warranty, so I'm considering repair or replacement. I found a place (PENTAX K200D repair | United Camera) that will repair my camera for $138 (I'm assuming I'll have to pay shipping as well). Does anyone have any experience with this company? Are they reliable?

Thanks...I'll check the contacts. I'm positive it is a piece of one of my cards. Both cards are blue, the chunk was blue, and I can see where the chunk is missing from my card.

K200D No Card in Camera Problem

I've had my K200D for quite a while, and I love it. However a few weeks ago I I went to put an SD card in the slot and it was really hard to put in. I took it out and put it in a few times and tried different cards. Since I had a shoot that evening, I just shoved it in and went to the shoot. Everything was fine and I was able to complete my shoot with no problems. A few days ago I decided to find out why it was so difficult. I looked in there with a flash light a small chunk of one of my SD cards had broken off and was laying down in the bottom of the slot. I was able to fish it out with a pocket knife (no batteries in the camera). Now cards insert easily....BUT it doesn't recognize that there is a card in the camera. I've tried multiple cards that work in other devices, but the camera doesn't recognize any of them.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

How do you reserve lenses for a specific date? I'm not seeing that option on the website.

So, I'm kind of in a sticky situation. I bought a DA* 55-130 f2.8 last July. The AF motor was bad right from the beginning. Pentax fixed it under warranty without any complaints (Thanks Pentax!), but the warranty fix took about 6 weeks. Unfortunately the same lens is now doing the exact same thing and not auto focusing correctly.

To Make a long story short, I need to send it in for Warranty repairs, and I have 2 wedding planned, and I wanted to use this lens. I have other lenses, so I'd be able to get by, but I have come to really enjoy the capabilities of this lens.

So, Is there any place that I can rent Pentax Lenses?

Poll: Tripods for Outdoor Portraits - How often do you use it?

@kunik I was of the same opinion. But lately it seems that I've been doing shoots in less-than-ideal conditions where the shutter speed is just a little too slow to get the sharpness that I'd like. Again, I'm kind of torn because I really don't want to haul around the extra gear, but if it is what I need to do in order to capture the images that I'm trying to get, it might be worth it. A monopod might be a good compromise now that I think of it.

I did a shoot over the weekend. All in all things went really well, but multiple times I found myself missing the convenience of my tripod. I've gotten out of the habit of bringing it on outdoor shoots because I believed less gear would be better. Now I'm having second thoughts.

I'm curious, How many of you use them regularly for outdoor portraits (wedding, family, etc)?

One of the things I don't like about the web as a medium for communication is that it is very difficult to have a disagreement and make it sound like you aren't being rude or mean. I assumed that you weren't being rude or harsh, and I wasn't trying to sound harsh in my response either.

I wholeheartedly agree. In fact, this is our main focus right now. Over the next few months you will see more variety for sure.

Let me know when your new site is up. I'd love to check it out.

Also, I'm still interested in seeing which photography websites you like. As stated in an earlier post, I'm all about improvement. And I'd love to see some examples of which sites accomplish what you are talking about.

Thanks for the feedback.

What polarizing filter do you use? How much PP did you do, and what did you change? The reason I'm asking is that I LOVE the colors on the bottom 4 shots. I've been trying to acheive that, but my results haven't been as spectacular.

So... are you suggesting that I just throw in the towel because I'm not as experienced as you? Or are you suggesting that you don't like my website because it may attract clients?

I find this point hilarious because your portfolio site is...a template. As a web developer, I'm fine with people using templates. I think it's a great way to get a website up and running if you don't know how to code. However, Photo54 is completely custom built by me and Bryant. The only exceptions are that we use Wordpress for our blog (I built custom Wordpress skin for it though), and we use SmugMug for the proofs (Again, I custom skinned SmugMug).

You say that like SEO is a bad thing. Last I checked, it's not.

Yes. But admittedly, I haven't shot as many as most people. How many weddings have you shot? Remember that point in your life when you hadn't shot a single wedding? Everyone needs to start somewhere.

You might need to check your definition on 'Trash The Dress'. No dress trashing anywhere in our portfolio yet.

You most likely won't see many of these 'hard to get' shots in my portfolio for a while. Why? Because of my client base. I live in Utah. A large majority of the weddings in our area are LDS (Mormon). The ceremony is closed (only very close friends and family), and no photography is allowed. Also, many LDS weddings have a very casual reception that many times take place at someone's house, or in a church recreational hall. Most of the time they don't even bother having the photographer show up to the reception. Thus the main purpose of the photographer is to get engagement, bridals (with or without the groom), family pictures after the ceremony, and pictures of the bride and groom after the ceremony. Of course those aren't the only weddings that we plan on doing, but it is a large majority.

We are fully capable of delivering everything that is marketed on our website. Besides, we have never advertised that we are 'pros', and probably never will, simply because it's silly to call yourself a pro. Your clients are the people who need to give you that title.

To reiterate, the site is not a template, but if it were, I'd have no problem with that. Yes our portfolio is small, but this is a new photography business, what do you expect? It will grow over time. Again, we can deliver anything marketed on our website.

Now to turn this back to a constructive conversation.

What are some suggestions you have for improving the site?
What are some suggestions you have for improving the photography?
What made the site look like a template to you? Why didn't you like those elements?

I've been in business, and creative design for long enough to realize that there is always room for improvement. Thus, I'm always open to suggestions.

BTW - I checked out your blog and your portfolio. There is some really fun and enjoyable photography in there. I really like your blog entry on the Yoga. You shoot from a very interesting point of view.

I'm just curious. A couple of people on this thread have mentioned that only offering 2 packages may make potential customers hesitant. Since it has been brought up a couple of times, I want to address it. However, I don't get it.

Why is only offering 2 packages a bad thing? Why would increasing the number of packages look better to potential customers?

I'm asking because if I can understand this better, I can address the issue better.

Thanks for all of your input this far.

Don't worry about sounding harsh. This is the exact kind of feedback that I need. I'm definitely going to make some adjustments based on your feedback.

@sebberry - I've had a few people report that they have had troubles with the slide show (I'm assuming you mean the one in our portfolio section). I think I'm going to try to find another solution.

I think this is a definite improvement. A little more color would be nice, though you can get that with your pictures, and you can make sure your logo is in color. That might be just enough. I really like the functionality and simplicity.

I think both would be a large improvement. The FotoFolio theme has some fun subtleties that add a lot (shadowed corners, light gray borders around the images). Those little things can ad a lot. I also like that there is a little thumbnail section of more photos.

The lightbox theme is pretty good too, I like how the dark background draws your eyes to the white container and the images.

If the purpose of your site is more of a hobby, than I'd say you are on the right track. The fun part about that is that since it is more of a hobby right now, you can do whatever you want, and have a good time while you are at it. You are definitely a head of a lot of other people simply because you asked for feedback. So many people forget that their site isn't just for themselves.

My site was designed between me and one other guy. He happens to be the other photographer on that site. We are both web developers, so most of it was custom built (we used wordpress for the blog, and SmugMug for our proofs). The parts that we didn't write, we custom skinned.

@blu3ness - Don't worry about being critical or harsh with me about web design. I'm a web developer, and one thing you learn when you develop webpages is that it's best to leave pride at the door, and do what is best for the site's users. That said, I like your input about the various fonts. We chose that font for the nav, before most of the other site was figured out, it doesn't seem to match the direction that we ultimately took the site. Now that I look at it, the site is a bit flat. I'll make some corrections there. I'll experiment with various backgrounds as well.

As far as the overall tone of site, on which elements did you feel that we attempted "abstract" or "abstract"? We did want the site to be very straight forward and easy to understand, but I didn't want to be strict minimalism.

Thanks for the feedback. Oh yeah, I visit SmashingMagazine nearly every day. That site has amazing information.

@Ash - Thanks for taking a second look. I'm curious about the portfolio not working. I've tested it in all of my browsers and it is working on my end. It does take a while to load (it's flash), do you think maybe it just hadn't loaded yet? If so, I should probably put something there that says "Our portfolio is loading, please stick around. Trust me, it is worth it." I do need to shrink down the size a bit. The portfolio is too big for some resolutions.

Which pictures on the homepage would your suggest I remove? I only want the best of the best on there.

As far as the packages go, we are working on a theory that too many options can be inundating. I will have a 'build your own package' option on there as well, I just don't have all of the details worked out like I want them.

I really appreciate the feedback.

Please don't think I'm sounding harsh, but I have constructive critisism:

1-The site has no purpose, no call to action. People will come to this site and think "Cool picture, now what?"
2-Since we are on the subject, what is the purpose of the site? Are you trying to get perspective clients to use you as a photographer? Did you just want a place to showcase your images as a hobby? Are you trying to sell prints?
3-I'm going to assume that you are trying to get perspective clients, or trying to sell your photos (your about us page mentions purchasing stock photos etc.) If that is the case, say it on the home page. People on the internet are generally very impatient. You literally have about 10 seconds to tell them what your site is about, and that it is exactly what they need (if they are in your target market).
4-Your site is so plain that it lacks personality and identity. I understand that many photographers want the photography to speak, but you still want the site to say something about you and your personality. Put your logo somewhere on the page (I'm assuming that your logo is the watermark), preferably at the top left.
5-Your site loads slow even though there isn't really anything on it. This is because you saved your image in too high of a quality. If you use Photoshop, use the Save For Web feature, save it as a JPG, and adjust the quality slider to somewhere between 70-80%. It will instantly show you the estimated file size, and image quality. For most photos you can't see any difference in image quality in that range. But if you can, and it isn't acceptable, just bump the slider higher.
6-I agree that there needs to be some other form of navigation other than Previous and Next links. A grid layout where you can click images to enlarge them, or something will go a long way for usability.
7-If you want your site to show up in search engines, you will need to textual content.

I'll gladly answer any questions you might have about my comments. It's getting late, and I'm tired so there is a chance I'm not making any sense. :)

I just launched my new website. I don't want to explain what theme I was going for, or what I was trying to accomplish to avoid any contamination of your feedback. However, I do want you to look at the site from the perspective of a potential customer. Sometimes I get too involved in a project that I forget the purpose, or overlook blatantly obvious flaws.

What are your thoughts?

EDIT: I totally forgot the link. Photo54. This is what happens when I stay up too late! Thanks for pointing it out Ash.

I have the 50-135mm f2.8 lens. I love it. However, I've noticed that if I don't use it for a couple of weeks, the auto-focus seems to not want to work for the first few minutes of use. After a couple of minutes, it works like a champ.

Is this a defect, or do others have this issue?
