I just retired at age 70.5. I expect my K-3 [2 years old] will outlast me and I don't plan to go any time soon, knock on wood. I still have a k30 backup & a K-01 just for fun so I'll still have a camera to shoot with. I am pretty good at saving so if anything unexpected happens to the K-3 in the short term, a KP may be in my future. I could always dust off my MX and go retro shooting film... :)

Nice!
I had to look twice before I saw the "sheet of paper" was something else entirely.

I bought the K-01 on a whim when the price was first way down in 2013. I took it on vacation to the UK as a backup body to my K30 and fell in love with it. The K-01 quickly became my indoor favorite with the 16-45. It turned out that about half of my photos were taken with the K-01. I like it so much I am thinking of buying a second body to put on the shelf just in case.
Happy Birthday K-01!

Likewise, it was just too cheap to pass up . It was intended as a backup but has ended up competing with my K30 as a "primary" camera.

When I first heard of this new lens I thought it would be a nice upgrade from my DA 16-45 f4, assuming the IQ was similar or better. However, as the specs became available, I realized the 16-85 is a much bigger, heavier lens.
Back in the day, I made the mistake of buying a f2.8 zoom for my MX. It weighed more than the MX body and I got lots of remarks from family and friends that hinted they were a little intimidated by the large lens pointed at them. After a short while, the big boat-anchor of a lens got put on a shelf and forgotten. I promised myself that I would not make that mistake again.
The 16-85 won't be on my purchase list because of the size [72mm filter], weight increase over the 16-45 [122g more than the 16-45] , and the variable aperture. I am sure it has enough features [zoom range, WR, possible improved IQ] to appeal to many but not to those of us who prefer smaller weight and size.

I ordered my Q7 on the morning of 12/01. I initially chose the silver/black model but it was back-ordered so I switched to the all black. My order status was "order received" on 12/01. I paid via PayPal and PayPal showed a payment of exactly what I expected.
I checked this morning, 12/03, and my order status was "No tracking information". This concerned me a little so I sent them an email asking for order status. I got an answer this afternoon, 12/03, which said the order had shipped and delivery was expected on 12/05.
This information sounds pretty good to me and I hope it turns out to be true [ sometimes a glass half-empty guy here :) ]
edit: As promised, I received my Q7+02 in black in the mail today and the $$ was what I expected. The Q7 is a great upgrade! Today my glass was full. :)

I placed my order through the Ricoh/Pentax website yesterday morning. My first choice, black+silver Q7 with 02 lens, was on back-order so I changed to the all black model. I noticed the back-order when I tried to use PayPal and found that is not allowed for a back-order item. I have my fingers crossed that there are no problems filling/shipping the order.

It is a bright, sunny day here in Maryland. My backyard has deep shadow under the trees and bright sun in the grassy areas. My Q handles it OK but burned out high lights are all too easy. I was playing around with the Q while my dogs wandered around doing doggy business. The snapshots were OK as long as the mix of shadow and light leaned mostly towards the bright light in the photo. I tinkered around with exposure and found I could avoid the burned out areas but lose detail in the shadows or have better shadow detail with the risk of burned out highlights. This is not a complaint, just the set up for my questions below.
My long term plan is to pick up a Q7 when their price, for a used or new one, drops enough. The Q7 review says "expanded dynamic range: yes" but I am hoping someone who has used both can give a better description. How does the dynamic range in the Q7 compare to the original Q?

If you are looking for a MF lens with a classic range [35-75 by 35mm reckoning], I would highly recommend a Pentax A 24-50 F4. It only weighs 13.2 oz with a 58mm filter size so I don't think it is front heavy.
If you prefer AF and/or want a longer reach, there is lots of good advice above.

Count me in on a wide angle prime that is equal to or better than the 01 prime. I would like a 35 mm equivalent but would settle on a 28 or 24mm equivalent. And this is the hard part, about the same price as the 01. A $500 lens goes on my K-30, not the Q.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experience & knowledge.
The 110 lens I have did not come with lens hoods. Would adding a hood to these little lens make a improvement to contrast & color? Most of my "test" shots have been inside where I wouldn't expect a hood to help.
My long term plans would be to use them as small, light telephoto lens for birds, squirrels, and other wildlife which where a hood might help.

I recently picked up a Pentax Q which is a much nicer camera than i expected. I have had a lot of fun playing with it but have not had a chance to try it on a nice, sunny day. Too much in the way of clouds and/or rain on my days off lately. My dogs are getting camera shy from me pointing the Q at them all the time. :)
I have done quite a bit of reading in the Pentax Q forum and am interested in trying some Pentax 110 lenses that I have laying around on the Pentax Q. I picked up a Fotodiox adapter, pulled the old Pentax 110 bag out of the closet and dug out the lenses. I have the 18, 24 & 50 mm lens. As various posts have said, they seem a little soft at f2.8 for my taste. The 18 & 24, especially, could use a way to stop down a f-stop or two.
I read that Lens Baby had a set of aperture disks that would create a smaller aperture to sharpen things up a bit. B&H has them for a reasonable price as well as blanks to make your size.
Now for some questions:
Has anyone used the blanks to make custom aperture disks and if so, what size hole did you drill?
While I am asking questions, are there any suggestions regarding the 110 lenses?

If Pentax/Ricoh offers this for the K-01, I'd be a lot more interested in the K-01. I have an aging istDS to replace some day soon. I was planning on K-r level camera but I have been wondering if Pentax intends the K-01 to be the K-r follow-on. This would give them a 3 body product line of entry level: K-01, enthusiast: K-5, pro: 645D which is probably the minimum they need to compete in the future. The p&s market is likely going to decline as camera-phones take over in the always-with-you, snapshot market. This leaves the higher end of the camera market as the place of intense competition.

To refine my question a little, on the cameras with an external EVF, it mounts in the place of a external flash [the K-01 has a mount point] and then plugs into some kind of connector [K-01 doesn't appear to have this].
Is the lack of a connector slot an indication that any future external EVF will connect to a k-01 follow-on model, but never be able to connect to the K-01?

Now that the K-01 is announced and the rumor mill isn't needed for it any longer, is there any hint that Pentax will offer some kind of external EVF/OVF?
In the pictures that I have seen, there is no provision for an external EVF/OVF. While the LCD is probably good enough for the P&S style of shooting, I doubt it will work very well with the longer/heavier lens. I know Ricoh has an external EVF for the GXR but the K-01 doesn't seem to have a place to connect such a device.
I haven't decided how I feel about the looks but I suspect I will get used to it. If I were to buy one, I would get a body and put one of my 28mm f2.8 lenses on for a "normal" view. The 40mm XS is just too narrow a view for me. I can't see resorting to stitching multiple shots to go wider. Now if the camera has built-in option like some cell phones [e.g., Droid X2] to automate the process, I might be able to live with it.
I have a istDS that I really like. I will be looking at the K-R successor or maybe a K-5 if the price comes down some when the successor to it is released. I was hoping the K-01 would be a possible companion to my DSLR but I was hoping for something smaller, say the size of my MX :D

I would be interested in seeing some pictures of the camera body to help with a decision.

As an istDS owner looking to upgrade, I see a lot to like in the K2000 so I am trying to learn more about it. What do you mean when you say you miss the green button in M mode?
I have a number of M series lenses that I like to use on my DS. I leave the focus set to AF and set M mode. I can set exposure by pressing AE-L and focus manually with the focus indicator lighting when I hit focus. I would hope to have a similar process available on a K2000.

I want to thank everyone for the good responses. I like what I have read since most of the answers were the ones that I hoped for :).
Now all I have to do is save the money and then find a good bargain on a K100d Super. As I mentioned in my OP, I hope to end up with whatever Pentax brings out in the near future plus have a trusty 6MP as a backup. In my film days, I traveled with a MX & ME for nearly 20 years. Having a backup paid off.
Thanks again.

I am considering picking up a used K100d Super to replace my *istDS since I would like to have the SR and the ability to use SDM lenses. Hopefully a K100d Super would hold me until Pentax tells what their plans are for the k200/k20 replacements and the prices drop from the new model levels to something more affordable [at least a year from now].
Since I don't know anyone that owns one, I thought I would ask some questions here: 1. how effective is the SR?
I have a Canon P&S with SR so I know SR is a nice feature for an aging fellow but not a panacea. I have never used a Pentax with SR. 2. How does the K100's pentamirror compare to the pentaprism that a DS has?
I have never had my hands on a Pentax with a pentamirror. 3. Are there any quirks in the K100d Super that I should be aware of? 4. I have some MF M series lenses that I use from time to time with my DS. Does the K100 function pretty much the same with MF ?
