Congratulations. I rented a 645d last weekend and will be making the same move as you. I may wait through black friday just to see if there is another price drop. Depending on how you get on with manually focusing older lenses, you might give a look to some of the 67 lenses. I was impress by the performance of the 105mm and the 90mm in the time I had with the 645d.

645d Advice?

Thanks for your thoughts everyone, much appreciated. I've had the itch to photograph with the 645d since it was release and today, I'll finally get the scratch that itch!

Brooke, thanks for you advice. I know better than to think that the 645d will make me a better photographer. However, having photographed with large, medium and small format cameras, I also know that not all formats are equal, my job is to exploit the strengths of the format and minimize the weaknesses. The big question for me is what are the strengths of crop sensor on the 645d and how do they compliment the gear I already have. BTW, I very much enjoyed your ballet photos, I was a modern dancer some years ago and I always enjoy dance photos that are well executed as yours are.

David, I appreciate your comments, particularly on the rendering of the files from the 645d, this is everything for me. I have looked at all the photos I could find on the web and will check the links you posted - I always love looking at other peoples work. It will be exciting to see what I can do with the camera and how that compares to my work with smaller format cameras.

672, I am keen to see how the 67 lenses I have perform. It would be a real bonus if I can use them and if I can manually focus them and get shots that are in focus, manual focus on the A7 cameras is so easy and accurate. I'll check my highlights and look for any sensor split issues - this is a concern.

Mike, Hopefully shooting with the 67 will provide some preparation for the 645d! One of my goals is to stop down more.

Kolor-Pikkor, thanks for the advise. I did find one comment about this in my research, I'll have to look through my cards and be sure to avoid the UHS cards.

Thank you all for taking the time to comment. I'll report back next week with my thoughts, hopefully they will prove interesting and maybe even helpful to someone else at some point.

645d Advice?

Hi All. Since getting my pentax 67 several years back, I have lusted over the Pentax 645d from a distance, always wondering what it would be like to shoot with and how the images would compare to whatever digital camera I was using at the time - currnetly the Sony A7Rii. Now due to some money I have made from my photography and the drop in the price of the 645d, I would actually be able to buy one if I want.

With that in mind, I have rented a 645d and the D FA 55mm and D FA 150mm lenses. I will recieve them tomorrow, Thursday and send them back on Monday. On Saturday I will be doing a portrait session for a local musician, who I know fairly well. I am looking forward to shooting both the A7Rii and the 645d side by side for a few days and in the context of a paid session.

I sold my K5 and moved to ff about 3 years ago, so while I am familiar with shooting with a Pentax, I am a bit rusty. So I was wondering if any of you who have used the 645d/z had any advise about the setup and use of the camera. Since I only have a few days to use it any advise would be welcome.

Also I have serveral Pentax 67 lenses (45mm, 75mm, 90mm, 105mm, 135mm, 165mm and 200mm) and I should be getting an adaptor for them tomorrow as well.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts you may have.

Another happy GR user here. IQ of this little beauty is better than my K5ii + FA31, handling is suprisingly good. A well thought out design. Easy to take with you anywhere and forget you have it, it's so small. Perfect pocket camera IMO.

Hi Stan,

I got a GR about 3 weeks ago and I love it. I never thought I'd ever get a camera without a viewfinder again, but for me the GR compliments my DSLR(K5, K5ii) so well and having an APS-C sensor in a camera that fits in my pants pocket, with IQ that is better than my K5 and limited primes is just amazing. Not only is the GR's IQ stellar, it handles remarkably well for such a small package. Ricoh has been refining this body for years and it really shows. Rumors are that they may release additional models with different focal length lenses, this may interest you if you think the current lens is too wide. The GR has two crop modes, 35mm and 47mm, I think the 35mm view gives you an 10MP image and the 47mm must be about 6MP.

The combination of the superb 18.3mm lens, the mirrorless design and the leaf shutter give remarkably crisp and detailed images. Quite a deal for $650 IMO.

On a side note, I would love to see pentax to take the GR's lens and build a DA* body around it, this would give them the weather sealed wide prime that they lack and in a pancake size package.

Thanks for your responses. In reviewing my test images there are all the failures are at 1/320 except one that was at 1/50. Didn't realize the the flash would not fire if shutter speed was too fast the flash wouldn't fire! Thanks again for your help!!

Hi all,

I've got a K5 a Metz 48 and Cactus V triggers. I am trying to use the flash off camera in Manual mode. My issue is flash is working inconstantly. It will be firing just fine and then it will not fire at all, I switch to Av mode and it works fine again, switch back to Manual and it still doesn't work. I pack up and come back home and try again in Manual mode and it works! Very frustrating. Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong? Your thoughts are much appreciated.

Interesting, I had not heard that. I'll do some work with center point and recompose and see if that helps. Still, pretty disapointing if I have to stick to center point and recompose. Thanks for you input!

K-5II focusing accuracy

Hi Lowvoltage. Your story is very interesting to me as I have had a K5 for about 2 years and I believe in am experiencing the same issue with its auto focus perfomance. Lately I have started to shot portraits for seniors, and while I am able to get enough in focus keepers to pass on to the customers, I am getting a destressing number of shots in broad daylight, focus point right on the subjects well illuminated face where the camera does not achieve anything close to acceptable focus and then on the next frame it does!

I was thinking about sending the camera in to CRIS to be checked but I am disheartened that this didn't solve the issue for you. The altenatives are to get a K5 ii which is selling for a great price now and use my K5 as a dedicated M42 lens camera, or jump systems and go to Nikon, possibly a D600.

Initially I thought the issue must be user error (incompitence), but I am pretty sure my level of compitence/incompitence has remained stable!

Anyone with suggestions, I am all ears!

Input from DA* 200mm Owners: Owners Regrets over 300mm ?

I don't own the 300, so I won't comment on it except to say I have seen may wonderful shots that others have taken with it. I do own the 200 and I really love this lens, not too big, not too heavy. The IQ from this lens is outstanding. I also find the focal length very useful on APS-C and it is so sharp, even wide open one can crop to zoom if need be. About the only negatives I can come up with is the SDM focusing is not especially fast, and it does exibit pruble fringing at large apertures but this is easy to fix in post processing. Here is a shot taken at f2.8, pretty sharp IMO:

I am in. I've purchased alot of new Pentax lenses in the past and there are several DA* lenses I would like to round out my collection. I have absolutely no intention of purchasing these lenses new at the current prices. Chances are I will get them used at a reasonable price form someone who switched brands due to Pentax's absurdly high lens prices!

Pentax, get a clue!!

Two lovely shots drm!

Here's a recent one of mine. Pentax 67, Fuji Acros 100 developed in Diafine.

Here's another shot on Portra 400 with the Fuji GA645zi, the color was so "off" that I played with some split toning in Lightroom. I developed this roll (as I do all my film). I used the Tetenal C41 kit as I'd heard such good things about it. But I am very disappointed. I got much better color fidelity from the Jobo kits I've been using. The fault could be mine, I am certainly not perfect but I've developed 20-30 rolls of color with Jobo and have been satisfied. This is the 3rd or 4th roll that I've developed with Tetenal and I haven't had a good one yet.

Got my first helios this weekend, a 44-2. I had a chance to take it out for a spin this morning...

This is my first lens that has a "free floating" aperture ring which is kind of fun to use for a change.

Thanks for looking.

Haven't posted anything in a while but I have been enjoying everyone's photos in the interim.

Fuji GA645zi, this is my small and light camera, great for travel or just keeping in the center consul of the car:

This was shot hand held with the expectation that I would stitch it into one image later but I think I prefer it as 3 panels even though they are not even and there is overlap. Kodak Portra 400.

Domke bag for P67 + 3 lenses

Thanks for your comments and photos, MysteryOnion! Nice bag I may end up going that route. I have heard the Think Tank bags are good and the orientation is similar. I appreciate you taking the time to post. The F-803 is 9 inches tall but only 3 or 4 inches deep so you can't have a lens mounted on the 67 when its in the bag. Nice bag but really not suitable for the 67.

I appreciate your comments Blackcloudbrew. I will keep this in mind. I don't have the wooden handle so that should help me stay on the (slightly) smaller side.

Domke bag for P67 + 3 lenses

Hi folks. I am looking for a camera bag to work out of that will accomodate my Pentax 67, with say the 105mm lens mounted and two additional lenses, say the 75mm f/4.5 and the 200mm f/4. In addition the bag should have room for about 10 rolls of 120 film, a Pentax digital spot meter, a waist level view finder and the usual misc. stuff, 2 filters, lens cleaner, micro fiber cloth, cable release etc... I live in rural Maine, so I am buying online without the benefit of taking my gear into a store and seeing how it fits.

I currently have a Domke f-803. This is a fairly small bag which accomodates my K5 and 3 to 4 primes very nicely. I like the understated "classic" style of Domke's bags especially the wax ware bags. So, I'd ideally like to stick with Domke. Actually I have used the f-803 once with my P67 for travel, with the 67 using the body cap and the 90mm f/2.8 and the 45mm f/4 stored unmounted. But I feel I need something that is more ideal to work out of.

I like the look and layout of the F-3x alot. It would be ideal to have the camera facing forward in the bag with say the 105mm mounted and one lens stored on either side of the 105. Then the front and side pockets could accomdate the rest of the gear. Unfortunately, from its dimentions,I don't think is big enough. Looks like I would do the trick for the K5 and it's lenses but the diameter of the 67 lenses is too big, seems like I would need about 11 or more inches of width for this configuration. On paper and in photos, It looks like the F2 might be a good size, although I am not quite sure how i would configure the interior of the bag. The insert that comes with the bag makes the space good for a smaller digital camera and lenses, not sure how it would translate to the P67 and lenses.

What do you all use, how much gear does it hold and how happy are you with it? Thanks in advance for your replys!
