The 85 1.8 or 1.9 if you can find one will most likely be very expensive nowadays. There's an Auto-Takumar listed on KEH.com for $364 plus shipping. KEH is great, by the way. Their grading system is of a very high standard.

Doesn't seem to be really much significant difference. The color is a little more subdued in the non-SMC, but still super bright and very accurate. I actually prefer the color of the non-SMC, though not sure why. Sharpness appears equal per aperture, but I've read some users who say their non-SMC's are a slight bit sharper. Whatever, they're both razor sharp. Plus, as you mention, the non-SMC's are not prone to yellow. The even older and usually cheaper Auto-Takumars are incredibly sharp as well, though the colors are even more subdued. Overall, I don't think the extra cost for the SMC is worth it, unless you're a collector, or maybe just for the brag factor. Either one will give you a phenomenal picture. I think the most incredible thing is that we're able to put previously used non-refurbished 40-year-old lenses into our own daily use on modern digital cameras and continue to get even more years' use out of them, with optical quality nearly the same as the best modern optics. They don't build them like that anymore!

I love this site altogether, and I really love the wealth of information in the forum, and I especially love the feelings that people have for Takumars around here. Anyone who's ever asked me about those "old-fashioned" lenses I use, I just direct them here to look at the great shots possible with these old pieces of glass. After reentering photography and going digital fairly quickly, I recently re-discovered the Tak's, and kicked myself for selling the many that I owned way back when "screwmount" was so unfashionable and they sold for 1/6 and less of what they do today!
This place is also a tremendous source of information for newbies who want to learn about the old Pentax/Tak lenses. As I write this, there's a seller on an auction site who's offering a Super Tak 55/1.8 with dented non-usable filter ring for US$198.99. Yes, that is one-hundred ninety eight dollars. I hope that anyone who's looking at buying there will look here very quickly and learn!!
