Ok - I am convinced - I'll hang on to the 50 and save up for the 35 - oh and check out Prodigal2000 while I am at it.

No - when I say size, I literally mean the heft and bulk of the lens - not the focal length. If I wanted macro mostly for bugs, the 100 or maybe even 200 it would be, but I am mostly interested in macro for small landscapes and patterns - not so much for the flighty things.

Any opinions out there from those of you who have used both of these lenses? Just picked up the K20D and have always wanted a true macro, but wasn't convinced that a 100mm would be the size of choice for me. Seems the 35 is just the size I am looking for and would be a superb, robust walk around lens. Not sure I want to let go of the 50, but wouldn't be able to justify keeping both.

Amazon has the lens listed for 419.00 right now - not sure I want to let that pass.

Why did you choose Pentax?

Pentax "thinks" more like a human - Canon more like a machine - and Nikon somewhere in between.

What's really wrong with K20D ?

I have no complaints at all of the K20D. Sure, other cameras may have faster AF, but I doubt if they have better ergonomics and user interface. That right there can cancel out the advantages of faster AF - at least under many conditions. I also have to wonder about this need for speed. I mean, many of the very best sports-oriented photos in the past 50 years were taken with manual focus cameras - hell, some even with flash bulb (i.e., Ali standing over his fallen foe with the smoky arena air behind him - one of the best captures of all times). Makes we wonder how critical fast AF really is. Perhaps to capture action yes - but certainly not to capture life - or more specifically - the drama of sport.

Then again I don't depend on my camera to make a living - I depend on it to make me smile - and in that - it performs exceedingly well.

Thanks arpaagent!! I just won an auction for one of these for a whole $19.50. From the looks of your pics, it is going to do exactly what i need it to do. I was looking for a small walk around lens, with modest macro capability to use with my 5x-zn film camera . As I'll be using it mostly on the river when fishing/kayaking, I needed a lens I didn't care much about harming. If the one I won is a good copy, I am going to be pleased as punch.

Thanks for the responses guys. I do currently have a WP20 and quite honestly I am not all that taken with it. I have adjusted to a lot changes in the camera world since I first picked up a Canon TLB 32 years ago, but the absence of a viewfinder just isn't one of them. I think I have come up with a solution though. I have a ZX-5n and I am going to pick up a manual focus 35-70 (if I can find one), or maybe a 50 macro. The camera is very light and if I do take a swim, I am out $100 - $150 instead of $700- 1,000. I can get back into shooting slide film too. This could be a whole lot of fun actually.

So far I have only managed to comfortably bring along the point and shoot when hiking/wading a river for a full day. Any suggestions for efficiently and safely carrying the dslr on the river for a full days endeavor?

Any recommendations for good quality, but reasonably priced neutral density, circular polarizer and sky 1-A filters for the Pentax 16 - 45 lens? I am usually not real fond of filters, but the above 3 make sense to me - minimally the sky filter to protect my new favorite lens :)

Recently upgraded to the Pentax K20D and a new 16-45 lens. (LOVE THEM!) Unfortunately haven't been able to get out much given the often subzero temps, but I have managed to sneak some shots inside:

What fun this new toy is - so glad I took the plunge.

Actually I am just from Michigan, but with the long stretch of subzero cold and the wide expanse of white around here, one might believe the Artic has moved south. I am a long-time Pentax user and a very amateur photographer. Digital has opened a new world for me and I just recently moved up from the Ist DS to the K20D and I couldn't be more pleased. I also discovered this site about 2 weeks ago - wow!!Great information and superb photos folks. Looking forward to just catching up on the threads here as time permits.
