18-250/Help me choose my next lens

Ok so now I'm in a bit of a dillema! I think I can get a new Tamron 17-50 f2.8 for about $370 canadian. The 18-250 is about 520.

The tamron retails here for like $650, so it's a steal of a deal. But then I have nothing over 50. Do I get both, and push the budget a bit? Or do I skip the 18-250, and get something else for the 50-xxx range? Or do I just stick with the 18-250 and skip on the good deal on the tammy lens?

This is true. The newer kit lens lenses coming out with the weather resistance seems nice as well! Hmmmm 18-250 vs. those 2 WR lenses vs. something else!

It's such a tough choice!

Yeah, my concern about it is that I won't be happy with the picture quality. That being said, I'm just starting out, and something tells me that I would be better served learning what ranges I want to shoot at and getting a better lens for those ranges later on.

I like to do landscapes, and wildlife. So that's 2 completely opposite ends of the spectrum haha. The 50mm is tough for some of the wildlife and general walking around stuff, because you just can't get close enough. On the other hand, the 50 is "ok" for some of the landscape stuff, but is still limiting. This camera stuff isn't always an easy decision!

Of course, having that one lens, might be great for middle of the day walk around the park type scenarios? That way you aren't worried about switching lenses too, and might be good for hiking, etc.

If I wanted to make the compromise what would be some good lenses to go with? I don't know if I want to jump into some high end lenses at this point, so what would be on par or better then those lenses, without breaking the bank? Ideally, a nice wide angle, then something like the DA* 16-50 and then the 50-135 would be nie, but that's a lot of money to spend haha. I have heard good things about the 17-70 though.

Would I be better off with the Tamron version over the pentax Version? Also, should I be looking to get a single lens solution like the 18-250, as I see some people talk about it being a bit soft wide open. Am I better off covering the range with a couple lenses? Back to the age old question I guess haha.

Hey All,
I have a pentax K20D, and at the moment, all I have is the 50mm prime f1.4. I'm looking for a new lens.

My initial thoughts were to get the 18-250 to find what range I shoot the most, and then get a better lens for that range eventually. The 18-250 is also an awesome lens for just a single lens solution when hiking etc.

However, I now am noticing it's been discontinued. I can get my hands on one still, but the question is should I? Or Should I be looking in another direction?

I thought the super zoom would be good for just an all around all purpose lens. Does anyone have recommendations on a this lens of another lens instead (pentax or otherwise)?

Thanks!

Awesome, thanks for the advice. I think Marc and yourself are saying the same sort of things, and I agree. I don't want to blow money, but at the same time, I'm trying to think about the most effective way to cover say wide angle/landscape all the way to 200 or so first. I want to buy good glass though, so F2.8 if possible. The issue I have is everyone highly recommends the 50-135, but then I would have nothing 135+. And it starts at 50. The 12-24 gives the nice wide angle, but then I guess I need something to cover the 20-50 range? Like you said a 17-70 could fill that.

Of course, I could just drop the 12-24 and go 16-50 and 50-135 DA*'s. I lose some wide end, but I'm not sure how much I'm losing that's the problem haha.

Marc, I agree and understand where you are coming from. As I'm newer to it, it might be just as easy to get the 18-250 and figure out what I need from there. In terms of this though, I was just interested to see what other people would do, or have done in building there lens system. Thanks for the advice, appreciate it, and I'll have to make some decisions.

Hey All, I've been starting to really look into lenses (perhaps a little LBA haha), and I've had a post on here about a good wide angle. That led me into some other discussions and thoughts. I did some reading and saw a recommendation of good setup to start with, so I was curious what every one thinks.

For the time being you can put money aside (or if you really want to include a price for performance lens feel free).

The setup I saw would be something like this:

12-24mm f4
50mm f1.4
50-135mm DA* f.28

And then grow the needed lenses from there. I realize there is a gap between 24 and 50, but that can be made up by moving the feet I think?
Just curious what your thoughts are on this setup, or what you would think a good "ideal" setup would be. Seems like the 50-135 is getting rave reviews, and is almost too good to pass up.

Right now I have 2 lenses: 50mm f1.4, and an Old Pentax SMC 135mm f.35 prime (My dad bought this in the late 70's).

So anyways, lets here what you all think is a great starting setup!

I hope to shoot landscapes/architecture, all the way to birds (which I can get fairly close to them as they are at bird feeders maybe 20 feet away).

Thanks for your thoughts! Remember this can be an ideal (go all DA* if you really want haha.)

Awesome thanks for the advice. I guess right now, I might be better off looking at the 16-50 or the 50-135 as my next lens, just need to decide which one I will use more right now!

Yeah I've been thinking, maybe it's better to eventually get something like the new 15mm ltd that's rumored, and still get some other good quality lenses. If that's the case though, then I got to decide if I'm better off getting the 16-50 or the 50-135 or something different to start? All I have is a 50 prime right now ahha.

Hmmmm...that's the way I was thinking. Of course, I think this is perhaps more of a lens buying thread in general now, since I'm thinking it might be good to pick up the 50-135mm and get like a 15mm ltd lens or something after.

I guess I would like to know at this point, what are the best pentax lenses? Say if you wanted to cover a lot of the range?

16-50, 50-135, ??

hmmm that's not a bad strategy, but right now I'm thinking it's nicer to buy good glass while I can afford too haha. I was thinking of eventually getting the 16-50 and the 50-135 for most of my needs. Although I've thought of the super zoom in the past, as it's a nice range.

Help Choosing a New Lens

Hey Everyone,
I recently picked up a K20D, and the 50mm prime lens, which is really nice. I've been learning with that.

Last weekend I went on a trip to the mountains, and discovered some limiting factors of the 50mm. Primarily landscapes and interior architecture shots. I love to shoot landscapes, and wildlife(I know completely different ball game lens wise), and was thinking of picking up a nice wide angle for the landscape shots.

However I'm unsure of what I should be going with.

12-24 - Seems limited but has the wide angle view.
16-50 - Not as wide, weather sealed, better range.
14mm prime - Not sure about this one. Seems nice.

Which would you all recommend? I'm new to this stuff so I don't really know. I've been going between the 12-24 and the 16-50.
Also, is there any Sigma or Tamron lenses I should consider?

Thanks!

Just around AF speeds and FPS. I don't think it will be an issue for me in all honesty. If I ever get major into it and shoot sports or something sort of thing, but I don't see that happening.

Thanks for the info on the settings asdf.

Hey All,
I'm new around here, so thought I'd put up a post to say hello!

I got a sweet deal from prodigital2000 as well, and my camera is on it's way. Should be here by next Tuesday at the latest!

I'm still sort of shocked I went with Pentax haah. When I first started looking, I only gave Nikon and Canon a serious look, and was on my way to buying a canon. A friend of mine at work owns a K10D, and taught me some stuff about pentax. I liked the idea of the weather sealed body, and the features you get for the price. Another co worker and I both bought K20D's at that point, and well here I am haha.

I figure it will be a good camera to start, and they cost significantly less then the Canon/Nikon's all around. I understand the limitations, but if one of those becomes a problem, I'll deal with switching at that point.

I picked up the 50mm 1.4 with a B+W UV filter, so now I'm just waiting on the camera! My dad has an old KX from the 70's and 2 lenses. He has an 18-55 and the 135mm F3.5 (Pentax Lens Review Database - 135mm F3.5).

I have a few questions though. I thought I read something about having to turn something on to use the older lenses properly? Also, I bought a sandisk Ultra 2 (15mb/s). Is that card good enough for this camera?

It's good to see the pentax numbers going up! I've noticed on these boards in my short time, new people buying cameras, and places like prodigital having a hard time keeping stock.

Anyways, sorry for the long post, thought I would say hi :).

I bought from them a couple weeks ago, got a good price as well! They had issues getting the order in from Pentax, and I was told the same customs thing, which is kind of annoying. It's on route to my house though! I trust them, and might buy a bag from them considering the prices!
