I guess your words about it being all but impossible to distinguish a print from a monochrome sensor compared to a color image processed as monochrome, and your assertion that a monochrome K3III might be useful only in an alternate universe scenario had me fooled.

**Everything** Ricoh has announced or done about these "workshop production model" cameras has unambiguously and unapologetically placed them in the domain of low production quantity specialty camera bodies. They are not designed for "most photographers." They are intentionally and specifically designed for "edge cases" and special situations.
I just don't get the purpose of bashing Ricoh for exploring the feasibility of a monochrome model in this context.

It's puzzling that one can insult most members of PF with this

This can be true if and only if you care about aperture and filter size and totally disregard all other lens attributes.

Interesting. Just curious how a lens correction profile can improve sharpness.

The Rico Imaging U.S. website shows 2.4 times as many K-mount primes under $1000 as above. I suspect that's good indication that the next released prime will be an f2.4 lens.

The AE RGB sensor cannot perform AF on it's own. It can, under the right conditions, identify where in the frame an eye is located. But it can't even say whether that eye is 2 meters or 2 kilometers away. It only knows the X-Y coordinate position of the eye within the frame. The PDAF system then uses the focus point* nearest the eye X-Y coordinate to determine distance and move the lens accordingly.
* I suppose it's possible for the PDAF module to find distance for multiple focus points near the eye, and then use some sort of average to set focus distance.

According to Ricoh, the brighter viewfinder image is owing to, in part, a high refractive index glass with lower reflection losses than in conventional prism glass. See the link in post 1 of this thread and also the features page of PENTAX K-3 Mark III - Ricoh, where they state:

What I find a bit surprising (in a good way) is that focus was recaptured following the out-of-focus frames (8 and to a lesser extent several others you listed); this recapturing of focus occurred several times in the sequence. Especially significant for the final few frames, as the relative focus distance change per frame increases as the subject gets closer to the camera. Or to put it another way, the change in focus distance per frame may be only 5% of the focus distance when the train is far away, while it may be 30% of the focus distance when the train is close, which seems more challenging for the AF system to get right.

Interesting. Apparently it uses a Linux bootloader called Stubby (I think U-boot is probably a more typical bootloader for embedded Linux). The Stubby readme file references the mb86s27 which is the 8th generation Milbeaut (Socionext) image processor. It supports full HD @ 120fps, 4K @ 30fps, H.264 codec - I guess that is already well-known.

I could never find a -12.5 diopter (no - that's not a typo) viewfinder lens for my K-5 IIs so I had to wear my coke-bottle-bottom glasses or contacts. A replacement lens in my eye courtesy of cataract surgery solved the problem! Just another option, though it may not be widely applicable. ;)

Interesting. If by "not using the SAFOX sensor anymore but the RBG sensor" you are saying the metering sensor completely replaces the PDAF sensor in K-new for autofocus duties, I'm not sure that all the bits of info we have so far add up to that conclusion.
Early images of the K-new with no lens installed apparently showed the reflection of a larger (than in K-3) PDAF sensor under the mirror box, implying a larger coverage area. The cutaway drawing showing the new prism arrangement also shows a large area below the mirror box - I don't see the purpose of that space if not for a PDAF sensor.
I think prior Pentax cameras used the metering sensor to assist autofocus in tracking objects (by color, maybe shape), essentially giving the system cues on which PDAF point to use as object moved across the frame. My take on this may be completely wrong.
The sensor in the patent seems to be a Foveon-like sensor. Maybe it can be used together with a PDAF sensor to enhance the AF system? Or maybe the patent is for a future camera's AF system? Anyway, I'd be surprised if K-new doesn't use PDAF. I have no idea if they'll call it SAFOX or something else. But this is all guesswork by me based on what I think I know - again I may be completely wrong.

I remember one of the first interviews conducted by PentaxForums with a Pentax executive from Japan. It seemed obvious to me that the executive, while appreciative of PentaxForums, was not all that familiar with what the forum was about. He seemed completely surprised to learn that PentaxForums had a virtually complete database of all Pentax lenses, for example.
The latest Ricoh financial reports https://www.ricoh.com/-/Media/Ricoh/Sites/com/IR/financial_data/financial_re.../q1_report.pdf show that for the year ended March, 2020, the "Other"* business unit category, sales for The Americas was about 2% of Domestic sales (2.9 vs. 150.4 billion yen). Europe, Middle East and Africa totaled about 3% of domestic sales.
Recognizing that Ricoh Imaging may just be a small part of "Other," and Pentax a small part of Ricoh Imaging, one cannot assume the 2% figure applies to Pentax brand. But I think there is a significant possibility that we PentaxForumites have an inflated view of how important we are to the Pentax brand.
* In the past, Ricoh Imaging (which includes Pentax brand) was part of "Other." I didn't see Ricoh Imaging referenced at all, but am assuming it's still part of "Other." If someone knows better, please correct me! |

From Ricoh's press release* on Jan. 26, 2017 announcing the KP, linked by kwp in post #138 of this thread:
1) The notation tagging the press release: Quote: New release of PENTAX KP, a middle-class digital single-lens reflex camera equipped with the new APS-C size sensor 2) The title of the press release: Quote: Middle class digital SLR camera equipped with new APS-C size sensor 3) The first paragraph right after pictures of the KP: Quote: Ricoh Co., Ltd. (President: Zenji Miura) and Ricoh Imaging Co., Ltd. (President: Noboru Akabane) have a compact body that can be carried around every day, high basic performance that supports full-scale production, and photographers and shooting scenes. We are pleased to announce the release of the PENTAX KP, a middle-class digital single-lens reflex camera with a variety of customization functions to suit your needs. Ricoh Co. president and Ricoh Imaging Co. president both clearly and without ambiguity identified the KP's place in the Pentax line-up with no bumbling, before any outrage, before the camera was sold.
Unfortunately, Ricoh USA executives waffled on the issue, but they only distribute product. I'm not sure why we give so much weight to what Ricoh USA folk said in interviews vs. what company officials who planned, designed, and brought the KP to market actually wrote about it.
