CameraLensRentals.com is planning on having them in stock. I'd be using one today if the roll out hadn't been so abysmal.

From your link: The average time that YouTube users are watching videos on mobile devices is 40 minutes

What an amazing success. We've managed to get twice as many kids to watch almost a whole hour of TV. This supports my point: measuring individuals by individual head count does not measure success of a product. YouTube is still losing money and still trying to understand why having a lot of people consume your product without giving you money back is a bad thing. Unlike cable, YouTube costs YouTube for every single bit they send.

Absolutely a different beast between being able to theoretically bring home a living for a single person rather than being the "future of television". It's more "public access TV" with the absolute best getting close to late night cable numbers occasionally. No one said you can't market that way. It's definitely not the future of television because the budgets don't work for anything other than short infotainment pseudo news.

Poll: A Pentax Video Camera?

I'm not sure digital video cameras are going to be a thing that exists within twenty years. We used to need them because we needed tapes and autofocus and audio, and you traded quality in lenses and sensors for those features. Now you don't trade and there's no logical need to. Now days, a video back is a still back with a high framerate and audio, and a camera back is a video back with a hotshoe.

I think it's more likely we'll see someone introduce a high performance jack to record from a DSLR to tape than for any of the DSLR manufacturers pursuing a video body that isn't ALSO a superior still body. They are gaining too much ground on the camcorders as it is. I don't think they switch gears, I think they win the war.

I see this claim a lot, but then I read articles citing how most of those channels aren't making any money at all, and I'm fairly confident I know what the problem is. Views is a meaningless statistic without demographics, and while I know the plural of anecdote isn't "statistics" I've personally concluded that phones as electronic baby sitters explains why millions of views still don't mean anything. When the average person clicking view over and over again is 10 or less and just entertained by the noises and droning of the voices, it's hard to call that "television". Even the demographics they release don't mean anything, because every kid that watches gets counted as one of their parents, since officially they aren't allowed to be watching it at all. Youtube itself hasn't figured out how to monetize it and barely can break even. It's babysitting more than TV.

I need to make sure CameraLensRentals gets a copy of the 150-450. That's probably the only way I'll ever touch one. I wonder if my local rental/camera shop would let me rent to own?

I hope the message they take away is that they aren't quite penetrated into the full on mass market, and their primary users are largely a little TOO satisfied with their product, and require large changes to motivate us.

Also, some of us apparently think men have fat fingers with very little grip strength.

I hope you don't mind me taking a second to rant first. How, in this day and age, is it acceptable to pay for "2nd Business Day" and have UPS deliver it at 6:50pm? Don't they know what they DID to me all day?

Since the sun was down, I went with my favorite "go-to" exposure and focusing stress test. I present, "Sleeping Black Dog Facing Away From CFL Lamp"

I also attached the camera's version.

Frustrated With My K-7 (Blurry Muck)

Yeah, except that's absolutely, positively, camera shake. The root cause may be up for debate, but that image is the victim of camera rotation. Heaven help us too, because it went all Oliver North. When the image started, the lens was up and to the right. Taking the picture rotated it down, and to the left.

Might be defective SR, may be after image from red eye reduction flash.

It's still captured camera movement.

I think there's a somewhat noticeable haze around the copula in this shot: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/members/slowdive101-albums-k-7-blur-pictu...836-detail.jpg

However, what it looks like to me is someone discovering they can pixel peep just THAT much closer in their new higher resolution pixels, and discovering the calamity that pixel peeping can bring.

The fact that it's shot at 1/60, and in a HDR sequence says two things to me:

1) You shot it too slow, and there's some motion blur from the bang bang bang of the shutter
2) You only KNOW it's got a tiny tiny bit of motion blur, because you're looking at it ridiculously close.

*Edit*

Incidentally, I'd like to the see the bracketed shots, because to me there remains the possibility that it's front focused slightly (resulting in a depth of field that mostly looks like it takes up the space BETWEEN the chapel and the branches)

So uh, just as a casual question, for no particular reason, anyone know off the top of their head how long, roughly, before the K-x broke the $500 mark retail?

That seems like such a beautiful camera, and maybe I can justify by telling my girlfriend SHE needs it to take pictures and video of the puppies we're about to get...

I feel strongly that all of you should support Sigma's interest in Pentax by buying this lens as soon as it's available in a K-mount. Then one of you needs to scratch the body superficially, declare it destroyed, and sell it at a fraction of the price used to me.

The weaknesses of K-5 - what do you think?

I hate to sound all fan boy and negative at the same time, but the K-5, from reading the spec sheet at least, looks like someone from Pentax came over here right after the K-x came out, saw that everyone that got a K-7 seems to mostly love them, with a few exceptions. Then they saw those same people saying they'd be thrilled with the K-7 with a few envelopes pushed out a little farther, and the K-x quality high ISO, and they said, "Sounds good to us", and used that to spec out the K-5.

I'm pretty satisfied with my K-7, and I'd hate to give myself buyer's remorse this far out, but I have to admit the K-7 is starting to look like the prototype for the K-5, and was just the first stable version, rather than the K-5 being an extension of the K-7.

Potential ka-bosh on Pentax FF in the near future due to Sony rumor?

FF sensors aren't getting better and cheaper, from what I can see in the consumer market, any faster than EVIL is getting higher quality. I'd be shocked if APS-C dies, and if it dies, it won't be killed from the FF side, it'll be killed from the smart phone side.

There's just a huge difference between how a serious enthusiast or professional, and your average "camera user" takes pictures, and thinks about their equipment.

FF you need a bag for, and the camera needs to be comfortably sized to balance the weight of heavy glass, grips, flashes, accessories.

EVIL you need to fit in your existing bag, and the camera needs to be comfortably sized to fit in your existing life.

The megabyte vs megapixel race is already becoming an issue for the generic consumer, the generic consumer doesn't give a crap about the exposure triangle as long as the camera has good default settings; these two market segments just don't conflict as much as people are acting like they do.

Photokina 2010, Pentax and the full frame mystery

It's should be about maximizing long term profits, not short term profits. Capitalism only WORKS when everyone is attempting to maximize their LONG term profits, because it's the most profitable, long term, for everyone to make what they are best at making in a natural monopoly, and no negative effects can occur because everyone controls everyone else's supply chain. In a non-utopian dreamworld, though, it's still best to maximize long term profitability, which involves BOTH protecting the strength of the brand AND improving the quality of the product, while effectively marketing it, and pricing appropriately.

Short term rush to market high profit items can be short term wins and long term economic anchors, if you cannibalize your good will and product qualities for those windfall profits.

They've got to do both. They NEED to establish themselves as a "safe" choice for new camera buyers. You have to have a customer base to make profits because you can maximize them, of course. They also NEED to market to the high end and keep long term loyal repeat customers buying, and establish their new customers as evolving repeat customers.

Well, don't forget his nonleaks are leaks, too! I mean, this thread is basically, "Confirmation: K-5 is model spec'd above K-7, but not FF", only written backwards with a few more details thrown in :)

But as to your other comment, you almost never damage yourself by investing in a new body, if you can afford the opportunity cost. I can think of a few groups that "lost" features moving to a new body, particularly astronomers, but not many. You'll only be upset if that means not buying a new model in the near future, but with resale value being what it is on cameras, it's not such a big deal unless you break it.

What does matter is how you spend money on lenses. An announcement of FF in the near future could be damaging to the sales of any DA lens that doesn't cover the full frame circle, and the FA line would get a little boost in it's demand. That's where the real decisions should be made. Are you currently willing to invest in a lens that doesn't cover the full frame circle?

I don't personally see myself as an early adopter if a FF was released, but I still don't currently want to buy any lens that CAN'T be used if I do.

I have to admit, I'm starting to get curious whether different people just flat out hold their camera differently, but everyone more or less acts like there's only one way for the trigger hand to be there. Personally, I like having my pink under the camera. I haven't used a grip often, but when I have, I feel like the thing is slowly trying to torque out of my hand from not having my pinky steadying it. After I thought about it, I absentminded went to pick up my drink, and realize I do the same thing with cups, too.

I only mention it, because I wonder how many various ways of holding the camera there actually are, and if comfort level has as much to do with hand positioning as it does actual grip and hand size.

Pentax EVIL is comming!!!

Completely agree, Pentax Enthusiasts generally have three answers for the question, "Why Pentax?" That's the critical question any company needs to solve. It would seriously blow my mind if Hoya believes the answers to the question "Why Pentax?" are significantly different, or SHOULD be significantly different, than the three answers you'll see most commonly:

1. Performance for price
2. Excellent legacy glass
3. That Pentax cameras have a certain "feel" and behavior that's extremely consistent between their film and digital lines

They took pride and made it public that their image quality settings (particularly noise reduction and saturation), the layout of their menus, how the dials look and feel, all that, for their digital lines had the absolute mandate to make it "feel" like their film cameras, to the point where people brought up on cartoony blobby Canon and Nikon point and shoot digitals think Pentax cameras are "dull" and have to be taught what dynamic range is for, and how to meter properly for the results they want.

I don't know if that's the "right" decision, but it's the decision that made me fall in love with my hand my down film Pentax right up until it was stolen, then in love with my 110D, right up until it was stolen, and then in love with my K20D and my K-7 (you know, until in the near future someone steals those, too).

It seems like such a limited subset of users who care the most about size, in either direction. We can't even get a decent consensus here over whether FF is important, or if EVIL is needed at all. If Pentax had more market share, they could fit all niches. Currently, they need to focus on their core, even if means losing people on the edges. It looks to me like they've correctly identified the K-7 and the K-m winners, so much so they quickly brought out the K-x to capitalize on the K-m's popularity, and hit it out of the park.

Now, I really, really hope they are following that up with an EVIL system I can buy for my girlfriend, and share lenses with her. I honestly believe that'd be more or less the goal of this camera. It seems to me that it's for people switching lenses, getting their first "real" camera, and as a companion camera for families with wives/husbands/children where a Pentax camera is already owned, and it'd be an excellent low space backup option for emergencies.

And hopefully I'll be able to get it for her in Carolina Blue, so she'll be happy.

Incidentally, protip for you guys out there: A K-7 with a FA 35mm fits EXCELLENTLY in a Coach purse, and giving her a Coach purse is an excellent way to get her to carry your camera in public.

Hotshoe replacement after fall
Posted By Mister Guy

My Metz 58 was attached to a super clamp that was more or less loosely hanging off an expensive wood framed mirror last night and took a nasty tumble when the clamp lost it's grip (I didn't have tightened to protect the wood). The hotshoe seat on the flash had both the little side plastic "fins" snap off when it hit the ground and the clamp and hotshoe adapter went one way and the flash went another.

Question: Think it's fixable, and worth fixing?

It's a $400 flash, which isn't a CRITICAL amount of money, but it's the second time I've replaced a flash in a year. The first one exploded at a wedding, ironically after being smashed falling from an unweighted light stand. I don't know if the Metz warranty will cover poor choices on my part.

When I get home tonight, I'm going to try duct taping the flash directly to the shoe, as a temporary measure, but looking at the flash, it looks like a part that should be replaceable. I'm going to talk to the local camera shop later today, but I've never needed to get anything repaired before so I'm not sure if it'll be worth it.

Helpful suggestions, mockery?-

That's not actually what I was referring to. It's currently, in the US, not legal for the two largest single consumers of medications in the world to negotiate bulk discounts. That has a major impact on the cost of medicines.

Actually, not really. You're getting a significantly better value for your money now with cell phones. Cell phones are a somewhat odd commodity in that, like prescription drugs, the entire world's market is subsidized indirectly by the American consumer getting shafted. Cell phones were extremely expensive for very limited functionality until someone came up with the idea of bundling phone discounts to contracts. My first cell phone was several hundred dollars retail, had to be screwed into an external antenna (optional external car antenna!), and was attached to a bag that contained the battery. It was a BIG DEAL (tm) because the bag could function outside of the car, unlike other car phones which had to be wired directly into the car's electrical systems.

Once someone came up with the idea of bundling the phone right to the contract, the cost of ownership was just relocated, hidden along the length of the contract rather than paid up front. You never directly saw it unless you tried to cancel and were hit with the cost of the phone in addition to cancellation fees.

Now, mostly due to European influence and prepaid temporary phones, the American consumer is getting wise to the idea that contracts are almost never in your best interest, and the provider with a long locked in contract is not a provider that cares deeply about your happiness with them. So now the costs are swinging back the other way, and more people pay the actual retail cost for their phone. It'd be hard to say phones are more expensive though, since now you can get a Droid with unlimited talk and minutes for much less upfront AND much less per month than you used to get with the crappy analog bag phones.

Fiat and Pentax

Actually, I'd say it makes perfect sense. It looks expensive and impressive, it's recognizable as a camera, and it's very "sexy" looking for a camera, with the sleek black and shine that emphasizes the interior of the car. To me, it makes me think the message they want to send is that the Fiat is a car for people who want to be efficient and practical, but still sleek and more expensive than it looks. I think they are going for the message that they understand their drivers tend to be alone in the car, and would appreciate being able to secure valuable things without tossing them on the floor.

I think it's a good idea and a good way to send that message.
