Here's the tight frame up of the previously posted turbines shot. That is Mt. Diablo's best side, IMO. Montezuma Hills

Jim,
thanks for the reminders. I've sat in 8 hr rolling parking lots headed to Lake Tahoe and Yosemite during snowstorms and such. I know the drill. I won't have my own well-equipped overlanding truck, however, but a borrowed car, but should manage no less. Kerrville/Fredericksburg promises to be a cluster so I'm aiming for Uvalde or Eagle Pass instead. Will have self sustaining quantities of supplies, no worries...and I can pee in a Big Gulp cup too.

Just saw the thread and throwing in my hat as well. I bought a ticket to Austin, and will attempt to drive somewhere along the path of totality with my gear in tow. Who knows what will happen with all those people on the narrow Texas highways.

I will be following your thread with earnest, Fred. Thank you for sharing your planning.
I'll be flying from CA to TX and may be limited in what gear to bring, so I haven't figured out exactly what is coming with me. Likely my K3ii with a 600mm lens and solar filter.
Good luck and keep sharing your experience.

Tim sorry to hear that. How do you know the SDM has given up the ghost for good?
My copy of this lens gets used once a year maybe. As such, it is always dead but I do the reviving procedure and sometimes after a very long time, it starts working again.
I have a hunch you own a whole shelf of fast '50s, and I think the cost to repair is not worth it.
Good luck.

A wave of low fog surrounds the peak of Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County, CA. This is a 20 sec exposure at f/11 to coax out a sunstar. If you look carefully, you may spot a photographer in the foreground.
Lens is the DFA 55mm f/2.8 on the 645Z. This is a 2-frame composite: the sun has been manually blended from a frame captured minutes earlier. Exposure of the foreground trees has been increased to reveal details. Some dodging of the trees was applied.
Hope you like it!

$300 won't get you much improvement in a tripod head, I'm afraid, but after dealing with similar issues with largest tele lens(600mm on 645Z), I have adopted a process that greatly reduces the rotational vibration of the standard single point of contact tripod head.
I cant share the pics off my phone in here but I mount the tele lens to the lens collar, and then I attach a lightweight monopod to the camera body. Once I've framed my shot, I loosen the lowest leg of the monopod to make contact with the ground. There is no need to tighten the leg collar(s) of the mono, because it immediately stabilizes the system. I use a $100 monopod, nothing more than that and my results are much improved.
As others have mentioned, a sandbag(beanbag) over the mirror box(lens mount) area of the camera is helpful. I also incorporate an umbrella to shield my rig from the wind, and I have those viscoelastic isolation discs on each tripod foot (when shooting astro). I also have a hammock device for hanging stones/sandbag from the center hook of the tripod, as long as there is no wind.
All this can become unwieldy, so I usually select the mitigation tools that will yield the best result for the challenge at hand.
Good luck!!
EDIT to add snap of my monopod + tripod setup. The additional contact on the ground has improved my tele shots significantly.

thanks, but i wasnt suggesting i was looking for different plates. I prefer the allen set plates because they never ever come loose, even by accident. The plates remain on the camera at all times.

Can you specify which 645 body you have? ---------- Post added 12-29-23 at 09:13 AM ---------- For my 645Z, I am using a pair of Hejnar PHOTO H017 and they have the locator pins that fit the 645Z perfectly. These are beautifully machined and require an allen wrench to tighten (no twistable thumb ring).

I have a non-working 540 unit that I was planning to repair. If you need this part, PM me an offer and it may be worth my while to sell it to you.
I hope that's helpful. Good luck
