Retrospectively, competitions do us good. These military specification were later industrialised to offer the controlling unit in GPS, cell phones, camera sensors, MRI, solar cells, just to name a few. Think how much the ability to communicate between us on this forum was from this mouse. :)

Small rant! Photography course at University.

Your friend’s University is being irrational regarding the use of camera in a photography course. They don’t really ask you to bring your camera during enrolment, right? Then I would simply enrol and turn to class with whatever camera you have by that time (even if that means a 2MP 1st generation compact) because it is photography, not mechatronics. Any decent photography lecturer wouldn’t make such a claim on specific brand choice.
If next the university requires every student to each have a 400mm f2.8 to shoot wildlife and mirror lens are not allow because it doesn’t make a nicer bokeh, would you go and buy one? (haha, I know a lot of you would, just being waiting for an excuse to acquire one for long)
It could well be a claim from someone without proper authorities, a mild complaint to the school or facility should resolve it.
So, which Brisbane University is this? Have you got a link to the photography course prerequisite?

There is a second part to your story though. With all the money invested to develop the technologies for a pen to work in space, and it finally did. The scientists were able to extract new theorems and methods from during this development that controls fluidity and regulates flow dynamics under zero gravity. These new discoveries later lead to further advancement to a new generation of recording apparatuses, while the Russians remained at the age of pencils.

I think the buyer used a stolen CC or something. According (to paypal), I've sent the item too quick for them to realise (like after 2 days!).

Oh and FYI, Paypal have the power (and they will) lock your paypal accounts whenever they want without warning (no matter when amount of balance you have in there). And they will only unlock them for as long as you send them whatever information they need from you which includes business registration, inventory account information, etc, etc.

When I was an ebay seller, my account was lock with ~AU$1000.00 in it for about 3 months, only did they release it after I sent them more than 10 documents. I gaveup my ebay selling business after that because I had other things to do and it wasn't worth it.

Do a google search about paypal freuds and you'll know what I mean. They have a great wall of lawsuits lined up with businesses in court. I now empty every cent in that account!

Enough said, just beware people!

I think many people thought the same before buying their first * or ltd, and many will stand to justify their buy and so would you one day. :)

IMHO,
If you’re are a photographer, then it’s a placebo effect (you’re busier worrying about your composition than sharpness). Whereas if you’re a shopper/ shopaholic, then it’s a measurebation effect (you’ll be concern about your sharpness than to take pictures). I’m a hybrid.

I reckon the kit lens is the best lens for landscapes, as you wouldn’t go under 5.6 anyway. But for the rest of the game (i.e. indoor, wildlife, portrait) the low the F the better, because you need all the speed you can and + a stop down to escape the wide open softness.

I got a reply from the seller and he will send the step ring first thing tomorrow. :) , resolved!

And well, like all issues, people stand on positions they most advantage from. Who doesn't?

My little mentality thinks that there is no absolute about anything (the statement itself included). Peace.

For windows (not sure whether its the same with mac)
Under layer -
Add new adjustment layer -
Channel mixer

then double click the layer mixer and you get a output channel of red/ green/ blue.

I've only done this once and couldn't get it (the colour and surreal like feel) right yet. Will start taking somemore IR pictures when and if my step-ring arrives as mention on my other thread. :)

Man, that is quite unfortunate and it wasn't cheap.

I had a somewhat different experience where I sold something (expensive) on ebay and the buyer paid by paypal. As soon as I sent the item, the balance bounced. I've never recovered the money from paypal, they refused to protect sellers.

Good luck with it. Hope you get your money back.

Hey Jus_us101,

I’m new to IR photography too. Let me sum up what I’ve read so far. And for those experienced, please correct me if I’m wrong.

What you saw was exactly what I saw, basically nothing are seen through the viewfinder because it took out all EM waves under 720nm or less (in other words all colour light).

Metering is slight more accurate with multi –spot, but it’ll still be underexposure, only way to check is by checking image with LCD after each shot.

IR are usually done on landscape, hence focusing is usually at infinity.

Greater than 5 sec exposures are normal for landscape even at bright sunlight condition. So, again meaning that portraits will be quite hard for subjects to keep still, not recommended.

Use lower ISO to reduce noise.

Make sure WB is correctly set before you take the image. And take image in RAW.

PP is necessary if you are not doing B&W or if you don’t want a red only image.

Following are the step for PP in PS.
1. Load the already auto level (colour and contrast) JPG (converted after RAW) to PS
2. Apply a channel mixer (under adjustment layer)
3. In red channel – set red to 0% and blue to 100%
4. In blue channel – set blue to 0% and red to 100%
5. Play around with the 3 channel combinations until you are satisfy with your image

The end

Ya, my 82mm lens wide have a smaller front element that shouldn't matter with 77mm filters and my other most used lens is 77mm too.

The seller just offered a solution of using a step ring (but I wasn't aware of the typical confusion Slomojoe mentioned, I guess that was the case with the seller as well).

But after all, I had the choice to accept or not. I just didn't think much for as long as it'll work.

So yep, there are plenty of lessons out there to reminder buyer cautious. Lesson learned.

Thanks people :)

K mount lens to a telescope?

That is one big lens! Man, I wish I could afford one and a place to accommodate it. But so much light pollution in suburban Sydney

I had the macro extension tubes in mind before this post and tested it to see whether it’ll fit with the 2” end of a 2” to 1.25” adaptor. My macro tubes have about ~60mm ID, so there remains a gap for this setup.

Yep, once the adaptors are in place, we could simply add rings of extension tube for right focus.

But IMHO, lens coats are by far more superior than telescope ones?
Although they wouldn’t have as much light gathering power, but in terms of CA, shouldn’t they outperform single lens spotting scope in daylight?
Is that 500mm a cheaper generic brand? (That’s similar to the setup I had in mind)
As for the good quality of the 70-210mm, that is exactly what I wanted but not a permanent fix setup. Whereas an adaptor that can be mount to ANY lens for a quick conversion to a telescope.
If one adaptor is the price of a cheap spotting scope, having it would double the use of your lens collection than just photos, right?

Cheers.

A little ebay seller issue

Hey People,

I recently brought a 77mm IR filter from ebay for a 82mm lens. Before I made the purchase, I've check with the seller whether a 82mm was available, but they didn't have it. So instead they offered me a 77mm with a free stepup ring 77-82mm. Which is fine for me so I took it.

Now they sent me the IR filter but with a wrong stepring for 82-77mm, which is the other way around. I've contacted them about this and they now wants me to send the wrong stepup ring back before they'll exchange for the right one.

For me, it'll cost as much to sent it back then to make another buy. This is actually my first bad experience with online buying, couldn't have guess it with a power seller.

My question is, should I just leave them a bad comment or crop it?
What would you do?

I think you should give him your k100 and buy yourself a k200 or better for him, buy him a k200 and a lens of his choice.

I mean, he doesn't use a camera for living now, does he? Wait until he does and then he'll buy a camera with more functions with his hard earn money!

Making things easy for him is good, but thinking for him is better!

Indeed. For the same quality from another brand would simply cost 3 times this price.

A nobrainer's choice.

X2, the 200mm ain't the best second lens on the list. A 50-135 is more pratical and you're likely to take more photos with it (well, if your main interest is not solely wildlife).

Check out your shooting habits to decide what suits.

Anyhow, whatever you decide, enjoy your new lens and don't forget to share some shots and experience with us.

ExposurePlot
ExposurePlot (former Focalplot)

It checks all the photos in a directory for EXIF information.

Focal length/ ISO/ apecture/ shutterspeed distribution graph for number of times used.

Good to know about your photography habits and decide what lens to buy next.

But it can only read JPEG not DNG.

Oh, ya, sorry I was referring to a telescope eyepiece (barrel diameter of 1.25"). There are plenty of eye relief ranges for them (for as low as 5mm to as high as 25mm). There are even those with zooms (8-24mm).

Such as:
Super Zoom Plossl Eyepiece 8-24mm 1.25" Telescope New - eBay, Telescopes, Binoculars Telescopes, Photography. (end time 16-Feb-09 09:00:00 AEDST)

As for custom design and drill work. I only wish I have that experience on metal work and know how.

Cheers.

K mount lens to a telescope?

Ya, no camera. I'm not/ dont want to take any photos with the lens. If I were taking photos, then I'll connect my camera (dSLR) to a T-mount then to my telescopes (8" Newtonian or 2" refractor) and a tracking equatorial mount/ GPS tracker OR connect my telescopes to a T-mount and to an eyepiece holder tube and to my camera (compact). I have all the above setups.

But my aim is to be able to convert all my K-mount lens to different telescopes!

Correct me if I'm wrong, isn't a slr lens (tele/ super tele) already half of a telescope (i.e. the objective piece). So to make a full telescope, one would need to add an eyepiece at a calculated length to create a projectable real/ inverted image?

Any idea?

Thanks

That's right! Is that possible or had I got my theories mix up? I'm no optics expert, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hm, not sure whether there is another way of doing it. Could they be done by connecting to the front element end?

Converting a lens to a telescope.

It should be like this

1. (filter tread in mm/ front) Lens (male K-mount/ back)

connect to back of 1

2. adaptor (female K-mount/ front) converter (1.25"ID eyepiece holder/ back)

connect to back of 2

3. 1.25" eyepieces of various sizes for different magnification

That functions like a spot scope.

I think my 70-300mm could give me some high magnification with a 8mm or lower eyepiece. The only thing I'm unsure is whether it'll focus at infinity.

Thanks

Thats right. Seen or heard of them?

Many Thanks.

Thanks for the link you send. There was actually a picture of a similar item I wanted, but just couldn't find a place that sell them.

Hey, thanks for that.

But for one that is female K mount on one side and 1.25" on the other side, have you seen them before?

I did try looking on ebay but only found m42 treads, which I already got.

I also use T-mounts and adaptors for putting my camera on telescopes, but try out all combination and couldn't get my lens to stick to an eyepiece.

I'll pass on the duct tap and drilling holes to body cap method please!

So a direct link of where I can order one is nice.

Many Thanks.
