Depending on when any potential development was started, there is a good chance that the chosen components are simply no longer available. There were quite a few components that became "end of life" during or because of the lockdowns. That doesn't help Pentax with the long development schedule they have chosen these days.
An effect of that is the k-3 mkIV could be further along in development then the k-1 mkIII, even if the k-1 started development years ago. Hard to tell though. But getting either, or better yet both, would be a good sign for the brand. Hopefully this is a good sign, if it is true.

It should be noted that that article is generally considered dated today. It is based on the Nikon d300 which used an old AF system Even at the time of the article. Cameras have long had the usage of f2.8 sensors allowing the advantage of their use. Again not talking about how fast a lens focuses, but wether the system has to hunt or can even achieve a focus lock in lower light conditions.
P.s. actual result variations on a camera by camera implementation basis.

This does not have anything to do with the AF sensors light collecting. That's about circles of confusion. It will likely limit accuracy, but more light will still always be better. A sensor needs light to focus and faster apertures do give more light. It's not like f/5.6 is a quantity of light like saying 100 lux. So a fast aperture lens will focus better in low light, all other things being equal. And that's even true for a less sharp lens. A faster aperture will focus in less light than a slower aperture all other things equal. Whether that's a need or want for you is a personal decision, but it is still a fact.

That tripod foot is oddly heavy, lol, and you still have to mount a plate to it.
Options, options are always good. Though I do tend toward the big star lenses these days.

That's a question Pentax would have to answer, but it could at least go DC. It would seemingly be nice to see at least the the premium lenses be updated to DC and PLM. I think they have proven to be robust at this point. I've at least not seen as many issues with PLM and DC over the years as I have for SDM. There have been far more SDM lenses though, so it could just be a percentage issue.
And I think that this is a fantastic focal range for portraits or kids sports on apsc. I have to swap lenses quite a bit when my kids are doing baseball and soccer, but it seems like a tend to mostly stay in the 50-135mm zone on my k-3, since I'm right on the sidelines. I'm using the dfa 24-70mm and dfa 70-200mm right now. They are great, but do mean swapping back and forth quite a bit. I just need a K-1 mk3 to come out and I'll upgrade to fix that issue I guess :D

Are you using pure raw 3 or 4? Version 4 seems to do much better with deepprime xd2. I haven't upgraded to it yet, but it's my plan too from all the reviews I've seen.

My first slr was an ME Super. I got it for free for helping someone clean their shop. It was in a box full of craft supplies, glitter and sequin type stuff. I had to do a full tear down of it to clean it up and get it working. I loved it until the shutter bit the dust. I ended up replacing it with a Super Program and I think I liked it more than the ME Super. I still use the Super Program and think of it as a daily driver type of camera, not the finest but it will do its job without a fuss. In 2008 I "caved" and picked up an LX. As is typical for an LX that hasn't been CLAed it needed some work. It didn't have sticky mirror syndrom, but it had the presigns of it and couldn't focus to infinity. Thankfuly Eric still serviced them at the time and did a great job with it. Its been my baby ever since. I haven't used a finer manual focus camera. It just feels right when used. I also thankfuly haven't had any issues with it or the winder I also got for it. I did eventually replace the leatherette on it and the winder with the leica style from aki-asahi, and thats just the icing on the cake as it were.
In that vein though, micro electronics of that vintage just have problems and its just a matter of time until any/all of the electric cameras from the 80s fail due to electronics. All that said, I run my LX as primary and the super program as secondary film cameras.

I'm not sure this has anything to do with pentax' ability to create an f1.2 or larger aperture lens, remember they were able to produce a 50mm f1.2. Now I could be wrong and the mount isn't able to have a f1.2 85mm lens because of constrants however it becomes increasingly easier to have a larger aperture as a lens gets down into the lower mm ranges. So a 30mm f1.0 lens may be doable. In the end I don't think that the size of the back eliment matters as much as that of the front. Most of what the back eliments job is is to cast a viewing circle large enuff to cover the sensor. this of course is a simplified description and there is more that it does. I don't think that it is quite that important in the creation of a lens with a large aperture because as far as light goes, a lens acts as a condenser. they take a large amount of light spread over a big area and condense into a smaller area a little larger than the thing that will be collecting the light, the exception to this being fish eye lenses in that they don't cover the whole censor; remember trying to burn things with a magnifying glass?
well that just what my physics class taught me any way, well that and my $0.02.

Well here is my contribution. They are all shot using my superprogram and smc-a 50mm lens.
This one is shot using TMX 100.
These next two are shot using Adox CMS 20 film. I really like the stuff.
The scanner I was using made that last one just a little contrasty, to me that is.

Well here I sit being just short of 21 one and I have been shooting a Pentax for the past six or so years. I had always wanted an SLR but never had the money for one; tended to spend the money I did have on pop and such :D. One day I was helping my pastor move and found an MESuper that he told me was broke and he said that I could have it. I took it home turned it into a pile of parts and found out that the shutter was full of sequins . I cleaned it up, put it back together, and used it untill last year when the electronics gave out. I now use an LX "my dream 35mm camera," a SuperProgram, and a K10D. Guess I just like the brand ;)
I was always brought up with the thought that Pentax, Nikon, Olympus, and Minolta thrown in for good measure. Canon of the cheap brand... It's amazing how things have changed over the years though.
