Thanks so much for your quick reply. Looks like I will have to give this one a try. A good pTTL flash adds new life to these old cameras. Thanks again!

Does anyone know if a Godox TT350P Mini Thinklite TTL Flash Speedlite Compatible Pentax Cameras 645Z K-3II K-1 KP K-50 K-S2 K70 would also work with older Pentaxes such as a Pentax K20D or K200D? These pttl flashes are REALLY economically priced, and I would like to get one for my K20D (or K200D).

Long time since I used my K200D. Took it out tonight with a DFA 100mm Macro and AF160 FC Ringflash.

Another old school guy here. If I were doing Europe I would want to go wide, and light. Keep the Kr, great IQ in a small, lightweight camera. For those narrow streets and architecture, I would go wide and buy lightweight pancake primes. Probably, my kit would be the 15, the 21 and the 40mm pancakes. Nothing more. Boy, would that be a pleasurable trip... lightweight kit and awesome photos. (I've been out of the loop for awhile: I'm assuming those pancakes are still available).

And when you do upgrade your camera body, you will still have those awesome pancakes. You will never grow tired of them.

Canikon Fanboys

HEAR HEAR! The enthusiastic guy with the all-purpose zoom was me years ago. My first dSLR, a k200D with a DA 18-250 lens on it! I was in heaven, and took it to show off to my new camera club members (mostly Canon and Nikon types) and they patiently examined my camera and commented on how beautiful it was and how I made a good choice... nothing but words of encouragement and support. I think probably this person wasn't a "Canikon fanboy" being aggressive with his particular brand choice... he was just thrilled with his gear and was probably sharing his enthusiasm.

I have since learned that the brand on the gear doesn't mean much. All are capable of producing photos that are works of art. And for what it's worth, the best photo I ever took was with the DA 18-250. It isn't super sharp, and it's a bit noisy, but it captures the sheer emotion shared by a woman and her Arabian horse. A lucky shot for sure. But it just goes to show you.

And not all Canon types are smelly, you know.:D

I'm reading great things about the KS-2, and if my K200D ever bit the dust, I would buy one of those (but my K20D would also have to die, and it never will).

To articulate or not to articulate

I have been using tilt/swivel articulating screens for years (Canon S5IS, G12, G1X, 60D, T5i) and not one of them has ever failed or broken, even when dropped. They are extraordinarily useful for on-the-ground macros, over-the-head shots, and life savers for old backs and knees like mine. A few years back, I reluctantly left Pentax for Canon when I realized that Pentax was never going to build a dSLR with such a feature. If the Pentax FF has an articulating touch screen I will come rushing back to Pentax with checque book wide open! BTW, I have never used the flip-out touch for selfies. Not all who love articulating screens are narcissists. Well, let's just say that not all narcissists take selfies!

OEM battery vs clone

I've had plenty of problems with clones for my Canons, but never with clones for my Pentaxes.

So, these days, I tend not to buy clones for anything, especially batteries. It's more expensive, but if I am going to pay a lot of money for a body, I don't want to cripple it with cheaper knockoffs of anything when OEM equipment is available.

What lens for K200D to buy?

I have never used the DA50mm, but it has the reputation of being a terrific macro lens. I use the DA35mm Macro (older version) a lot, and rave about it. There was a thread on the "Lens Club" forum about the 35mm. Some say ('some' includes non Pentax fanatics too) that the 35mm Limited Macro is the best lens that Pentax ever produced, right up there with the DA 15mm. I don't have the 15, but the 35 is the best lens that I ever bought. I use it for regular photography too. (I share your esteem for the Canon 100mm f2.8 also, it is one of Canon's very best lenses, and a true bargain to boot).

Here is the 35 on a K200D

Pentax vs Canon

It's the sensor. Same one that is in the K10D. I prefer the K200Ds color rendition to the K20's using the same glass. There has never been another sensor like it, and because I rarely shoot higher than ISO 100 (I am always on a tripod), photos from the K200D trump photos from any other camera I have ever taken. There is a thread on the glories of the K200D in this forum, and another on the K10D. The photos are well worth looking at. Old equipment still shines, IMO, which is why I will not be in the market for a long, long time. Well, except that I am looking at a 6D, and a 5DIII, Old sensors, right? LOL :o

Pentax vs Canon

The Canon 100mm f2.8 macro (the cheapest non-L and non-IS) is superb. Period. Go here to see many pages of photos taken with it. Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM - Canon Digital Photography Forums The Canon 17-55 2.8 is a non-L lens (it is made for APSC sensors) but its build quality and image quality are superb. There are lots of other excellent Canon lenses that are non-L and sell for very reasonable prices: a pancake 40mm, a 50mm Macro (f2.5) which also doubles as a regular 50mm with 1:2 magnification (one of Canon's best kept secrets IMHO) and others including a great 85mm for about 600 bucks.

Pentax lenses are superb . I have used the DA100mm/2.8 (the old one), the 35mm Macro. The IQ coming from all of my Pentax lenses is really excellent. If you have some moderate skills at post-processing, even the 18-55 kit lens will impress if you shoot RAW.

This post will not help, I am sure. If you need to shoot very long glass, then Canon would be the way to go. Otherwise, it's a toss-up. You should base your decision on quality control and system as a whole (lenses and flash as well as bodies). Some are recommending Sigma or other third party lenses. I have never understood why one would shell out big bucks for a really good camera body and then put a third party lens on it. But then, I am old and out of date. To prove it: a 16-18 mpixel sensor is more than adequate for me, and my 10 megapixel Pentax K200D STILL takes the best photos of any of my cameras.

Good luck on your decision, and enjoy. Brands mean nothing. Just buy good quality and you will be fine.

This is just an excellent thread. I don't have a K10D but I have thoroughly enjoyed these photos. They make me appreciate all the more the "old" and "outdated" gear that I have, and they have increased my resolve to keep and use it more. Thanks, everyone, and especially to the OP.

I missed the K10, but at least I have the K200D, and it never ceases to please me. :)

HDR in Lightroom 5.3

I don't have a K3, so I can only guess. Is this "HDR" RAW file the result of an automated camera function, like a scene mode or something that is supposed to combine three RAW shots into one, and produce an HDR still in RAW? If so, it will look kinda dead and need further processing just like any other RAW file.

There is a solution if this is a bug: simply autobracket three or five RAW files yourself, select them in Lightroom and export them to an HDR software program. That's the standard procedure. Hope this helps.

DPR K-3 Review Finally Up (Gold Award)

A Gold Award, and still complaints. So Nikon scores 4% higher than Pentax? 4% of WHAT!!!????

Every time I pick up one of my Canons or Pentaxes, I know that I am in for a great time, and I know also that once I get finished with the Photoshop end of things, no one will ever know which camera I used for any particular shot.

The K3 review tells me that I can expect more of the same. Bravo. As for the rest of it, it is oogala.

Would You Use the Pentax 70-210 for Portraits?
Posted By snofox

I would use it at the long end for portraits in a heartbeat. The softness is very flattering for anyone over 20, and from 150 - 200mm it conflates the distance between nose and forehead, giving VERY flattering perspectives. I believe it was Scott Kelby who said that if you photograph a woman with anything less than a 200mm you will lose a friend, even though you have a beautifully sharp photo, because of exaggerated perspective around the nose and cheeks and forehead with any lens less than 200mm in focal length. The same is true for men as well as women, unless you are after brutally sharp, grungy photos that reveal every blemish, facial hair, skin discolouration and flaw. Those photos are "in" these days, even of old people, but I prefer to keep friends. :)

That being said, I hardly ever do portraits, but in my limited experience, 200mm yields the nicest looking portraits of all.

You may have a very bad case of GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). I recognize the symptoms, having had the disorder more than once. It's like shingles. You can't stop it, and it's very painful. You have my sympathies.
