Thanks guys :)
Who knows, maybe in the future I'll desire more but for now the gain vs cost isn't worth it :)

That's with the gopro so there's not much that can be done with that.
Thanks! And no everything is un-modified. As long as we kept the mirror up it was all good! The slow motion was done with a 60d at the maximum frame rate and some adobe software iirc.
Thanks! I'll forward it on to my buddy that edited it, it was our first go so we are more than welcome to feedback!
The 60d was used for all of the slowmotion shots due to the higher frame rate vs. the 5d so we are familiar with its capabilities. Still there is nothing that beats the FF look, especially with my K 50mm F/1.2 ;) To be honest we didn't really desire anything more than we had, so im not sure about more accessories. We didn't need anything more than the cameras, lenses, tripod, and slider :)

Yea living in southern California means there is no lack of open desert space to play in :)
Thanks!
We didn't mod the lenses or camera in any way. My takumar 55mm F/1.8 and 300mm F/4 shot perfectly fine in regular mode, and all of the others shot fine in picture and video mode using liveview. I'll look into the sony though, i've been out of the photo game for a while so im unfamiliar withe the new cameras.
Appreciate it

Seeing as the prices for used bodies have steadily been dropping, im thinking I may be half jumping ship for the video/FF on the 5dmkII. A good friend of mine bought one recently and we've been testing it with all of my pentax glass and it is near impossible to go back after getting used to that beautiful DOF difference. Anyways we decided to take a shot at making a video of my truck with his "new" camera and my old glass... this was our result. You Tube |

I must say, the K 50mm F/1.2 SHINES on the canon body. It is like they are meant for eachother I'm ashamed to say :o Are there many other canon FF / Pentax glass users on here?
edit: I forgot to add that some was shot with a gen 1 gopro and some of the slow motion was with a 60d and pentax glass (also worked well).

My good friend picked up a battered 5dmkII for video work, but only had the plastic 50mm to use with it. We searched around a bit, picked up a cheap adapter, and made our first video using my glass and his camera body. The lenses we used were primarily the K 50mm F/1.2, M 85mm F/2, and F 28mm F/2.8. This has pretty much convinced me to pick up a used 5dmkII unless a pentax FF will similar quality video is introduced.
Please go full screen and the maximum resolution you computer can handle to enjoy the video :) You Tube |

Dont remember, the picture is over a year old. Im sure I was fairly close though... something that you can't really get around with high-magnification macro's.
I dont want to spam the op's thread so if you want more pictures with the lens just check Flickr: Search yeatzee (Officially an adult, but still learning)'s photostream
its a small list of some pictures with the el nikkor I've taken.

looks good Nass, very impressive. Prior to stopping I looked for a 28 religiously but found nothing remotely priced within my range... guess I should have kept looking!
Maybe I'll get back into it when I get a new Imac and we can get some more macro stuff going here :)

free bump for my favorite macro setup of old. Nearly all my studio stacks on my flickr are taken with this setup.

I'll chime in. I used to use a shutter speed of 1/40 +/- pretty much exclusively. If your using a flash you dont need any faster, and that way you get some ambient light in the shot as well as flash. Aperture wise when stacking I used to pretty much stick to F/5.6. Sometimes I'd go a little smaller but never past F/8

Yes. If I had the money and still shot I'd have a canon 5d mkII and MPE

get out and shoot some animate subjects, or some flowers. A much better way to start learning and practicing as you'll never really get a good shot of bolts no matter the technique.
But what do I know, I dont shoot anymore.

Looks good Nass
"Technical, 3 flashes, 2 from the sides and one from the bottom, el nikkor 50@5.6, 1s exposure through to a smallHD field monitor outputting the background. Tissue paper diffuser moved quite far back, 180 shots stacked in zerene (mainly dmap with a bit of pmax hair action thrown in); fair bit of retouching; further work in CS3 & Topaz detail."

I appreciate the compliment Ben :) Im ashamed to say it, but I havent shot macro's in multiple months :( Im almost never on here as well anymore
reverse stacking is a pretty decent way to get high magnification images, but the results can vary greatly on specific lenses. For example I reversed a 50mm and a 28mm on my sigma 105mm macro many times, resulting in pretty decent results. However ultimately the IQ was just not up to par, especially when compared to other setups. Read this thread, it should answer most of your questions :) https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/133851-macro-s...mparisons.html |

whose bragging? What do I gain by shooting 100 images over 50 if they both accomplish the same goal? Not much to brag about there ;)
I have experience in this technique, and am more than willing to help shed some light :)
It all depends on the situation :) Great answer right?
In all seriousness, 20 images like you said can be more than enough for certain images whereas hundreds can be a necessity for another. The main reason for this is magnification, optics, and diffraction.
Here's an example using a flower as the subject:
At 1:1 diffraction is there, but does not present severe image degradation. Therefore someone might easily get away with less than 10 shots at F/8-16 to say get the entire flower into focus.
But what if you want just the stamen's to fill the frame and be in focus, you'll need to up the magnification. In doing so, you also pronounce diffraction. Assuming you have to bump up the magnification from 1:1 to 5:1, now F/8-F/16 isn't going to get you the best image quality possible because of diffraction. Instead, depending on the lens, F/5.6 or so might be better. So now you've increased the magnification and dropped the Fstop, both of these decisions drastically reduce DOF. So now you must compensate with more images, bringing you from ~10 images to maybe 50+.
Ok so now you want a picture illustrating the detail of the pollen on the Stamen's, and out comes the 10x microscope objective. The thing with objectives is that they have a fixed aperture, usually (dont quote me on this) iirc at around F/2. So now your shooting at 10:1, and with an F-stop of ~F/2. 100 images may not even be enough, maybe even 200. Again it ALL depends.
With all of the above in mind, also note like the above poster said you need a healthy amount of overlay. I always error on the side of caution, and perhaps overlap images more than I need to. Better safe than have hours of work trashed because you wanted to take the easier route :)

130 image stack, each at F/5.6 for maximum IQ _IGP0149ejap by yeatzee (now 17, but still learning), on Flickr
single image from the stack.
see why 13 images wouldn't work over 130?
edit 2: maybe Nass, now that he has a stackshot, can take two stacks to better illustrate everything. One with much less photo's using a smaller F/stop, and the other with many more images and a larger F/stop.

Ah gotcha, I didn't know you were comparing it to something like the ebay "focus rails" or whatnot (rrs, novoflex, etc. all basically the same). I was referring to a linear stage which is often specified as a focus rail as well :)
