what is focal length when using extension tubes.

yeah noted - point not lost that using tripod plus timer = no antishake. I've found using a tripod to be a pain in the ass. in heavy undergrowth, chasing insects it's hard work changing position. plus tring to get the legs deployed rattles the undergrowth about too much.
I tend to use monopod - hence shake reduction still brings some benefit, or handhold.

Agree with the diffused flash point also.
I use an old B&H flashgun with tissue paper over the front..

I think the suggestions to add the tube length to the focal lenght seems to give best results.
