Item for Sale
Canon fd 200mm F4 macro 1:1 - Rare, Canon FD legend converted to Pentax mount

Asking Price
$200

Item Location
Richmond, British Columbia (Canada)

Item Description
Background
Uncommon and expensive when new, this is THE Canon macro lens to have. Designed by Canon to outperform the Nikon 200mm F4.0 Micro-Nikkor, the Canon succeeded in being better optically and being a much easier lens to use. It offers 1:1 macro capability without the use of extenders or tubes but with the added bonus of the greater working distance of a long telephoto. This lens is a classic of the Canon FD lens line-up. It is rarely listed on Ebay, and when listed, will still fetch upward of $300. I obtained this lens from its original owner. The aperture ring was stuck fully open, so I had no reservations about converting it to Pentax mount. I am not a machinist and used hand tools to do the conversion.

I have never been a macro shooter, and although I converted this lens some 3 years ago, I have used it less than 3 times and posted one image to Flickr. Bugs just don't do it for me.;)

There is one on E-bay currently available from the UK with the owner asking over $800 for it.

The Good News
  • The aperture ring is fully functional and opens and closes smoothly. The aperture functions much like a M42 lens in that there are no fixed f-stops but it moves continously from f4 to f22

  • The focus is very smooth. The minimum focus distance is approximately 1foot - 9 inches and this provides 1:1 magnification.

  • The coatings are in excellent shape with no visible defects.

  • The internal dust is minimal for a lens of this age.

The Bad News
I miscalculated on the amount of the mount that I removed, and the lens will not focus to infinity. It will focus from 1'-9" to approximately 50 feet. The Pentax mount is permanently epoxied to the lens barrel so it is unlikely that it can be removed.

The Offering
- One Canon FD 200mm f4 dedicated macro lens that goes natively to 1:1
- Lens converted to Pentax Mount
- Comes with fitted tripod mount that is fully detachable
- Comes with Generic front and rear caps

I had no issues whatsoever mounting and removing the lens from the K10d body. The modification uses a Pentax k mount to M42 adapter that has an integral flange. These are widely available on Ebay and while they usually ensure that you cannot reach infinity focus when used with a M42 lens, they are perfect for lens modifications.

Item for Sale
Canon fd 300mm F4L manual focus lens converted to Pentax mount

Asking Price
$225

Item Location
Richmond, British Columbia (Canada)

Item Description
Background
I converted this lens to Pentax mount several years ago and used the lens with my K10D and a Pentax 1.4XL extender. At that time, I was frustrated with the selection of Pentax manual focus lenses in the 300mm plus range as my interest was in photographing eagles and song birds. I experimented with a Takumar 300mm f4 lens and a Tokina 400mm SD lens. I hated the long minimum focus distances, the CA and purple fringing, and the need to close down for sharpness. I also had no intention of paying $1000 plus to get the automatic focus lenses with ED or special glass.

The Pentax manual lenses (takumars, k's, M's, A's, even the A*'s) were expensive and had a number of shortcomings: no special glass so the CA and purple fringing were ever present; you had to close the lenses down to f8 or so to get sharpness, and the lenses did not have internal focusing so trying to grab quick focus was difficult. At that time I found the Canon FD line of professional lenses and converted several lenses for use with the Pentax mount.

You can see some of the images that I obtained from this lens and my K10d at Canon FD 300mm F4 L - manual focus - a set on Flickr. Most shots were taken wide open. I had so much success with this lens that I purchased its big brother, the 300mm f2.8. When I looked at converting the 2.8 lens to the Pentax mount I discovered the micro 4/3 cameras and moved away from Pentax bodies and the need to modify the mounts.

I have not used this lens for a year and would like to pass it to someone who will use it. I recognize that the lens has limited appeal but I also know that this lens will produce outstanding images for a long period of time.

The good news
  • This lens is sharp wide open with incredible control of CA and purple fringing (special UD glass elements)

  • The internal focus design means that you can focus using finger control (smooth and nicely damped)

  • Minimum focus is just under 3 metres

  • The glass is clear with no fungus

  • The lens focuses to just beyond infinity

  • You can control the aperture

The bad news
  • The front lens has minor marks which have no impact on image quality.

  • The aperture markings are no longer accurate. The aperture is wide open until it reaches approximately 5.6 and then the readings do not correspond to the actual opening. I wanted the lens used wide open so accepted this compromise during the conversion.

  • The previous owner of the lens scratched some letters and numbers in the sliding lens cap and on the barrel in front of the aperture ring.

  • The aperture ring is easy to open but is more difficult to close and has friction when closing.

  • I am not a machinist and modified the lens mount using hand tools. The K-mount can be removed, I designed the modification this way in case I needed to shim for infinity focus, but it is unlikely that you can return the lens to its original condition.

  • There is the usual accumulation of dust inside the lens as befitting its age

The Offering
The lens comes with a fitted tripod mount, the original canon front lens cap, the 1X drop in filter, and a generic pentax rear cap.

Rokinon 85mm f1.4
I purchased this lens from a forum member a number of months ago. The lens was purchased for a specific occasion, an indoor shoot for a local senior non-profit association. The lens performed flawlessly as all shots were taken wide open and most shots were acceptably sharp. I learned however that event photography is too stressful, and I have now passed the baton to another volunteer. I have not added pictures of the lens because the previous listing shows a number of images of the lens, caps, hood and box.

I am selling this lens for $(US or Cdn) 220.00New price $(Us or Cdn) 200.00

Shipping
Shipping throughout Canada and the US is approximately $15-25 per lens. I usually ship expedited parcel which includes a tracking number. Shipments to the US take approximately 5 working days

I am disposing of the remnants of my Pentax gear. I am a self confessed manual focus junkie and primarily use manual focus lenses. After migrating from Pentax to micro 4/3 gear, I kept these special lenses as I planned to use them on the micro 4/3 gear. However, since purchasing the panasonic 20mm f1.7 lens (my one and only automatic focus lens) I have not mounted my cherished 28mm lens. In addition, the added reach of the 2X multiplier means that I can use my 300mm lens without mounting the extender and get the same reach. My personal philosophy is that if I don't use the lenses, then I must pass them to someone who will use them.

Pentax M 28mm f2.0 lens. This rare lens is in excellent shape, good front glass, fast clean aperture blades, negligible dust, but does have one defect and that is a coating mark in the middle of the rear lens which is impossible to photograph. For this reason, I am selling this rare lens for $US 200, a significant discount from current market prices. I have never noticed any image defect from this coating mark, but then again, all sellers claim this.:hmm: I used this lens with my K10D, for panoramic images of the Vancouver downtown. The lens comes with the original pentax case, in unblemished shape, front and rear pentax lens caps (hard to say whether they are original), and a takumar 28mm f3.5 square lens hood, which I love for its totally retro look. The hood has some scrapes which I used a black marker pen to hide. I purchased this lens used from a local retailer.

Pentax A 1.4XL extender SOLD This hard to find lens is in great shape, I purchased it as New Old Stock from a local retailer, and it comes with original case, caps and box. There was some dust in the lens when I purchased it so I negotiated a small price discount. I used this converter with my modified Canon fd 200mm macro, 300mm, 400mm lenses and found that it had a negligible effect on image sharpness and contrast, even though I used it with Canon long lenses rather than pentax lenses. I am offering this like new converter to this market place for $US200. The opening of the 400mm lens was a little tight and marked the side of the converter barrel that encloses the extended forward lens. These marks are entirely cosmetic and have no effect on the lens performance. Please click here for posted shots using this converter with Canon lenses.

I will post images of the lenses and their accessories on Friday.
Please note that the prices do not include postage, which will be an additional $15-25 depending upon destination. I will swallow the paypal fees.

I have sold and purchased lenses on this forum before and have an unblemished ebay record under the username gscara.

An excellent shot! Nice to see the combination of Pentax with Canon lenses. There are not many 400mm options using Pentax manual focus glass that give this quality of results. Thanks for sharing.

Nature Fox Sparrow - Canon Fd Lens on Pentax K10D

I modified the Canon lens mount which provides both infinity focus and aperture control. I have to use the lens in stop down mode. However, I use the lens wide open because it is sharp and has no optical defects such as purple fringing or ca. The Pentax 1.4XL converter does add a small amount of fringing when shooting with strong back lights, but is an excellent match to the Canon fd L family of lenses.

There are a number of articles on the internet on modifying these lenses, especially on the 4/3 forums. The procedure is relatively straight forward.

I recently came across an article where the author converted the Canon 1.4 extender which meant that he did not have to modify the original lens. Converting the extender is the simpler route and is an excellent match to the 300mm and higher family of Canon Fd lenses.

Thanks for your comments.

These shots were taken with a Canon 300mm F4L combined with a Pentax 1.4XL converter to make a 420mm f5.6 manual focus lens. Both shots were taken wide open at iso 400. Needless to say, both shots are cropped. The camera shake reduction works well at these longer focal lengths as both shots were taken hand held with shutter speeds under 1/125 second.

I appreciate the comments and feedback. We went all the way from 'starving artist' to 'look cool hanging my home office'. That was quite a ride!

In a small way I am glad that I managed to raise the ire of some viewers. I had no idea that people felt as passionate as they do about HDR. Amazing to think that Pentax now includes a built in HDR feature in their most advanced K7. They must be pandering to all those starving artists. What will they do next?

This shot was the middle shot of the sequence of 5. The shot has the following post processing adjustments:
The shot was first leveled and a curve adjustment was made. The lightness channel was then sharpened. The shot was then exported as a jpg for the forum. The HDR that I posted had three additional steps: tone mapping, detail enhancing and color balancing.

Side note:
I always understood the word photography means "paint with light". It is amusing when people use photography to deal with idealogical issues rather than as an information channel to entertain our senses!

Item for Sale
Pentax-A 50mm f1.4

Asking Price
$US 110

Item Description
This lens needs no introduction. I am selling this one because I have too many 50mm lenses. I am keeping my SMC takumar from a purely nostalgia point of view, even though this lens is better on the digital cameras.

The optics, aperture and focusing are all in excellent shape.
The lens comes with:
  • Tiffen 49mm filter

  • Pentax branded front cap (don't know if it is original to the lens)

  • Generic rear cap.

Item Description
This is the original 24mm K mount lens and is difficult to find. I am selling this lens because I have the M-28mm f2.0 lens which is slightly sharper. This lens rates very highly in the Pentax review forum.
  • The lens optics are excellent except for some slight dust particles.

  • The focus ring is smooth and well damped.

  • The aperture blades are clean, with no oil and shut down quickly.

  • The lens barrel has some brassing around the aperture ring.

  • The lens comes with both Pentax lens caps except I cannot tell if they are the originals.

  • The lens comes with a Hoya 52mm UV filter

  • The lens comes with a Konica 24mm lens hood that fits the lens well. This lens hood is in good shape.

Item for Sale
Pentax Super Program and AF220T Flash

Asking Price
$40 US

Item Description
This Pentax super program is very clean with virtually no scratches or other physical defects, except for a slight dimple in the bottom of the camera. The camera has a battery and all systems seem to work well. When I put a lens on the camera it will meter and the shutter speeds sound appropriate. The camera strap is very clean and appears almost new, in fact it is similar to the camera strap on the K10D.

The flash is TTL Auto and is also very clean. The flash battery compartment is very clean.

I purchased this unit from a film aficionado in order to purchase the lenses. I never had any intention to process any film through the camera. I hope someone on this forum can make use of this excellent sample.

Some Bird Shots - Manual focus with Canon 'Frankinlens' on K10D
Posted By gscara

I can describe the process and over the next week or two I will take some images of what I have done and put together a better description.

First the Caveats
  • Converting these lenses is likely not reversible. Once you start you have to be committed to the end. You could probably reverse the conversion, but I make use of existing parts when I rebuild the stop-down diaphragm assembly that gives me diaphragm control.

  • There is a well entrenched group of Canon FD fanatics that despise anyone that modifies these lenses.

  • Most pentax fanatics will think you are crazy because nothing beats Pentax glass. :o

  • You have to purchase a M42-Pentax K adapter plate from ebay. You specifically want to buy one that does not allow for infinity focus, in other words, an adapter that has a thin metal flange. This will take several weeks to arrive.

  • None of my conversions are going to win any beauty awards. I don't have access to a lathe or any metal working equipment. My tools are a wooden fret saw with a fine tooth blade, a dremel motor tool, 1/16" thick aluminum plate, epoxy, copper wire, metal files, a couple of clamps, and an electric drill with some small drill bits. I do the entire conversion on the kitchen table in my apartment. In addition, I purchased some UHWM tape from Lee Valley tools to act as a wear strip-bearing, and got my hands on some thin pieces of plywood that I use to sandwich the thin aluminum plate when I saw out the shape that I need. Without sandwiching the thin aluminum it will bend and distort as you saw out the shape.

  • Total conversion time takes several evenings. This allows the high strength epoxy to set over a 8 hour period when I create the aperture assembly and fashion the composite mounting plate by epoxying together the M42 adapter plate to the 1/16" aluminum plate.

The process essentially follows these steps:
  1. Remove the existing automatic aperture assembly. This is usually the easiest step because you just have to remove three to four small screws.

  2. Connect the existing aperture control ring to the existing diaphragm. This process was slightly different on the 300mm F4L and the 200mm macro lens. The macro lens was easier to convert. While the process is essentially similar for both lens and would likely be different for each Canon lens.

  3. Mount your new composite adapter plate to the lens.

  4. Go and take some pictures and marvel at this new Frankinlens that you have just created!

If you are interested in getting this information, please don't hesitate to PM me and let me know. If I get some requests I will try to steel myself to actually sit down and create the conversion document.

Before I started my first conversion I found some Olympus 4/3 forums where the members had converted a number of FD lenses. Looking at how they did the conversion gave me the courage to purchase the first 300mm F4L lens and give it a go.

If you would like to see more images taken with the converted lenses please check out my Flickr photostream

Some Bird Shots - Manual focus with Canon 'Frankinlens' on K10D

The Frankinlenses are the old Canon FD lenses. They can be purchased for a song on Ebay and Craig's list, well actually ever since the Panasonic G1 was unleashed, these lenses are slowly increasing in price.

If you only purchase Pentax compatible lenses you have to be prepared to pay a small fortune for long focal length lenses. The SMC Takumar 300mm lens is usually over $200 and has lots of CA and PF. The 300mm K's and M's approach $300 and higher. The A*300mm is over $600. The automatic focus lenses are over $1,000. If you want a 400mm length lens the situation is even worse!!! Yes you can purchase the Tokinas and the Sigmas but you have to be prepared to pay over $500 for decent quality (the at-x's and the APO Macros)

Now look at the particulars. The A*300 lense is not internal focus and, to my knowledge, does not have SD or Flourite elements. This means slow focusing, CA and PF on out of focus elements. The Tokina's have to be be shot at F8 to get decent sharpness and IQ. I personally don't have experience with the Sigmas.

The Canon FD 300mm F4L comes with two UD elements and has no CA and purple fringing. This lens is usable wide open with outstanding results- all the images I have posted were shot wide open. These lenses can be purchased for $200 or less, and yes, you can pay a lot more if you focus on the wrong auction. The Canon FD 300mm F2.8 L's can be purchased for $600 or less. The Canon 400mm f4.5 can usually be purchased for less than $300. The IQ of this abandoned lens family is simply outstanding, especially in those focal lengths where you have to pay a fortune to get Pentax compatible glass.

Try and find a 200mm Pentax macro lens for a reasonable price. If you can find one, be prepared to spend a absolute fortune for Pentax compatibility. This image was taken with a Canon FD 200mm macro that has 1:1 capabilities that was converted to the Pentax mount. While relatively rare on Ebay these macro lenses can be purchased for less than $300.

I love Pentax for their incredible camera bodies. When matched with the obsolete Canon FD lenses the combination can be simply magical!
