I’ll be over in Jacksonville for two weeks this month for work. I’ve just about worked out processing on my iPad, it’s just a bit slow going.

I'm in this month. I was reading another thread talking about the 43 and quite a few brought up the 40. I realized I've had the DA 40 Limited for some time and never gave it a good workout. So it'll be the DA 40 on the KP for the month.

The 77 was my first Limited, and to this day, my most beloved. The 43 ended up in my bag shortly thereafter. This was back in the days of the K10D. While I found it a great lens, I soon found it was much more at home on my film cameras than on the K10. Since I got the K1, the 43 and the 31 see a lot more use.

[I'm jealous of Digitalis having the LTM version]

It sounds like it is going to be electrical in nature. Inside the camera mount are two gold "pins" that control the electronic (in lens) focus motors. Make sure one of those didn't get jammed when the camera dropped. If the pin got pushed in and jammed, it will affect the electronic controls of the lens focusing, but not the older screw drive lenses.

Random question here, what lens(es) have you tried? There are two autofocus systems in the K3, the electronic for lenses with built in motors, and the screwdrive for older autofocus lenses. Have you tried both?

I started with Pentax when the K10D came out as I needed one system for digital and film (Plus the K10D was/is an amazing camera). I was shooting events in both formats.

I won’t begin to try to count what I have had or have today…

I have had this happen twice with them. The last one was when I ordered my KP, which ended up being delivered without a couple of things it was suppose to have in the kit. My personal shopper resolved it quickly as they had shipped me the wrong kit. Great customer service.

Sharing a hard learned lesson about old film cameras in general

I’ve had nearly all of my old film cameras CLAd in the past three years. But I’m fortunate to have someone close. I use to live 10 minutes from his shop, but after a move I have a terrible 1 hour drive. Of the 8 I’ve taken to him, I’ve had 1 that wasn’t repairable due to needing parts not available.

I don't consider the DA 20-40 a "walk around" lens. It lives up to it's Limited name. IMO You can see a slight vignette here at 28mm on the K-1, and if memory serves me, there was no crop.

Since we’re coming to the end of the month (and I work all weekend) I figured I’d give some thoughts on the Leica Summicron 50.

First off, the lens has stellar build quality (it is a Leica) and without the hood, it’s quite compact. The focus ring is the perfect combination of smooth but not loose, which may be that I have a good lightly used copy. The colors and contrast from the lens are exceptional.

There really are only a couple of Cons for this lens. First, I wish it would focus a bit closer than 18”. And second, it’s a full 320 degrees to go from close to infinity focus. We often complain about not having enough focus throw with the newer autofocus lenses, but this one goes to the extreme.

I’ll definitely be keeping the lens as I think it is perfectly suited for portrait/people work.

Des and BruceBanner summed up the Pros for the 20-40 pretty well. At the last wedding I shot, I used the 20-40 on the K-1 and it worked out great (I fully tested it before to know where the sweet spots were). The 20-40 is one of my favorite lenses and I rarely leave home without it.

Not long ago I picked up a DA40 just because I wanted to try it. It was so compact on my KP that I just purchased the DA21 for the same reason. I’ll be giving the DA21 the workout in March for the Single In Group.

Welcome back!

I would definitely keep the Tamron 90 and Sigma 10-20. Get the K70, or if funds allow it, the KP. But, having said that, I would keep the GX10. In good light, the GX10 (K10D) are still highly regarded in image quality and colors due to the CCD sensor. There’s a pretty active group here posting pictures regularity.

All we need is a KP

For work like a wedding etc. the ergonomics of the K5, K3 or even the K10 made for a better day, especially considering lenses used in those situations tend to be larger.

If I were ever going to get back into that type of work, I would definitely have the battery grip for the KP. The 50-135 on the KP is a stellar combo, but having the extra grip area would be a necessity for a work type environment. Of course that’s my opinion.

But really, the Vivitar Series 1 70-210 on the KX is a larger lens with less camera real estate and it’s always been a pleasure to use.

With todays mirrorless cameras becoming larger, the KP fit the bill with a small and very effective tool for Pentax users.

I’ll never understand why some areas only had one grip with the KP. Since I received all three, I’ve had the chance to use them all. Even though I have large hands, I like and use the medium grip the most. The large grip is great when using larger lenses, but I’ve never used the small grip except for an hour or two after buying the camera.

I have quite a few 135mm lenses, including the Tak bayonet 2.5. But I’m partial to putting the 21 through it’s paces since I just acquired it.

The 40 Limited is a really nice lens, I enjoy mine, especially on the KP. Actually, come to think of it, I’m a bit overweight in that area now having the DA 20-40, 21, 40 and 43. Maybe I should start looking at the 15 and 70...

I don’t have the Leica 180 (yet) but I have the Summicron 50 and the Elmarit 135 and the DA* 200. The DA* 200 ranks right up there with the two Leica lenses I have, and I would say is sharper across the image.

Personally, I would start with the DA lens. It is impressive.

While I love my DA 40 on the KP, the FA 43 is definitely the way to go for the K-1 as the corners far outshine the DA.

What are your DSLR dealbreakers?

Some of us were affected by the orphaned Canon FD mount. It didn’t make my camera take any less quality pictures, but when I was ready to go to autofocus, the last company I was going to look toward was Canon. Which ultimately led me to Pentax.

But, as far as deal-breakers go... No K mount, I doubt I’ll buy it. If (or when) I add another body, I’d like to have the two card slots. I have no need of the built in flash, I’ll attach one when needed, but the GPS built in is a nice feature. I want a camera with a battery grip, but I need to be able to detach it, something I have always applauded Pentax for.
