645N focusing issue

Hi zi464
I have the 645N II version. Auto-focus should function normally even with no film in the camera.
If you have loaded the film adapter with film and put it in the camera, the shutter speed is automatically set to 1/1000 sec. until you have pressed the shutter once and transported the film forward to frame number one. (Frame counter changes from 0 to 1).
Adjust the diopter so that you see the brackets and markings on the ground-glass absolutely sharp. That is the correct way to adjust it.
The FA 75mm lens has an auto-focus/manual focus switch. Have you remembered to set it to auto-focus?

New Pentax 645 lenses compatibility with old pentax 645 bodies

Hi Thibaut,
1) FA lenses are film era lenses with aperture ring and work on film era bodies. On the Pentax 645 you will only be able to focus manually. For that and other reasons I would advise you to buy the 645N or 645N II. Both are good, the N II has some minor tweaks that may be useful, but nothing exceptional. The FA 645 33-55mm F4.5 works great on film.

2) DA and D-FA 645 lenses are designed for the newer digital bodies. Both the DA and the DFA 645 25mm lenses lack an aperture ring and are therefore not fully compatible with 645 film bodies. A better choice would be either the FA or the D-FA 645 35mm lens. Both have an aperture ring and are fully compatible with film era bodies. The D-FA 645 35mm retained the optical design of the FA lens but with some tweaks of the aspherical elements and the aperture blades became rounded for a nicer bokeh.

Also, the DA 645 25mm is not recommended on film bodies due to vignetting (the lens hood is designed for the smaller 645 digital format).

Regards,
Lars

I am very satisfied with Manfrotto 410 for medium and large format. Precise and sturdy and very accurate adjustment in all the axes. Manfrotto 460MG is a much cheaper alternative for "35mm full frame" and medium format, but I think it lacks the clutch that can free the movement on each of the three axes.

Old flash new flash what's the issue?

1. They should not be so expensive, but all proprietary systems are rather expensive. P-TTL is a complex solution that in my opinion works well when only one flash is involved - ideally connected to the camera via an P-TTL compatible cable. When more than one flash is involved, P-TTL gets 1) expensive and 2) complex with much walking back and forth between camera and flashes.
2. Don't bother with old flashes. Use a more generic flash system not dependent on P-TTL.

I therefore second the solution suggested by "35mmfilmfan" - a number of Yongnuo 560 (generation III or newer) family of flashes controlled remotely via a Yongnuo trigger on the camera. This solution is inexpensive and very practical to use with everything controlled from the camera. There is no limit on the number of flashes, and they can be controlled in up to six different groups. The control is all manual - that is you decide the output of the individual flashes. No TTL involved. The back LCD of your camera functions as an exposure guide and light meter. One downside is that you cannot use "high-speed sync", but otherwise you will get just as good (or better) results as with TTL flash control at a much lower cost.

Another option would be a small set of proper studio flashes. These can be found used at reasonable prices. A set with just two flashes and some light modifiers can still go a long way.

Pentax 645 120 film insert loading issues.

Hard to say from your description. The toothed gear on the side of the film back is not supposed to "spin freely". It should only be able to move in one direction - film or no film. If the film advances as it should, I presume everything is ok ...?

Do I need the original lens hood for the SMC Pentax-FA 645 80-160mm F4.5?

I agree with Phil.
The original petal hood on the FA version gives the best protection against flare and straylight. A round hood mounted in the filter thread must be quite shallow or quite wide to avoid vignetting at 80mm and will therefore offer very little protection against flare and straylight at 160mm. A petal-shaped hood will extend further out except in the corners. As the optical design of the A-version is the same as the FA-version, one of the major reasons to upgrade from A to FA is a better hood (- the other important reasons being auto focus and data imprint on the negative).

Pentax 67 - Accidental Double Exposure?

The Pentax 67 can normally not make double-exposures, so something is not quite right. My guess would be a not totally complete winding stroke. Be careful to complete the winding stroke fully when you wind on the film.

I don't doubt that the DFA 55mm is a (marginally) better lens, but the old A 55mm is still quite good. I shoot film and like to have an aperture ring on the lens, so the DFA 55mm is not really an option for me (and the price difference is huge!).

I have the P67 500mm f:5.6 lens, but do not use it that often. I bought it used with the 2x extender, but have never tried that combo.

I like the lens on the P67, but it's hard to find space for it in the camera bag.

Pentax 645 - Multiple Exposures question
Posted By LaHo
Replies: 2

I no longer have the 645 - I use the 645N II. But from my knowledge and the description in the manual, the procedure you describe is correct if you want double-exposures, as the multi-exposure ring automatically returns to its original position after releasing the shutter.

Multi-exposures are possible, but then you have to reset the multi-exposure ring for each extra exposure. So this multi-exposure ring is basically a double-exposure function which can be used repeatedly to make multi-exposures.

[On the 645N and N II on the other hand it is the other way around. Here there is a multi-exposure switch which has to be returned to its original position by the user in order to turn off the multi-exposure function. So these cameras basically have a multi-exposure function which can be turned off by the user after the first press of the shutter button to make a double-exposure.]

Change WB in one PEF-file in DCU. Right-click on the picture or thumbnail of that file in DCU and choose "Copy parameters". Select all the remaining PEF-files, right-click on the selection and choose "Paste parameters". Done.

You use 120 film. 120 film has backing paper. I seriously doubt that the "scuff" on the pressure plate will mark the film through the backing paper. I think you must search for the source of problem elsewhere.

I second the recommendation of the Pentax-A 35mm. This and the 75mm (either A or FA - same optics) makes a great set. A fast normal lens is always nice to have, and it is small and light. To top it off you could go for the 120mm macro - again A or FA (same optics) - in the long end. Manual focus is fine on a macro lens. Or the 150mm A for portraits - great lens with in-built hood. Or the FA 200mm - light, relatively compact, autofocus and sharp.

BTW - I have and like the 45-85mm FA. It's a great lens. But with the large petal hood and being a zoom lens it is bulky in the bag and heavy on the camera. I therefore prefer a three prime lens kit like e.g. the 35mm A, the 75 mm A/FA and the 150mm A/200mm FA. Very versatile and relatively light.
