Is $370 a good price for a brand new Metz 58?

people who own it say it as a top notch flash, as good as it gets in a pentax flash system. it has all bells and whistles.

one thing though, before you go and spend all that money on a flash.

for strobist purposes - off camera flash - you can go much cheaper than that. for strobist stuff, you dont need pttl (which this flash has). but off course, metz 54 is capable of studio lighting, off camera work, on camera work - everything...

Portrait photography

taking portraits is a tall order. taking pictures of people is much more difficult than taking pictures of trees, or, say, cars. My advice would be to start to educate yourself looking at some really good portrait photographers. Here are a few of my personal favorites:
Gregory Heisler, Dan Winters...Go and google them and see where that takes you

See for yourself what it is what they bring out in their subjects to show in photos. Equipment is important too, but I think that getting to know your subjects is really important too. As I said, people are not cars, we have feelings.

Just my 2 cents.
All best, losta luck.

P.S. And yes, K-x is good enough to start. In buying new stuff, I would go in the direction of lighting (flash, lightbox, umrellas etc), not lens.

How do YOU meter?

I started metering in Av mode, but found it to be rather unpractical, becouse the camera meter reacted wildly to different colors in the scene (e.g. white curtains, or black armchairs, or black T-shirt and such items).

So I started using the green buton, metering of things like trees, benches in parks, pavements and gray asphalt...). Then I take a shot in M mode. As long as the lighting doesnt change drasticaly, I keep it. Since I work in RAW, I can post process it later no problem.

One thing thoug - when I am outside - if I am facing the sun or if the camera is away from the sun, the exposure can differ by as much as a stop. But changing a shutter speed is easy, so no problem there...

Is Pentax in trouble?

Hi from Zagreb, Croatia. Pentax is alive and well in these parts. These constant rumors of Pentax going out of business make me somewhat nervous, because I bought a K200D a month ago, and I am not planing to change ship any time soon. Local Pentax wholesaler is rather active, but retailers are pushing the canonikon gear. When I was in the market for my first DSLR, they tried to sell me Nikon D60 (a fine entry level camera), but it just didn't fit my large hands. It didn't feel right in my hands no matter what. Nikon D80 felt much better (and is a much better camera than D60) but they were telling me it was an:"older model". So much for how much they know about cameras and what they are selling to people.

So, one cannot hope for sales people to give customers information on what they really need, and what options they have. I believe they are still running the megapixel race...

Another thing here - camera lovers and amateur photogs are rather active in Internet forums much like this one - exchanging information and helping one another. Internet is a great tool, and people who go and venture to buy their first DSLR do not go uninformed.

The message, the experience and legacy of this brand, which offers a lot - and you don't have to take a second mortgage for your hobby - should be better communicated.
