Looking at the K1, there are some very impressive reasons to pick one up. I shoot both with FF and a crop (K3), but I might replace the K3 with the K1.
What about you? Crop has some benefits as does FF. Would you be happy with just FF? Depends. I like my K-5, and I've got a couple of good APS-C lenses. The K-1 is about 300 g heavier. If the K-1 handles well & works well in crop mode with photo quality equal to or better than the K-5, I might try to sell the K-5. Otherwise I might just keep the K-5 and use it for screwin' around.
Bigger question is this - will I be upgrading my K-5 with a K-3ii or whatever the next APS-C Pentax is? There I think the answer is no. I'm a hobbyist, and while there are pluses & minuses for APS-C/FF, I have neither the $$ nor the need for both.

Here's my perspective as a longtime lurker. I'm one of those amateurs who got started on a K1000 and loves photography. I take photos for fun. I go outside and take photos to relax. My friends ask me to bring my camera (now K-5) to events.
I'm part of the target market for the K-1, and if and when I can find the money, I'm buying it (assuming it's as good as I think it will be). When I'm taking pictures for me, I'm using primes, and I'm really looking forwards to matching the K-1 with my 100mm FA macro and my 28 & 50 mm FA's. And trying out my K 30mm. :)
I'd probably the buy kit lens D-FA 28-105 for walk-around except I already have the F 35-70 and FA 28-105. I'll be interested in seeing how it does against those and the 24-90. If it's better than those, maybe I'll buy it. I'm glad Pentax is offering a newer consumer FF zoom.
But if I'm paying big money for glass, it's going to be for the amigos primes, maybe a Sigma ART, an ultrawide, not a high-end zoom. For my shooting, the zoom is for the casual stuff. I need a zoom, but I don't need to spend a grand on one. Not until my LBA gets a lot worse.

I didn't shoot enough medium format to make it worth my while. Yeah, I got some gorgeous images, but I just didn't get the camera out enough. For the last few years most of my shooting has been events (my kids were in the cult called marching band/drum corps and my wife made a run for elected office) - either low light or fast action or both, which couldn't be done with my 645n (and would still be problematic for the 645D). Selling the MF lenses and camera bought me my K-5 and a couple of decent zooms. And if I want to get back into MF - well, the lenses I sold are selling for less on ebay than what I got for mine. I could buy the same lenses that I sold and pocket the change... (in fact I'm looking at the current prices on the 67 right now...)
But the MF makes me realize that I can do better than APS-C. If I can keep the low-light performance & high speed of APS-C with higher resolution, I'll be happier.
As for switching to another brand - Let me see what the K-FF looks like. If it has some of the features (like sensor shift) that you mention, I'll probably stay with Pentax. But for now it's all hypothetical. I'll use the best tools I can find going forwards.

I'm a lurker here, not sure if I've ever posted before. This has been a great thread.
I'm an amateur. I'm the guy that unemployed friends go to for cheap wedding, graduation & prom photos. I like taking landscapes, just walking around with my camera. I aspire to walking pieces of the Pacific Crest trail with my camera. For me, this is fun, a hobby, not my living. On the table in front of me in my mancave are my original 1978 K1000 (did some B&W with it just last winter) and my K-5. I really like the K-5, and from what I read the K-3 is even better. I've got a pretty nice set of old glass, including the K135 f2.5, K30 f2.8, M85, and FA 100mm f2.8 macro (which I love). The K100D that got me started in digital is with my daughter at college (playing the starter role the K1000 played for me), and I just bought a K-30 for my spouse. Finally got rid of my 645n & lenses last year, after about 8 years of playing around with medium format.
There are things I like about the APS-C format, and I love the Pentax in-camera shake reduction... but there's just something about full frame that I miss with APS-C, and I'm not sure I can put a finger on it. Some of that might just be that I'm cheap and I'm working with the old glass.
I'm looking to upgrade sometime in the next couple of years, and I hate to say it, but I'm not sure I'll stick with Pentax. A quick look on ebay tells me I can get about $2000-$2500 for my current Pentax gear. If the K-FF is a dud, my upgrade could be a D750 or D800 & you could find my K30 f2.8 with original case and lens hood on the auction block. So I guess you could say that I'm Ricoh/Pentax's target market - the guy who's invested in Pentax, but could easily jump ship.
On to the question of the thread - What will make ME buy the new K-FF?
1) I have to have the money. ;) But I just did my taxes, and that's looking good. :)
2) It has to be roughly equivalent to at least the D750. I know there will be some items where it's better, some worse, but again, roughly equivalent. I'm not too concerned with mp, although I'd love 36mp. I don't need 50mp, that would just let me take more crappy pics but now with higher resolution!
3) It has to be something that gives me faith that Pentax will still be here - and growing, and taken seriously by the industry - in five years.
4) It has to inspire companies like Sigma to start fully supporting full-frame K-mount lenses. Please, give me the 24mm f1.4!
If the K-FF wasn't too much heavier than the K-5 that would be awesome, but heavier isn't a dealbreaker. Better video would be nice, but I've already got a Canon HFM300 with shotgun mic which does a really good job & is pretty easy to use.
I've been impressed with the route taken by Ricoh so far. I'm hopeful that by this time next year I'll be testing out my new K-FF camera. :cool:

not for lenses, but for other equipment. Insanely low price, but you see that the other items listed for feedback are cheap stuff like pens & all from the same buyer. So it's clear it's a con.
The sale ends, and then the sellers emails write, oh, so sorry, no Paypal, the buyer (me) needs to send a cashier's check to outer Moldova. :lol: They disappear really fast once you start talking about escrow services.:lol:
Done it a few times just to p*** them off. then again, maybe someday I will get that FA 600 for $1500!

Just wanting to see if I'm missing something here. I've seen a couple of these on ebay:
Pentax 645 to K adapter
At first I thought this would be cool - I could mount my 645 lenses on my K2 or my K100D!
But - why would I want to spend $260 on an adapter (and that seems to be the going price on these) so I can mount my 645 200mm f4 on a K-mount 35mm camera when I've got a 200mm f4 Pentax-A? And why would I want to put a 75mm f2.8 645 lens on my camera when I can get a 85mm f2 Pentax-M lens for almost the same price? It's not like there's a big selection of inexpensive 645 lenses.
Maybe this made sense when you had to buy all of your lenses new instead of for a song on ebay. Or if you were a pro and you were using a 35mm camera as a backup & didn't want to lug extra lenses around.
Just wondering here. I don't see why this would be a good idea right now.

It SHOULD be 1/500 :eek: And I believe the new 645D with that shutter should cost $1000 ;) and come with an automatic upgrade everytime a new sensor comes out. :D
If you want it, you can pay the extra $$ for that leaf shutter lens. Let me buy my regular lenses (I'll get a couple of them for , and if I REALLY NEED that fast a sync I'll buy one too.

And here I thought it was just that the Pentax K1000 was the only thing I had enough money for in 1978 when I was upgrading from my father's Argus-C :D
If that d**** Pentax company had only changed their lens mount a couple of times like N* or C* I'd have had an excuse to change and buy a REAL camera! And hang out with REAL photographers! Instead I'm stuck here!:p

Edit - OK, I'm sorry I can't let this go, but:

my roomie had a Tak 70-210 zoom, which I paired with a 2x converter... 30 years ago, taken through a window from across a street...

I second all of that. Just got a 55mm f1.8, cost me $50 and I was watching ebay for a couple of months.
Grab that camera fast if you don't already have it. If I hadn't just gotten my lens, I'd be cruising Craigslist & trying to snap it up before you got it! :eek:

Mmmm... I've got the M version of the 100, it's the same optical setup. Gorgeous, wonderful little lens. Sorry I can't justify the money just for the "A" setting, but I recommend to others!

Somebody has WAY too much disposable income!
If you're gonna blow that much money, at least use it to buy something that has a FF digital back, like Canon or Nikon! Don't buy Pentax, no!
People like this, running up the price of Pentax lenses, are making my LBA way too expensive! :p:p:lol:

I did it once. When I shoot with my K1000, I'm always looking to make sure that the little button on the bottom is moving.
But I shot a whole "roll" with a Canon APS film camera - it was my wife's insistence, she didn't like messing with setting ASA, loading film, etc. The problem was that it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that my daughter had on her birthday. I wasn't familiar with the camera, and couldn't understand all the little icons. I'm sure one of them was telling me I was a doofus.
I'd trade almost any roll of film I've ever taken to have had film in that camera on that day.

$15K, $20K, $25K, whatever.
If I were a professional, taking HS graduation pics and weddings, this is a cost of doing business. I can write it off & depreciate it. I think that the top-end espresso machine in my sister's coffeeshop costs a lot more than this. A good studio lighting setup (not single flash!) costs - what? A lot more than a K20D.
This is one place where Pentax has it all over the Canikon monopoly - they've got the experience in MF. And in Japan they can test it out, get their feet wet with MF digital.
I'm excited. I'll probably never get a sniff of one, but I'm excited.

Amen. I've got two K1000's for my girls, who want to learn B&W photography from the old man.
I just started taking pics with a K2 I picked up on ebay for $120. It was a high price for a K2, but I noticed that the picture of the camera showed a 30mm K lens attached to it. :D :D
As for the K2 vs. the K1000 - one of my girls is using my K1000, purchased for $145 in 1978 by a college student who was making $2/hr (me). My photo class I took the next fall just required a "fully manual" camera. For some reason - I don't remember why - I chose Pentax over the other brands. I later saved up and got a f3.5 135mm and a Prinz flash.
The K2 and KX were WAY outside of my price range!

I gave a Sunpak 611 flash on my K100D. I know, it doesn't do TTL, but I started with manual flash, so I'm pretty comfortable with "just" auto. Especially with a lot of prime glass. And the 611 has a remote sensor that sits on the hotshoe, so you can hold the flash for bounce.
On first view, the images looked great. I took a couple of pics of my cats who were intrigued by what I was doing. But what's with the nasty blue lines? (This is a crop of about 1/6 of the picture.) I see them with two different lenses (not that I could think of how a lens could do this). In other photos, they're red. And look different. In different places.
Almost looks to me like high frequency noise/voltage spike/whatever from the flash is working its way into the sensor read. Guess I really do need one of those fancy Wein isolators?

First, I'll believe the square sensor when I see it. I still think it's not likely.
But - I take a lot of my shots at events, with a long telephoto. Tripod or monopod. I have to pick an orientation and then stick with it - if a moment comes up that would be better with vertical orientation, too bad. Even handheld, in the time it takes me to rotate & recompose, the shot's gone. I'd love to have the square format with viewfinder lines showing where the "standard" crops would be.
OTOH, for some people & what they shoot, changing the camera orientation is no big deal. You don't need a square format, especially if it costs more, and you probably think it sounds silly. And for you, it would be.

If I'm not shooting for square format, there's no vignetting (at least, no more than the lens would give on a std. APS-C sensor). It's still putting a 16mm x 23mm rectangle into a 14.2mm radius circle, it's just whether you put the rectangle in horizontally or vertically.
If I'm shooting for square format, the minimum image circle would be 16.7mm radius, as opposed to 14.2mm for rectangular APS-C or 21mm for FF.
Whether a DA lens would "work" for square format depends upon what Pentax's lens design specifications are/were. Do they have an extra mm radius? 3mm? Did they tell their engineers to design for APS-H but really had square in mind (to keep the idea under wraps)? APS-H minimum image circle needs to be 17.2mm. Could this be the source of the APS-H rumors?? Could the lens delays be due to design tweaking for "APS-H" (really square APS-C)?
I dunno. I'm just a guy who's got a bunch of old manual lenses, a K1000 & a K100D, who's had a Pentax camera since 1978 and has worked with optics from time to time. I've got NO special information and really dislike rumors. But this rumor is so good, and so consistent, that it could be. And I'd like to see it. Heck, I'd like to buy it.:cool:

I've been having some great fun over the past year or so perusing the "rumors" section. :p And I suppose that if I had more sense, I wouldn't be making one of my first posts in this section, but this is the first "K3D" rumor I've seen that makes some sense.
Pentax keeps all the DA lenses - this is consistent with the "roadmap". All you need is the detector & some software changes.
The up-front investment by Pentax is low (they don't need to bring out a new line of FF lenses) and are instantly differentiated from Nikon, Canon & Sony. They can bring it out in only one high-end model (like going from CCD to CMOS in the K20D), and if it doesn't sell, well, no real harm done. But the possible benefit is huge.
The rumor is probably BS, but it's possible...
