Thanks to everyone for participating, always interesting to see how different people approach a photograph.

Lidy, Love the light you have imparted to the colour version, some slight weirdness going on in the upper left where the land meets sky but for the overall atmosphere I like this one alot.
The added fogginess in the black and white is also very fitting, plus bonus points for going black and white as its very much where my head was taking this.

Pelto, You have brought out some great detail whilst keeping a bleak feeling to it and the close in crop works very well, bonus points for straightening it too.

Mariwalt, Interesting colour to your version giving it a brighter appearance, whilst I like the way you have cropped the path at the edge of frame (a technique I often use) I feel in this case the house being cut off loses something for the overall image.

Noelcmn, You have given the foreground colours a nice punch and I like the wide crop.

Jmacias, Again really like that close in crop concentrating on the 2 main elements and the portrait framing works surprisingly well too. A nice light airy feeling to this one.

Astonm, The extra blur nicely draws the attention along the path to the walkers and house beyond, I quite like the colour balance here too.

Tas, Really glad you came back to this, cracking vintage and slightly dark and foreboding feel to your version. Nice one.

Strobedumas, Nice black and white rendering and crop with the darker section at the bottom. The haloing is bothering me somewhat though.

JHfwp, You have really emphasised the misty character in your take, very good.

Bertwert, Again black and white is perfect for this image in my mind so glad too see you went that route. A very well balanced take on it, keeping the mist and slightly bleak feeling.

Tuggie76, Wow! That sky changes the character of the image completely, also appreciate the birds up there. You have blended the warmth down to the foreground really well here making it look very convincing. Nice job.

So to pick a winner, I like Lidy's versions as well as the 2 close in crops by jmacias and Pelto, and the slightly etheral mistiness of JHfwp's take. You haven't made picking one easy, but the one that grabs my attention going through the thread the most is the artistic rendition by Tas.

So congratulations to Tas for a superb take on the image, over to you for #338!

Of course thanks again for all the entries, enjoyed looking at them all.

In case anyone want to see my version of this, black and white and grainy all the way.

Deep red light is good for older eyes

As photographers, our eyes are our most important asset, along with our brain. We've heard that looking at blue light can be bad for your eyes and brain. This article explains that looking at certain frequencies of deep red light is actually good for your eyes, especially if you are over 40.
Declining eyesight improved by looking at deep red light -- ScienceDaily

I'm interested to know if it would be possible to create an image file that is just a field of 970nm red. It may not be possible for my monitor to produce it. It's an IPS, but 970nm may be outside of sRGB or even AdobeRGB color space. I used to do a fair amount of color management years ago as part of my job, but I have lost track of the technical websites I used for deep diving into color. Some sites may have been related to Pantone or Munsell.

Anyone care to comment?

Um and aahed about doing this one, I really liked the image but my initial idea was too close to Lidy's version. So I gave up, but then a few days later decided to take on the challenge of creating a unique version of this image. Thank you to the host for providing an excellent image to work with.

As my original concept was too close to another version already created I decided to go with a more 'artistic' rendition created by working with the light and textures options I had to work with. PP was undertaken in On1 Photo Raw 2020.

No problem. Also, don't forget to the the flash brackets. They will go on top of the light stands (mine screw in), and have a mount for the flash, as well as a hole with a tightening mechanism to hold the umbrella.

The softboxes I linked above are essentially very big umbrellas with cutouts for the stands and diffusion cloth that attaches to the front via velcro.

There are a lot of lighting kits that might save you few bucks as well on Amazon.

I have a Kodak (remember them, they used to be big in photography) gray card that I bought back in the eighties. It hasn't seen a lot of use and is still in the plastic envelope that it came in. I now find myself wondering how much it has faded over the years and how accurate that 18% gray still is. :hmm:

Lovely countryside and great picture! Not the easiest one to work on, but that makes it even better and more interesting. I've tried to bring the sun out amyway. ;) Give it a little bit of time and the whole area will be basking in the sunshine! ;)

First attempt in colour, second one in b&w and a bit foggy

Lettuce in black and white? I wasn't sure I could post process it into something I didn't hate.

And one in color... I wish I would have stopped down a bit further, for a more even DOF, but hey, I'm still learning :)

That second one is excellent. Looks like it should be on the cover of Rolling Stone!

I do a fair amount of low-key work, but seldom with flash. The above was done with a dun-colored cardboard background with the sole light being that coming from a ceiling fixture in a hall some distance away. Secondary highlights are reflections from nearby white walls. A single directional "key" source is usually adequate with any fill being provided with a single reflector.

This is a great thread idea. I do like the low key images. Does this one fit - a darkened alley on a rainy day.

The Godox system has the advantage of supporting HSS (High-Speed Sync) for Pentax. It is likely that you'll need it outdoors for application like "model backlit by the sun jumping rope".

The PCB equipment is very good but not ideal for Pentax users due to the lack of Pentax-dedication.
Indoors, where you can control the ambient light, it will be fine, but if you want to take the strobe outside, I'd recommend an HSS-capable Godox strobe (the AD600 PRO is great).

FWIW, in my view the Flashpoint R2 Pro MarkII is the best trigger for the Godox system you can buy. It is not more expensive than the other Flashpoint or Godox variants, but has better ergonomics and more features.

When it comes to product photography you are going to have to do a lot of improvisation otherwise known as DIY. A lot of the products they have on sale can get quite expensive such as product photography tables, product kits, lighting kits, background kits etc. I started out with 2 hot lamps, some white and black background paper, some stands and a tripod and that's about it. The list of things you are going to need can easily fill a book, so it's best to go slowly and only get the things you are going to need for a certain project.
